Thought I could give a little help with that. On project-gc.com, it's easy to display a map of all the caches of an area, including the archived and/or disabled ones. Go to Tools / Map compare. Input your name, location, check "none found" and "one found", and add the filter "Show disabled / archived" Other filters are also available to narrow the search down if needed). Then you get a mat of all the caches of that area, showing the archived ones with a red cross on the icon. Below the map is also a complete list of the caches displayed. Hope this answers the question. Thanks for the great podcast and keep on podcasting! Vincent aka Vinceo from Grenoble, France. Hey guys (and Jessie), I was just listening to the most recent show. You talked about how to find archived caches. I did find one potential workaround. It's not perfect but it does work. If you use the map compare feature on project-gc you can select to show archived caches. I suggest limiting the area as it will pull up all caches. The good part is that it clearly shows archived ones marked out with a red X on the map with clickable links to the cache pages. Hope this helps and good show as usual. Jesse/Memfis Mafia Special thanks to BroncoCole and all the others that sent in their suggestions! ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed

GCPC EPISODE 528 – Fun Facts, The History of Geocaching | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:34

Geocaching was conceived shortly after the removal of Selective Availability from the Global Positioning System on May 2, 2000, because the improved accuracy of the system allowed for a small container to be specifically placed and located. The first documented placement of a GPS-located cache took place on May 3, 2000, by Dave Ulmer of Beavercreek, Oregon. The location was posted on the Usenet newsgroup sci.geo.satellite-nav as 45°17.460′N 122°24.800′W. By May 6, 2000, it had been found twice and logged once (by Mike Teague of Vancouver, Washington). According to Dave Ulmer's message, this cache was a black plastic bucket that was partially buried and contained software, videos, books, food, money, and a slingshot. A geocache and plaque called the Original Stash Tribute Plaque now sit at the site. The activity was originally referred to as GPS stash hunt or gpsstashing. This was changed shortly after the original hide when it was suggested in the gpsstash eGroup that "stash" could have negative connotations and the term geocaching was adopted. On the Geocaching.com site you can see caches mapped in a variety of settings: everything, your finds, your DNF's with cache type filters. But, how do you see what you have found in total including archived or disabled caches, and, more importantly, ALL previous caches in an area including archived or disabled ones? I quite often read the description of a cache by a veteran who comments about one or more caches that used to be in a the same spot the current cache is replacing. I have a cache (which Sarah TS has found recently) that has a high percentage of favourite points. Without giving too much away, it has multiple logbooks and the geocacher is required to sign the logbook for the day that they are there (ie if they find the cache on the 9th, then they need to sign the logbook for the 9th, if they find it on the 14th, then they need to sign the logbook for the 14th etc..) From some of the online logs I've seen, finders have commented that it appears that some cachers have just signed the first logbook they have found, not for the date that they are there. Most of me thinks, meh, no big deal. And it's really not a big deal. But then part of me thinks, no, the instructions were pretty clear, they may have found the cache, but they've signed the wrong logbook. Best course of action? Let it go, or is it grounds for deleting their log? Great show, and I watch live when I can. Always appreciate the Southern Hemisphere view of things. Scott, you recently told the story about a police officer pointing a gun at you when you were geocaching in an area known to be frequented by drug dealers. Some web sleuthing revealed that you were on episode five hundred and four of Podcacher. During that show you briefly said that one time several police officers swarmed your car, and another time police asked you to leave the state of Wisconsin. What did you do to stir up such commotion? My own LEO occurred while I was looking for a geocache that was too close to park's a play area for small children. One of the police officers who showed up knew about geocaching, and a nano is cause for concern. I was allowed to put the cache back, but I was told to leave the park. That cache was archived, and I later recalled that incident when I found another cache in a different part of the same park. If you put it out, you are responsible for it! If you can't take care of it, take it down. Who cares how many caches you've hidden if they're nothing but geotrash. I'm much more impressed with quality, not quantity. 