Episode-1060- Moving as a Prepper and The New Homestead | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:52:01

Today is my first show back at the helm after the big move.  The show was disrupted far more then in anticipated.  As anyone knows moving is a tough thing to do, moving 350 miles with multiple animals in tow along with prepping supplies is even tougher. This time we used a service from ABF to move the majority of our stuff for us, it was really the only way we could get things done.  So from Thursday the 24th until Monday the 28th we didn’t actually possess the majority of our stuff. Even on Monday when the truck showed up unloading took a day and a half and even now we are far from the organized state we left in.  So today I want to talk a bit about how exposed you are during moving and what we might do different next time around, if the hell of having to move ever returns. I also want to tell you about the new homestead.  I have learned a lot about it in the past few days some things are really awesome to discover and others not so much.  We are going to have some challenges with pond building due to rock formations that are not very deep below the soil, but the soil itself is great. I’ll be laying out contour lines soon and having a discussion with Geoff Lawton about the challenges of what turns out to be ocean rock substructures.  Tune in to hear more.  Episode-1059- The Evolving Meaning of a Self Sufficient Lifestyle | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:03

Many people romanticize history.  Oh if only we could have lived in the old days right?  Taking a wagon out to homestead virgin land.  Let me tell you as a student of history it was an amazing time to be alive, it was also a hell of a lot harder then many in the preparedness movement make it out to have been. The reality is modern technology isn’t going away.  That is a great thing, it will change, adapt and face certain challenges due to energy availability but we are not going back to Little House on the Prairie.    Frankly I am okay with that. Modern oppressive government isn’t going away either.  This of course I find unfortunate but it is also reality.  The more I learn the more I realize the majority of Americans are actually for bigger and more intrusive government.  They are simply divided as to how it should be marketed.  I know if you are a fan of liberty this makes little sense but the reality is people have had generations of conditioning and it is the rare person that easily breaks the cycle. Hence to be self sufficient today we need to look at reality not at the romanticism of a history that isn’t going to return.  We also must not fantasize about the utopia promised by a small government society where we can all be left alone.  The only way to obtain this today is to create your own little pocket of as much of it as you can muster. Join Me Today As We Discuss… Why we must n0t turn our backs on technology Why debt freedom must be part of your plan Why where you choose to live is so important Why community must be part of your plan Why we all need to become homesteaders (no matter where we live) Why we need hard skills to go along with soft and technical skills How food storage fits with this plan, disaster or not Why it is time to go on the offensive in some areas and not others Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum TSP Copper – Closed Pending a Major Announcement TSP Gear Shop Survival Gear Bags – (sponsor of the day) Safe Castle Royal – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1057- Zero to Prepared – Fast, Simple and Low Cost- Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:04

Today we cover part two of going from zero to prepared.  If you haven’t listened to part one of this series yet, you really should do so first.  You will notice that title of this episode ends in “low cost” vs. “cheap”. As a marketer there is a rule, if you can eliminate a word do it, but that won’t work here.  Cheap sets the wrong tone for what we will discuss today, we are talking about protecting your life, your property and the lives of those you love, one doesn’t go “cheap” with such things. Today may seem like a basic beginners show but I will bet even the seasoned prepper will gain something and if nothing else will be better able to help others get started.  Prepping doesn’t have to be complex or expensive, what it must be is specific to a set of goals, today we talk about simple ways to make that happen. Join Me Today as We Discuss… Energy Set up a black out kit (basics) Have a secondary means of cooking Consider a generator and battery back up system Have a means of supplemental heat and cooling if possible Remember it is easier to heat a person then a house It is also easier to make ice then cool air Store gas, kerosene,  diesel, etc based on your needs Keep your vehicle tanks full and rotate stored fuel Security Keep your doors locked at all times Practice situational awareness Keep multiple means of defense in your home Be armed and be trained (every member of the house) Know when to go to a “higher threat level” – trust your gut Consider a dog, window films and other enhanced security Take basic self defense training Develop a mindset of meeting violence with superior violence Keep your mouth shut, keep your eyes open and keep your mouth shut Sanitation and Health Water is almost always the biggest problem Have a plan to deal with human waste Have a plan for basic bathing, etc Keep a decent supply of medical supplies Maintain your health on a daily basis Take basic first aid and CPR training Final thoughts Your plan must be your plan There are 52 weeks in a year, one thing a week makes a big impact What you think can never happen has already happened Preparing while times are good is easy and inexpensive Preparing when times are bad is often impossible Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade 13Sill.com Join Our Forum TSP Copper TSP Gear Sawtooth Tactical – (sponsor of the day) Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) Episodes Referenced with Steven Harris as a Guest Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1054- The How, What and Why of Saving Seeds | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:24:26

There is Magic Within Seeds but Saving Them Isn’t Mystical I was talking with Ben Falk of Whole Systems Design yesterday about how more and more small seed companies are now buying at least some seed from companies associated with the ilk of Monsanto. Ben was pretty shocked to hear the Johnny’s Selected Seeds is buying some of their seeds from Semanis, which is owned by Monsanto. There is a lot of fear about GMO contamination both legitimate and ridiculous specifically when the word Monsanto comes up. The best solution is to save your own seeds but we are going to also discuss how to know who you can trust when buying seeds and times where you simply do not have to worry about GMO at all. Join me today to hear about… What is “the safe seed pledge” and why should you care Why we need to be saving seeds in the first place Breeding improvements vs. hybrids vs. GMO (all three are different) Exchanging seeds – a great form of barter The easy plants to save seed from – beans, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes Separation rules – why they exist and not stressing them Staggering pollination times to create effective separation Herbs and unusual plants are often easy to save for and over looked Storing your seeds once they are harvested (is cold storage a good idea) How to clean your seeds, what you need, what you don’t need Growing your own hybrids – hybrids are not always bad How to hand pollinate and ensure purity with squashes and melons, etc Saving root crops like garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes for replanting The rewards of regionally adapted plants Breeding for any and all traits, it really isn’t hard Additional Resources for Today’s Show Members Support Brigade TSP Gear Shop Join Our Forum Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) Back Woods Home Magazine – (sponsor of the day) The History of The Safe Seed Pledge The Form for Companies to Take The Safe Seed Pledge – PDF File Heirloom Seed Swap (Please visit, sign up and list seeds) The International Seed Saving Institute Seed Saving Guide How to Make Sweet Potato Slips Dealing with “Spindly” Seedlings – YouTube Video Building an Inexpensive Grow Light System – YouTube Video Potting Up Seedlings – YouTube Video Watering Seedlings from the Bottom Up – YouTube Video Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1053- Ian McCollum of ForgottenWeapons.com | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:05

The Most Lethal Tricycle of All Time, a Great Example of a Forgotten Weapon. Ian McCollum grew up around his father’s extensive collection of WWII Japanese rifles, and early on developed an appreciation for historically interesting old guns. His gun collecting began in earnest after leaving college, and expanded into an interest in building guns and studying rare and unusual designs in museums and private collections worldwide. Today he shares his passion for old military guns specifically many of them that have been lost to the annals of history on his blog called, ForgottenWeapons.com Ian blogs 6 times a week reviewing guns, historical reference books and posts some incredible old photography as well. He joins us today to discuss surplus firearms and NFA weapons.  We also discuss a bit about current proposed gun legislation and the damage it could do to both historical weapons and the modern gun industry. Join Ian and I Today as we Discuss… The process for legally buying a machine gun “Cleaning a gun after using corrosive surplus ammo Do NFA weapons have a practical use for the modern survivalist When are surplus military guns preferable to new-production civilian guns Should I get an AR or AK? (answer: it doesn’t matter) Some of the great current values in military surplus rifles right now The good and bad of getting a C&R license Why you should never look at cheap surplus weapons and think they will stay that way Why preserving firearms history is so important Why many guns considered to be of “poor quality” are actually of great quality Resources for today’s show Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum 13Skills.com TSP Copper TSP Gear Shop Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) Free State Project – (sponsor of the day) ForgottenWeapons.com Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1052- The Need for Skill Set Development in a Changing World | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:44

Today we announced a new feature to 13skills.com that will improve interaction among members.  This got me thinking that while I often talk about our need to improve skills (specifically hard skills) I have not ever really done a dedicated show specifically going into the actual reasons that such skills are so important. Our modern age has lulled us to sleep but most people that listen to TSP are aware that major changes are not just coming, in many ways they are happening right now, in front of our eyes.  We live in a society where people “call a guy” far more often then fixing things themselves.  We teach our children to avoid phyical work at all costs and are devolving into tablet and phone based society. I personally love technology but consider that we teach a student basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division prior to empowering them with a calculator.  Should we not also teach young drivers to use street signs and read a map before giving them a GPS application? I also have some follow up from yesterday, one issue I seem to have been very wrong about in regard to college and I wish to make it right and something very dangerous in the so called “NRA Members Gun Safety Act” I left out yesterday. Join Me Today as We Discuss… Follow Up From Episode 1051 Listener’s weigh in on the value of community college even with advanced degree pursuit Why the no fly list and terror watch lists do NOT belong in the gun control debate On Today’s Main Topic What a faltering economy or economic collapse means in regard to skills Hard skills vs. soft skills and why we need to emphasize hard skills on some levels How we lost our skills as modern Americans Why we actually feel fulfilled and good about ourselves by building up our skills Why you should focus on the skills that interest you but also challenge you How the loss of skills is directly related to our loss of liberty Why responsibilities must be part of our rights if we are to retain said rights Why real teachers don’t create students but new teachers What have you done with your dash, what will you leave behind  Resources for Today’s Show: Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum TSP Copper The Berkey Guy  – (sponsor of the day) Fortress Defense Consultants  – (sponsor of the day) HR 21 – The Reissued Version of Bill HR 6725 Win Free Tickets to The Free State Project’s Liberty Forum Why Issues Like the “Terror Watch List” and “No Fly List” Should Not be Part of Gun Control – YouTube Video Segment from Today’s TSP Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1049- Surving Superstorm Sandy and The Southern Maryland Beekeeper | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:23

Check Out The Backyard Pioneer We have two interviews for you today, first up Mike Prunty “The Backyard Pioneer” who has a small urban homestead in Long Island New York on his experience with Hurricane Sandy. Mike is a 39 year old suburban husband and father, he works as a Lineman for Verizon and is an avid hunter and do it yourselfer.  He heats with wood and grows a big garden each year. This year he started to get into using a smoker and has his first batch of home brew going right now.  Unfortunately like many in the North East his progress was more then slightly impeded by Super Storm Sandy. Today Mike joins us to discuss Hurricane Sandy and it’s immediate after math for his family and how our basic preps made life easier.  Today we discuss the last minute preps he made and how that made a big difference along with what it was like living on generator power for an extended period. We also talk to mike about how his friends and neighbors reacted to his skills and knowledge during the event.  Then  we discuss what Mike calls the  “indispensable prep” and how it made the biggest difference of all. Finally we finsh up with after now experiencing a big disaster what Mike will do differently and what holes in his preps were exposed. Check out the Southern Maryland Bee Keeper Next we move on to Craig Yardon, “The Southern Maryland Bee Keeper” for a discussion that is the end of our series on keeping bees. Craig discusses the on going threat of CCD, natural bee keeping and the concept of “small cell” bee keeping and how it can drastically improve the bees ability to withstand the virola mights that are currently a huge problem for many keepers. We also discuss the advantages of the warre hive and how it is sort of a cross roads between top bar and conventional bee keeping including the huge advantage of being able to take honey off the top of the hive. We also discuss how to improve the virility of your hive, how to raise bees with no chemicals and how owning bees can drastically improve your results on the homestead beyond honey production.  Episode-1047- The Christmas Special For 2012 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:28:33

Most of today’s show is a rebroadcast of 2008′s Christmas special. Today we pause and take a moment to reflect on Christmas and how it has become the Holiday we celebrate today. Many American’s have no idea just how Christmas became unique here in America, the role it played in bringing our nation together after two wars of independence and the civil war. Christmas is special and a time to pause and reflect. Christmas is indeed a special time of year, today I will cover many aspects of it that may make this Christmas just a bit more special. There is also a full text transcription on of the non commercial portion of today’s show in the show notes below. Tune in today to hear about… Christmas was banned in England at one time and even parts of America Early Americans didn’t really celebrate Christmas, (congress was in session on Dec 25th, 1789) In the early 1800s Christmas was a rowdy holiday spurred by class conflict, turmoil and unemployment In 1819, best-selling author Washington Irving wrote The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon bringing us many “ancient customs”, he simply invented Leading up to the Civil War, Christmas was a “southern holiday” and Thanksgiving a “northern holiday” How Christmas and Thanksgiving together helped to heal a young America Today is a time to pause, reflect and just be, prepping, planning and stress will all wait patiently for you Different ending music for today’s show!
