The Terror Factory | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:09

At the end of last year, Project Censored published their yearly top 25 censored stories list. Well, Number 4 caught our eye pretty fast: “4. FBI Agents Responsible for Majority of Terrorist Plots in the United States The Federal Bureau of Investigation has embarked on an unusual approach to ensure that the United States is secure from future terrorist attacks. The agency has developed a network of nearly 15,000 spies to infiltrate various communities in an attempt to uncover terrorist plots. However, these moles are actually assisting and encouraging people to commit crimes. Many informants receive cash rewards of up to $100,000 per case.” The main Mother Jones article they cited was the work of Trevor Aaronson – whose subsequent book “The Terror Factory” nails the whole story. Longtime listeners know that this has been one of our pet peeves forever – the financial and societal cost of mishandling informants. Back in August of 2010, our “Stage Managing the War on Terror” episode with Stephan Salisbury covered some of the same cases we talk about tonight. So we were only too pleased when Trevor agreed to have a talk with us about the subject. About the guest: Trevor Aaronson is author of The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI’s Manufactured War on Terrorism (Ig Publishing, January 2013). He is also co-director of the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting and a senior fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University. Aaronson was a 2010-11 fellow at the Investigative Reporting Program at the University of California, Berkeley, where he produced an award-winning project about FBI counterterrorism operations for Mother Jones. Previously, Aaronson was an investigative reporter and editor for The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, where his stories ranged from local government investigations to reporting in Asia, Africa and South America. He was also formerly a staff writer for Miami New Times and New Times Broward-Palm Beach. A two-time finalist for the Livingston Awards for journalists under the age of 35, Aaronson has won more than two dozen national and regional awards, including the Molly Prize, the international Data Journalism Award and the John Jay College/Harry Frank Guggenheim Excellence in Criminal Justice Reporting Award. Closing music: “Man Walking” from Mark’s New Eye album. Below: A superinformant at work.

 SUBVERSIVES | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:57:12

The FBI’s War on Student Radicals, and Reagan’s Rise to Power “In 1977, The Daily Californian, Berkeley’s student paper, filed a Freedom of Information Act request for documents bearing on FBI surveillance in Berkeley during the 60’s and early 70’s. In 1981, Seth Rosenfeld, then a Daily Cal reporter, started reading those files that the FBI turned over. He published some initial reports. Later that year, having observed how many files were missing or blacked out (“I wondered whether the bureau was America’s biggest consumer of Magic Markers,” he writes), he filed an additional request for “any and all” records on former UC President Clark Kerr, former Free Speech Movement leader Mario Savio, and more than a hundred other individuals, organizations, and events. Five lawsuits, many more Magic Markers, and 30 years later, he had succeeded in retrieving more than 300,000 pages of records, a federal judge having ruled that the FBI had no legitimate law enforcement purpose in keeping them secret.” -Todd Gitlin, FDL Book Salon Tonight, Mike and Mark speak with Seth Rosenfeld, who spent 30 years researching and writing this groundbreaking book. Subversives traces the FBI’s secret involvement with three iconic figures at Berkeley during the 1960s: the ambitious neophyte politician Ronald Reagan, the fierce but fragile radical Mario Savio, and the liberal university president Clark Kerr. Through these converging narratives, the award-winning investigative reporter Seth Rosenfeld tells a dramatic and disturbing story of FBI surveillance, illegal break-ins, infiltration, planted news stories, poison-pen letters, and secret detention lists. He reveals how the FBI’s covert operations—led by Reagan’s friend J. Edgar Hoover—helped ignite an era of protest, undermine the Democrats, and benefit Reagan personally and politically. At the same time, he vividly evokes the life of Berkeley in the early sixties—and shows how the university community, a site of the forward-looking idealism of the period, became a battleground in an epic struggle between the government and free citizens. Part history, part biography, and part police procedural, Subversives reads like a true-crime mystery as it provides a fresh look at the legacy of the sixties, sheds new light on one of America’s most popular presidents, and tells a cautionary tale about the dangers of secrecy and unchecked power. About the guest: Seth Rosenfeld is a freelance journalist based in San Francisco. He was an investigative reporter for the San Francisco Examiner and San Francisco Chronicle and has won the George Polk Award and other journalism honors.