2) Planning a geocache route: Cachetur.no! I've been playing and planning with it for several weeks now. Super easy, let's you break down trips in a variety of ways, routes your caches to the most efficient path or drive, and it's FREE! I've worked with Thomas the developer on a couple of issues and enhancements, and as Nic really does a great job with Cachly, so does Thomas with Cachetur. Check it out! 3) Can we somehow balance Sarah better? Each week I struggle with hearing her. I get the volume up so that she comes through clear, and then you guys blast me out of the car! I love her perspective and wish I had a consistent volume for all of you. That's it. Thanks for the show. While not looking forward to the 14-hour nonstop flight, I am looking forward to finding my first cache in a new country that will also be my first cache in Asia and my first find in the eastern hemisphere. One of the side trips we are taking will be to the DMZ (demilitarized zone) between North and South Korea. At the Joint Security Area (see link at https://ramblingwombat.wordpress.com/2017/03/18/the-joint-security-area-meeting-rooms/), there are several buildings that straddle the border. On a tour (military escort required), it is possible to go into one of these buildings, a conference room, and actually walk over to the North Korean side and have your picture taken! (What ever you do, don't walk out that back door by mistake!) Okay, here's the deal. North Korea doesn't have a cache. And I don't have a virtual reward to place, nor do I know anyone who does. But if someone wants to contribute their virtual reward, I will provide all the needed info and coords on one condition: I get to log it. So if you have a virtual reward to contribute to what should prove to be a historic cache, you can message me through geocaching.com. Looking forward to hearing from you. This was the e-mail response...I've deleted the details of the CO and the specific cache. Hi You recently logged a visit on one of our caches. Thanks for visiting You also logged a “needs maintenance” log. This is to let you know we have done the miles and the result. As part of our response, we choose to send this standard email to all authors of “needs maintenance” logs. We do not look for a reply. This email signals the cache is now fixed. We filter all DNF and “wet” logs for checking, a bookmark link is on effected cache page until fixed (we don’t need the extra log).. Your “Found” log is deleted because log not signed. We happily maintain our caches, to date; we have done over 1100 recorded maintenance visits of our own caches. A long trip for you to get here? Probably is for the cache owner too We take the opportunity to suggest you consider do as many other players, being “Johnny on the spot”, and while not a requisite, why not contribute to the game and look at doing a fix. Because we own 1000+ caches, we appreciate all the help we get. I started listening about the same time as Sarah started hosting. A visit to New Zealand is one of my dreams and meeting her is person would be icing on the cake if I ever get a chance to fulfill that dream. I don't get a chance to listen to the live taping because of other obligations I have on Wed. evening, but watching to the YouTube video on Thursday morning is something I look forward to every week. In show 520 there was a lot of discussion about food. I especially enjoyed the part about British cuisine. It brought back lots of memories of the 18 months I spent in Scotland and England. The two foods I really fell in love with and miss are fish and chips, and English tea. What we have here in the U.S. that is supposed to be British fish and chips and tea just isn't the same. Kind of like going to Taco Bell for Mexican food. Unfortunately I somehow missed trying mushy peas. I did however try haggis as I was in Scotland most of the time and it is sold in the same shops that sell fish and chips. Not my favorite, especially after I found out what it is made from. Love the show and especially the informal style. Hope to see you at GeoWoodstock. I'll be there as I live just across the river. Can't miss the first U.S. Giga! So I didn't get a chance to go geocaching on Christmas due to family commitments and having cashed out my area, but I started a new tradition this year playing another location-based game while en route from one destination to another.... Almost equally as fun... Are you ready for it? Wait for it... PokeJew! *Ding ding* Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, and happy holidays to the gcpc crew! I've been watching for a while now and have taken some good info from your series. I see you sometimes take show suggestions so I wanted to drop mine in here. I'm working on putting together my first power trail and I love to get your insights on these, both from the hiding and hunting view point. I know they can be a bit controversial. Some people like them and some don't. I personally find them boring, but I've only tried two. I'm sure there are good ones out there and I want to make sure mine is one of them. I'm calling it "The ABCs of geocaching". Number 1 is A is for... 2 is B is for..., C is for... and so on. Whether you like power trails or not, they are a big part of geocaching and I'm sure lots of people would be interested in what you have to say on the subject. Thanks for your consideration. His actions have become overzealous in the opinions of many of the veteran caches in the Granite State. For instance, if a cache has two DNF's he is contacting the cache owner and requiring maintenance or archive. Many of the new cachers are quick to log a DNF. What if the cache is hard to find? Have you folks encountered similar "clean up" activities directed by Groundspeak? Note: if you want, go onto Facebook to the "Granite State Geocachers" page and read a post from Stan Gove. If you want someone to call into your show to discuss, I'm sure some of these folks would be happy to chat. https://www.facebook.com/granitestatecachers HHH: Can’t find Stan Gove post... ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed
