Final Table #181: Matt Affleck, Ari Engel, Asad Goodarzy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we continue our coverage of the 2012 World Series Of Poker from the Rio in Las Vegas, with guests Matt Affleck, Ari Engel, and Asad Goodarzy. Matt explains how staking deals work and how much harder they are to find now, why he likes to play smaller-stakes cash games, and why he dreams all year about playing the single table sit-and-go's at the WSOP. Ari talks about moving to Toronto to keep playing online, but finding the games tougher without Americans able to play. He also discusses a tournament director's controversial decision regarding a hand Ari was involved in, and introduced the concept of "ring equity" at WSOP Circuit Events. Asad reveals what it was like to play in the WSOP's new $3,000 buy-in heads-up no-limit hold'em/pot-limit Omaha event, why he doesn't play tournaments with 9 or 10 players at the table, and the mistakes players make when they get down to short-handed play at the end of tournaments. Note: after this show, we're putting The Final Table Show on hiatus, hoping to bring it back later this year if we find a new sponsor. We appreciate your support, which has helped the show grow over the last three-and-a-half years to record listenership in the last month.  Final Table #180: Phil Collins, Tony Dunst, Shannon Shorr | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we continue our coverage of the 2012 World Series Of Poker from the Rio in Las Vegas, with guests Phil Collins, Tony Dunst, and Shannon Shorr. Phil was one of last year's November Nine, so we started by asking about his strategy of limping pre-flop and often folding to raises, how the near-live ESPN coverage changed his play, and why he'd rather have the players sequestered at the final table of the Main Event so that no outside information affects the game. He also explained why it doesn't matter which day of a re-entry event you play if you're only planning to buy in once, because your results are more dependent on your table draw than anything else. Tony discussed his expanded role with the World Poker Tour, doing the final table live streams in addition to his Raw Deal segments, and his relationship with Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten. He also talked about the other talented poker players he's sharing a house with this summer for the WSOP -- and how important it is to have regular maid service when a bunch of guys are living together. In our conversation, Tony gave us one of the greatest quotes in the history of our show when he explained why he had a problem with the WSOP's rule that players at a final table must verbalize all their actions (check, bet, raise). Shannon has cashed in almost 2 dozen WSOP events and won over $4 million in the last 6 years. He told us about his first summer at the WSOP, his advice for amateurs playing in the smaller buy-in events, how to handle the stress and bad beats of big tournaments, and how the quality of online poker play has changed since Black Friday. He also revealed one of his pet peeves -- players discussing strategy at the table. Also on The Final Table Show...Phil Collins talked about making the 2011 November Nine (7/26/11)Tony Dunst explained why he only plays no-limit hold'em tournaments (7/6/11)Shannon Shorr explained why he went back to college to get a business management degree (5/5/10)

Final Table #179: Maria Ho, Cory Zeidman, Nick Jivkov | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we continue our coverage of the 2012 World Series Of Poker from the Rio in Las Vegas, with one guest who's appeared with us annually and two who just won their first WSOP gold bracelets. Up first is Maria Ho, who last summer won the biggest prize for a woman in WSOP history when she finished 2nd in the $5,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em event. Among the topics we touched on with Maria: the shift in how players treat her at the tables since her success; what it was like to play the iSeriesLive winner-take-all event earlier this year; how she adjusts her strategy for smaller buy-in events; and how she found herself sharing a house this summer with fellow poker pros Vanessa Rousso, Vanessa Selbst, and Liv Boeree. Our second guest is Cory Zeidman, one of the best stud players in the world, who finally picked up his first WSOP bracelet this summer in Event 4, the $1,500 buy-in 7-card stud high/low tournament. He talked about that achievement at a final table that included multiple bracelet winners, what it was like to play against the very talented poker veteran Chris Bjorin, how he got motivation from former NFL star Hollywood Henderson, and the mental strain of playing long hours of tournament poker. Our third guest is Nick Jivkov, who won his first bracelet this summer in the $1,500 buy-in pot-limit hold'em event at the WSOP, cashed in a $1,500 pot-limit Omaha event, and is in the running for Player Of The Year. He explained what it was like to move his short stack to the "table of death" with Phil Ivey, Faraz Jaka, Jonathan Little, Gavin Smith, and other players who between them have 9 WSOP bracelets, 4 WPT titles, over 100 cashes, and over $38 million in tournament earnings -- and that was long before he got to the star-studded final table. We discussed a major difference between pot-limit and no-limit strategy, why it's sometimes better in a tournament to fold even if you think you have the best hand, and why he's being bombarded with media requests from Bulgaria. Listen, then click here to subscribe to these podcasts via iTunes or click here to subscribe via Stitcher (for Android phones and other devices). Also on The Final Table... Maria Ho remembered her first WSOP experience (6/7/11)Maria Ho and Tiffany Michelle talked about their experience on the CBS reality show "The Amazing Race" (9/22/09)Cory Zeidman explained an encounter he had with Phil Hellmuth on "Poker After Dark" and how, contrary to popular belief, he didn't slow-roll Jennifer Harman with a straight flush (10/6/09)

Final Table #178: Brian Rast, David Bach, Matt Glantz | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we continue our coverage of the 2012 World Series Of Poker from the Rio in Las Vegas. With the $50,000 buy-in Poker Players Championship having started on Sunday, we have last year's champion Brian Rast (above left), 2009 champion David Bach (above right), and two-time final tabler Matt Glantz -- three of the best mixed-games players in the world. Brian Rast explains how he decides whether to play a WSOP tournament instead of lucrative cash games (such as high stakes pot-limit Omaha with blinds of $250/500/1000) and gave us an insiders look at what it's like to play in the big games in Macau (where he's been very successful). We also discuss whether it's better to play the first or second day of re-entry events, and why he likes having one in the WSOP. David "Gunslinger" Bach explains why online mixed games are terrible without US players in the mix, how his psychology degree helps him read other players, why he's so quiet at the table, and his thoughts on having fewer $10,000 buy-in "championship" events for some mixed games (stud, stud high/low, pot-limit Omaha high/low). He also runs down the players he chose for his team in Daniel Negreanu's $25,000 buy-in WSOP fantasy league. Matt Glantz talks about the final table of the Poker Players Championship not being televised this year, the mix of games he likes to have in cash games, and what poker players can do to bring more people to live games in casinos. We also ask Matt about the death of the Epic Poker League (he was a member of its Standards and Ethics Committee). Listen, then click here to subscribe to these podcasts via iTunes or click here to subscribe via Stitcher (for Android phones and other devices). Also on The Final Table... Brian Rast explained how he beat Phil Hellmuth heads-up in the 2011 PPC despite having a 7-1 chip deficit, and analyzed a couple of hands that they played (8/31/11);David Bach discussed how TV coverage can have a negative impact on tournament play, plus a famous hand he played against Vanessa Rousso in the 2011 WSOP Main Event (2/21/12);Matt Glantz discussed responsibility in poker -- why poker pros must realize how their actions reflect on the entire industry (1/17/12).

Final Table #177: Dennis Almost Wins A Bracelet | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we continue our coverage of the 2012 World Series Of Poker from the Rio in Las Vegas, with an extended analysis of Dennis winning $372,895 with his second-place finish in the WSOP Seniors Event yesterday. We discussed how the strategy was different for this event, which drew the largest single-day starting field in WSOP history with 4,128 players. Dennis explained why he tried not to play big hands against Hoyt Corkins at the final table, how he pulled off a bluff earlier in the tournament when he knew another player was steaming, and what he thought of Allyn Jaffrey Shulman's technique of either folding or shoving her way to victory.  Final Table #175: WSOP Coverage with Donnie Peters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we're both at the Rio in Las Vegas for the 2012 World Series Of Poker. Donnie Peters, live reporting manager and senior writer at Poker News, joined us to talk about some of the big stories from the WSOP's first week, including: A controversy over forcing players to verbalize their actions at all final tables;Another controversy involving players who illegally re-entered this weekend's $1500 No Limit Hold'em event by buying in twice on the same day instead of playing separate days; The failure of the ChipTic system, which was supposed to help track the stacks of every player; How smaller-than-expected fields and spreading the tournaments out into three rooms has lowered the overall energy level;Andy Bloch and Cory Zeidman winning their first-ever gold bracelets;Mike Sexton cashing in two events that ran simultaneously while he ran between them.We also discussed our short-lived runs in a couple of bracelet events, and then offered strategies from our playing experience in many single-table sit-and-go tournaments that are the best value at the WSOP -- from how to change gears from beginning play to middle play to end play, how to get even more value via last-longer bets, and why and how you should chop the prize money when you get down to two players. Listen, then click here to subscribe to these podcasts via iTunes or click here to subscribe via Stitcher (for Android phones and other devices). Note: over the next few weeks, you'll hear Final Table Show interviews we've recorded with more than a dozen poker pros at the WSOP, including Maria Ho, Matt Glantz, Mike Sexton, David Bach, Shannon Shorr, Brian Rast, Phil Collins, Matt Affleck, and Cory Zeidman. We do The Final Table show every Tuesday 3pm to 4pm CT on 590 KFNS radio.

Final Table #174: WSOP Begins + Ed Miller | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we began our coverage of the 2012 World Series Of Poker, which got underway Sunday at the Rio in Las Vegas. We analyzed 3 key hands Dennis played in the first open event yesterday ($1,500 buy-in no-limit hold'em), discussed why turnout wasn't as big as expected, and explained the new chip-tracking system the WSOP will begin using tomorrow. In our guest segment, we talked with Ed Miller about his new book, "Playing The Player: Moving Beyond ABC Poker To Dominate Opponents." Ed explained how most poker players learn how not to lose, instead of how to win, and how they can change that. He also discussed specific strategies small-stakes players can use to make their game better, why fear is one of the major factors keeping players from winning more, and how to recognize bet-sizing tells in your opponents. Listen, then click here to subscribe to these podcasts via iTunes or click here to subscribe via Stitcher (for Android phones and other devices). We do The Final Table show every Tuesday 3pm to 4pm CT on 590 KFNS radio. Also on The Final Table...  Final Table #173: Owais Ahmed | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, with the World Series Of Poker just days away, Dennis revealed his involvement in the company that will take photos of every player in every event at the Rio and make them immediately available for purchase. Look for their kiosk every day you play there! In our news segment, we discussed why the number of entrants at the WPT Championship is at a five-year low while other live tournaments (like the WSOP Circuit Event in New Orleans this weekend) are drawing bigger fields than ever. We also discussed the Hollywood celebs who chose to settle a lawsuit over their poker winnings rather than go to court, whether an official White House response to an online poker petition will have any affect on the chances of legalizing it federally this year, and why you should add Illinois to the list of states considering online poker legislation. In our guest segment, we talked with Owais Ahmed, a mixed-games specialist who won his first WSOP bracelet last summer in the $2,500 Limit Omaha/Stud 8-Or-Better event, as well as finishing fourth in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship. He explained how he overcame a big chip deficit to beat Michael Mizrachi heads-up to win that bracelet and why he's happy this year's Poker Players Championship won't be televised. We also asked him about playing an All In Or Fold tournament earlier this year at the LA Poker Classic, why he enjoys doing commentary on Live At The Bike webcasts, and why he prefers the small fields that show up for mixed-game tournaments as opposed to the big no-limit hold'em events. Listen, then click here to subscribe to these podcasts via iTunes or click here to subscribe via Stitcher (for Android phones and other devices).

Final Table #172: Allen Kessler | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we discussed some tournament strategy from a hand Paul played (or rather, opted not to play) recently, new rumors about how soon the PokerStars/Full Tilt deal could happen, prop bets on this summer's World Series Of Poker, and whether the WSOP should display Chris Ferguson's banner with the other previous Main Event champions at the Rio. We also answered a listener question about how to handle taxes when you share a big tournament prize with people who backed you. In our guest segment, we talked with Allen Kessler, the poker pro who has been grinding his way through tournaments for several years and cashed in over 150 of them, including 20 times at the WSOP and 11 times on the WPT. He explained how he changes his strategy as the money bubble approaches in each tournament to last longer, why he doesn't play cash games, and how he gets so many free buffets from casinos. We also delved into his expertise on tournament structure, including which tournaments do it right, which ones do it wrong, and which one recently changed it structure to add a level that's named after him. Listen, then click here to subscribe to these podcasts via iTunes or click here to subscribe via Stitcher (for Android phones and other devices). We do The Final Table show every Tuesday 3pm to 4pm CT from the poker room of Harrah's St. Louis on 590 KFNS radio.

Final Table #171: Bernard Lee & Michael Hirschensohn | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we discussed the sale of Harrah's St. Louis to Penn National Gaming. The sale won't be complete until the end of this year, but we tried to answer some questions about why Harrah's is pulling out of the market, what it means for future WSOP Circuit events, and what effect the sale will have on poker players in this area. Next we analyzed some rule changes that were announced today for the World Series Of Poker (which begins in 3 weeks in Las Vegas) including lifting some restrictions on what you can and can't say while you're in a hand and what you can do once you've won it. We also revealed the plans for ESPN's coverage of the WSOP, and how you can use your Total Rewards points to enter WSOP events or earn comps with your buy-ins. Then Bernard Lee joined us to talk about the Direct TV broadcasts celebrating the 5th anniversary of his poker radio show, and offer some advice for anyone who will play their first-ever WSOP tournaments this summer at the Rio in Las Vegas. Finally, Michael Hirschensohn, a friend and business associate of the late Amarillo Slim, joined us to shed more light on what was behind the charges against Slim in 2003 that turned him into a pariah in the poker industry -- including some facts from the case that haven't been revealed before regarding the prosecutor, the woman who was in it for the money, the court-ordered psychiatrist who examined Slim, and comments from his old friend Doyle Brunson.  Final Table #170: Sam Barnhart | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on the Final Table, we talked about Dennis' weekend trip to the Chad Brown Charity Event at Choctaw Casino in Oklahoma and the strategy behind his play on the bubble (at the point where one more player will be eliminated before everyone remaining makes any money). We also discussed the newest developments in the Full Tilt Poker saga, including a report that Laurent Tapie offered to hire all of its parent company's employees in an effort to launch a new poker site later this year. And we discussed a newly posted interview with Howard Lederer, in which he explains why "honesty is the best hustle." In our guest segment, we welcomed Sam Barnhart to the show. Sam had an amazing 2011 -- he entered a super satellite that put him into the WSOP Circuit Main Event at Harrah's Tunica, which he won, earning a spot in the WSOP Circuit National Championship at Caesar's Palace, which he also won. To top it off, he made a deep run in the WSOP Main Event, finishing 17th and bringing his tournament earnings for the year to over $800,000. We asked Sam about his life since then, what he learned from playing all those years in Mississippi, and his advice for anyone who wants to follow in his footsteps (including Main Event rookies like Paul).  Final Table #169: Amarillo Slim | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Amarillo Slim died last night at a hospice in his hometown in Texas at the age of 83. Slim won the World Series Of Poker Main Event in 1972, which got him an invitation to "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and other media outlets, making him the first poker superstar -- for many people, he was the only professional gambler they'd ever seen on television.  