The God Problem: How A Godless Cosmos Creates | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:59:21

Those of you who have listened to the EWRS for any length of time already know how mind-expanding Howard Bloom is.  Mike and Mark have had to buy new hats at least twice now! In all seriousness… we love having Howard on because A: he is incredibly thought-provoking, and B: because he’s Howard, and we love him. Tonight, we talk about Howard’s latest project – The God Problem – how a Godless Cosmos Creates. There’s a secret hidden in a mathematical nugget called Peano’s Axioms.  Is Peano’s mystery the key to the cosmos? The God Problem tackles the puzzle of how a godless cosmos creates; of how a universe without a bearded and bathrobed god in the sky pulls off acts of genesis. And it pursues the riddles behind five mildly flabbergasting heresies: a does not equal a one plus one does not equal two entropy is wrong randomness is not as random as you think and information theory is way off base. And this is just a start.  So join us for another rollicking conversation. Howard’s Kickstarter campaign is here. About the guest: Howard Bloom, a Visiting Scholar at New York University, is founder of the International Paleopsychology Project, executive editor of the New Paradigm book series, a founding board member of the Epic of Evolution Society, and a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the National Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Society, the Human Behavior and Evolution Society, The International Society of Human Ethology, and the Academy of Political Science. He has been featured in every edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering since the publication’s inception. Bloom has taken an unusual approach to the study of mass moods and cultural convolutions. He started out normally enough, building his first Boolean algebra machine at the age of twelve, becoming a dedicated microscopist that same year, codesigning a computer which won a Westinghouse Science Award before he left grade school, and being granted a private brainstorming session with the head of the Graduate Physics Department of The State University of New York, Buffalo, at the age of thirteen. By sixteen he was a lab assistant at the world’s largest cancer research center, the Roswell Park Memorial Research Cancer Institute, where he helped plumb the mysteries of the immune system. And before his freshman year of college he designed and executed research in Skinnerian programmed learning at Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Education. Then came an act of academic heresy. After graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from New York University, Bloom turned down four graduate fellowships and embarked on a 20-year-long urban anthropology expedition to penetrate what he calls “society’s myth-making machinery”–the inner sanctums of politics and the media. During his foray into “the dark underbelly of mass emotion” he edited a magazine which won two National Academy of Poets prizes, founded the leading avant-garde art studio on the East Coast, was featured on the cover of Art Direction Magazine, then gave up listening to Beethoven, Bartok, and Mozart to become editor of a rock magazine. Using correlational studies, focus groups, empirical surveys, ethnographic expeditions into suburban teen subcultures, and other scientific techniques, Bloom more than doubled the publication’s sales, and was credited by Rolling Stones’ Chet Flippo with having founded a new genre–the heavy metal magazine. Seeking still further ways to infiltrate modernity’s mass mind, Bloom formed a public relations firm in the music and film industry and won the confidence of those whose territory he’d invaded. The payoff in knowledge proved invaluable. Bloom worked with Michael Jackson, Prince, John Cougar Mellencamp, Kiss, Queen, Bette Midler, Billy Joel, Joan Jett, Diana Ross, Simon & Garfunkel, The Talking Heads, AC/DC, Billy Idol, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run D.M.C., [...]

Cocaine Death Squads and the War On Terror | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:56:31

Regular listeners to our broadcast know – we have repeatedly made the point that the war on drugs doesn’t work – nor has it ever.  Tonight, Mike and Mark speak with Dr. Oliver Villar, co-author of “Cocaine, Death Squads, and the War on Terror: U.S. Imperialism and Class Struggle in Colombia”, who has spent over a decade researching the subject, and has some eye-opening observations on not only why it doesn’t work, but also on why it’s supposed to work that way. About the guest: Dr. Oliver Villar is a lecturer in Politics at Charles Sturt University. For the past decade his research has been devoted to this book. Much of the research is based on his PhD dissertation on the political economy of contemporary Colombia in the context of the cocaine drug trade. He has published broadly on the Inter-American cocaine drug trade, the U.S. War on Drugs and Terror in Colombia, and U.S.-Colombian relations. Oliver was born in Mendoza, Argentina and has lived in Sydney for most of his life. In 2008 he completed his PhD on the political economy of contemporary Colombia in the context of the cocaine drug trade at the then UWS Latin American Research Group (LARG). Whilst completing his PhD, Oliver’s research interests in political economy, Latin America and the global drug trade followed teaching positions in politics at UWS and Macquarie University. His academic interests have involved an engagement with the sizeable Latin American immigrant community in Sydney and Melbourne and international concerns, such as with political and policy concerns over the ‘globalisation’ of crime and terrorism and the underlying causes of the processes involved. At CSU Oliver’s research interests continue to focus on the vast and dynamic reservoir of political economy and the study of class analysis and class relations. This abiding interest extends across economic thought, economic development and the development of social and political relationships between the First World and Third World (in particular between the United States and Latin America) and the impact of neoliberal economic globalisation.

The Trayvon Martin Tragedy & Use Of Deadly Force | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:57:48

There’s no way around it, no matter how you look at the Trayvon Martin case.  Tragically, someone’s son shot and killed someone’s son. There’s tons of media reportage on the story – some just reporting facts, and some blathering on and on just to keep you watching.  But in the cold clear light of day – how will this be judged?  What is the legal justification for use of deadly force?  And, in the end, what will the arguments be for and against a conviction?  And, maybe most importantly – in the end, how will this case finally rest – will it be on the facts?  Tonight, Mike and Mark speak with Dr. Philip Hayden – someone who has made this his life’s work, for a very long time. And we pray for justice. About the guest: Dr. Philip Hayden, Ed.D., is a retired Supervisory Special Agent of the FBI. Dr. Hayden has been a court-certified expert witness in the areas of Use of Force, Tactics, and Mental Mindset during high risk situations since 1999. The primary focus of Dr. Hayden is to provide investigative consulting and testimony regarding Use of Force and Tactics during high-risk situations. Dr. Hayden created and instituted the Law Enforcement Training for Safety and Survival Program. This program taught law enforcement officers how to conduct arrests of potentially violent subjects in a way that was conducive to their safety as well as the safety of innocent persons and the subject involved. Dr. Hayden has a background and level of expertise unlike anyone else in the Use of Force/Special Tactics expert witness arena. As a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in multiple major metropolitan areas, Dr. Hayden participated in several hundred arrests of violent criminals. Additionally, Dr. Hayden has been certified by the FBI as an instructor in tactical concepts for law enforcement officers; defensive tactics; special weapons and tactics (SWAT); crisis management; firearms; sniper; rappelling; helicopter tactical operations; hostage negotiations; bomb investigations; and pilot-in-command for fixed-winged aircrafts. Dr. Hayden also has been a Supervisory Special Agent for the FBI Academy. For more than 15 years he carried out training and instruction for the Law Enforcement Training for Safety and Survival Sub-Unit as a tactical instructor for new agent training. He has also written dozens of articles and instruction manuals for the FBI, such as the FBI Deadly Force Policy for Federal Violent Crimes Task Forces; How to Conduct High-Risk Arrests; and Safe Apprehension of Dangerous Criminals. In addition to being recognized for his service by the FBI, Dr. Hayden is the recipient of the Purple Heart, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Conspicuous Service Cross, Army Commendation for Valor, Bronze Star for Valor, and the Distinguished Service Cross. He retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Captain, achieving that rank in four years. Early in his writing career, English worked as a freelance journalist in New York City during the day and drove a taxi at night. He often refers to cab driving as a metaphor for what he does as a writer – cruising the streets, interviewing strangers, exploring the unknown, reporting on what he sees and hears from his sojourns in and around the underworld. In 1990, English published his first book, The Westies, an account of the last of the Irish Mob in the infamous Manhattan neighborhood known as “Hell’s Kitchen.” The book was the result of a series of reports English wrote for a weekly Irish American newspaper based in New York… His second book, Born to Kill (1995), was an unprecedented inside account of a violent Vietnamese gang based in New York’s Chinatown, that operated up and down the East Coast. In 2005, English published Paddy Whacked, a sweeping history of the Irish American gangster in New York, Chicago, Boston, New Orleans, and other U.S. cities. Most recently, English published Havana Nocturne (2008), an investigative account of U.S. mobster infiltration of Havana, Cuba, in the years before the Revolution swept Fidel Castro into power. As a journalist, English has written for many magazines and newspapers including: Esquire, Playboy, Irish America, The Village Voice, The Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times… In the mid-1990s, he wrote a three-part series for Playboy entitled “The New Mob” that explored the changing face of organized crime in America. He has published full-length interviews with Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley, actor Bill Murray, director Martin Scorsese, and comedy legend George Carlin, to name a few. In addition, English is a screenwriter and has penned episodes for the television crime dramas “NYPD Blue” and “Homicide,” for which he was awarded the prestigious Humanitas Prize. His new book, THE SAVAGE CITY – Race, Murder, and a Generation on the Edge, is out Now. He lives in New York City. Richard Stratton is the author of the underground cult classic novel, Smack Goddess.