He was inducted into the Poker Hall Of Fame in 1992. In his memory, we're releasing this special edition of The Final Table poker radio show, consisting of an interview we did with Slim in the summer of 2009 at the Rio in Las Vegas. The conversation was only supposed to last 10 minutes, but Slim kept telling stories, and we weren't about to stop him. In all, he talked for about 45 minutes before his agent finally told us to wrap it up so he could get to another appointment.  We cut up that discussion and ran it in pieces later that summer on several Final Table radio shows, but this is the first time we've released it in its entirety. Among the topics Slim touched on: his friendship and adventures with Doyle Brunson and Sailor Roberts, as the original road gamblers;how he beat a world ping-pong champion by playing him with unusual paddles;his adventures on the horse track, including beating a race-horse in a foot race;how he won a blindfolded bowling bet.In this interview, Slim was also very candid about the child molestation allegations made against him six years earlier.  He explained what happened that day, why he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, and how the charges made him a pariah to many in the poker world.  Slim hadn't spoken publicly about any of this until earlier that year in a published interview with Nolan Dalla, and this was the first broadcast interview he'd given on the subject. One of Slim's last public appearances was at the WSOP Circuit Event here in St. Louis in April, 2011, where he played in a few tournaments and cash games, including a pot-limit-Omaha game where he sat down next to Paul.  As always, it didn't take much to get him to share some stories, joke around with the other players at our table, and even sign a few autographs.  Both of those occasions are on our minds today as we remember Thomas Austin Preston, Jr...  Final Table #168: Faraz Jaka + Douglas Tirola | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on The Final Table poker radio show, we covered the second week of the World Series Of Poker Circuit stop in St. Louis, which concluded yesterday. We also discussed the breaking news of the Bernard Tapie Group's purchase of Full Tilt Poker falling through, rumors that PokerStars might buy FTP, what that would mean for players still waiting for money they had on that site, and under what circumstances the US Department of Justice would agree to a deal. In our first guest segment, we talked with Douglas Tirola, director of "All In: The Poker Movie," a new documentary that is now available for download from iTunes. He explained how he had to change the entire film after Black Friday, why he still included interviews with Howard Lederer and Chris Ferguson after the Full Tilt scandal broke, and how he included some of the history of the game (watch the trailer for the movie here). In our second guest segment, we welcomed back Faraz Jaka, who has been playing tournaments in Europe for the last couple of months, including the debut iSeriesLive event, where online viewers could bet on the players, the flops, and more. He analyzed a couple of hands of early action and whether the betting element affected play at the table, then explained what it's like to be a traveling poker pro who hasn't been home in a long time. Also on The Final Table... Faraz Jaka joined us at the NBC National Heads-Up Championship (3/5/11)

Final Table #167: WSOPC St. Louis | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today on The Final Table poker radio show, we covered the World Series Of Poker Circuit stop in St. Louis, which began Thursday and continues through this weekend. Nolan Dalla, media director for the WSOP was in town, so he sat down at the feature table in the Harrah's St. Louis poker room with us. We discussed Paul's cashes in 2 of the first 4 events, the record turnouts -- including the largest poker tournament in Missouri history, helped by many players who are "chasing circuit points" -- as well as the tournaments that are still to come between now and the Main Event on Saturday. We also explained how, for just a hundred bucks, you can end up in the $1,000,000 buy-in event at the WSOP this summer. We also took a few minutes to acknowledge the legacy of Amarillo Slim Preston, the poker hall of famer who is on his deathbed in a hospice in Texas. Nolan shared some Slim stories, having spent quite a bit of time with him over the years, and we added our own memories of sitting down with him at the Rio a few years ago. We'll resurrect that interview for a special edition of The Final Table soon. Finally, we discussed the unbelievable result of a hand at last week's Big Game in Europe involving Phil Laak, Andy Moseley, Tony G, Scott Sevier, Alec Torelli, and a considerable amount of sleep deprivation. Listen, then click here to subscribe to these podcasts via iTunes or click here to subscribe via Stitcher (for Android phones and other devices).
