Episode-2560- Raised Bed Gardening for Dummies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:58

I got an email recently that said… I have not had much success the past few years in growing food. I tried Mel Bartholomew’s square foot gardening last year without luck, problems with bugs, too little or too much water not sure. Here’s my plan: 16′ x 3′ raised bed about a 16″ deep in an area that gets sun from around 9 or 10 am through nightfall. I plan to use part of this space for composing until I get a full bed of nice topsoil. And I’d like to add some PVC irrigation to the bed that I could hook a hose up to. There is good soil on the ground in this spot now so I was thinking I could pile up as much as possible on one side while I work on getting the other side up to snuff. Should I just throw some dirt from under my leaf pile into there as a filler? Should I bury some wood in the bed? Am I too late to get the soil proper before the next growing season? Worms?   I live in zone 7b (Richmond Va) and we have wet springs and the end of our summers can be very dry. So how can you tell when the plants have the proper amount of water?  Thanks, Walker I realize after reading it that it has been a long time since we talked about this subject.  Also that winter is a great time to plan out and often to build raised beds.  I also realized that many people might (note might) be doing raised beds when going with “in ground” or “on ground” beds may be a better option. Join Me Today to Discuss… What are the goal of a garden more over what should they be? Grow plants, today we are looking at food but plants are plants Optimize the growth of what you want vs. what wants to grow in that spot Minimize your work load Give organization to chaos, ie create a pattern you can manage My issues with “square foot gardening” 4×4 beds dry out fast In the end it is just a planting pattern Attempts to oversimplify I still love Mel!  Don’t get me wrong What are the advantages of raised beds Total control of “soil mix” Start weed free and usually disease free Good drainage Clear demarcation point between “lawn” and garden Easy to install irrigation during construction What are the disadvantages of raised beds Cost of construction Cost of fill materials Dries out far more quickly in hot weather/climates Initially requires more labor Semi permanent structures Raised Bed Construction Material Options Timbers Treated Lumber Cinder blocks or or other man made hardscape materials Natural stone, rock, etc. My rules for raised beds 4 feet wide unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise If your ground really sucks (rock etc) go deep Be sure of your location before building them Be sure a raised bed really makes sense, sometimes they are the best option Employ weed blockers Get over your fear or treated lumber or don’t use wood Consider heavy mulch and weed blocking around and in between beds Building soil Use my fertility regiment Mulch, then mulch, then mulch again Cover crop or tarp in winter, or anytime not in use Compost, then compost more, always compost Bed orientation and location If you can’t see it, you won’t take care of it Ideal locations have eastern sun and western shade (subject to your climate) Wind can be your enemy, for many reasons, set up wind blocks Managing your garden Weed early and weed often Keep records of what grows, when things happen, etc. Irrigate on a schedule, automation is best Fertilize on a schedule, this is on you Harvest frequently, you will get more production No matter the technique the soil is the key, we grow soil, soil grows plants Final Thoughts   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com Episode-2384- Building Soil Fertility, Biology and Structure in the Garden My Fertility Program – All the Products I Use Historical P[...]

Episode-2559- Rob Greenfield Reflects on a Year of 100% Living Off the Land | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:38:14

Rob Greenfield is an adventurer, activist, humanitarian, and just a plain old good dude making a difference. He embarks on extreme adventures and activism campaigns to bring attention to important global issues and inspire change. He created The Food Waste Fiasco, cycled across the USA three times on a bamboo bicycle, and in 2015-2016 lived off the grid in a 50 square-foot tiny home in San Diego before auctioning it and raising funds to build 10 tiny houses for people with no homes. He then simplified his life down to just 111 possessions, all of which fit onto his back or his bike. He currently lives in Orlando, Florida in a tiny house he built near zero waste, with 99% repurposed materials for under $1,500. His current project is to grow and forage 100% of the food he eats for an entire year (from 11/11/2018 to 11/11/2019). Let me be clear when I say 100% I mean 100%, to the degree that if he wants salt he needs to evaporate sea water. He is the host of Free Ride on Discovery Channel, the author of Dude Making a Difference, and has spoken at over 130 events in 13 countries. Rob donates 100% of his media income to grassroots nonprofits and has committed to living simply and responsibly for life.  Episode-2558- Life Hacks from the TSP Community | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:06

For a few weeks now I have been asking you guys for “life hacks” and my in box was flooded with them.  Today we go over about 100 of the best of them.  Not all were used but many of them were. These are all little ways to make your life just a little better, save some money, save time, fix something broken, etc.  Most of us have quite of few of these in our lives.  Most are simply picked up over time.  Sometimes we learn them from family or friends but many we simply stumble upon. My hope for today’s show is to make it a “force multiplier” of sorts.  By tying into the community and crowd sourcing these ideas you will learn more life hacks in about an hour then most people learn over a decade.  Since they come from our community unlike a lot of cheesy articles on the internet you can also bet they also work. Some of these you will have heard before, some you will find really amazing and more then a few will make you wonder, why the heck you never thought of them yourself.  Episode-2556- The Thanksgiving Special for 2019 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:24:46

Note – You can get a full transcript of the original portion of this show here. Many families read this and the Christmas show as part of their holidays. Today one day before the great American Holiday we stop and pause to think about what we have to be thankful for. Last year I rerecorded the original portion of this show into much better audio quality, I do hope you enjoy it. If you would like to hear the first version of it as it was recorded in my car you can find the original that was published on Nov. 26, 2008 here. The beauty of this show is I feel it is something you can share with friends and family. The real history of Thanksgiving is actually a lot more interesting and special then many of the myths. Tune in today to hear… Why much of what we learn about Thanksgiving is wrong or at least inaccurate How Thanksgiving was at one time considered a “damn yankee holiday” How Thanksgiving became a way for our nation to heal and reunite How the date of Thanksgiving has often been moved around and why The truth about those big buckles the pilgrims wore and all that black clothing What feasting meant 100 years ago to our prior generation that we have forgotten   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2555- Planning and Skill Development in the Coming Down Time | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:32

A common theme I tend to point out this time of year is that the winter months often come with an abundance of time to do things that simply don’t get done in busier times of the year. As a teen in Pennsylvania I came to fully understand the concept of “cabin fever”.  The spring was full of gardening, trout fishing, chores, etc.  Then summer brought more fishing (bass and catfish), harvesting, berry picking, scouting for hunting season, ground hog hunting.  Fall would come and it was three months of bird hunting, sitting in tree stands, butchering deer and more.  Finally Christmas would come, huge celebration and then……………………well……………..nothing. May be a bit of 2nd season archery which usually meant freezing your ass off or some trap lines to run which meant completely freezing your ass off and then, totally nothing.  Mid January until early April was just boring and it was also effing cold as crap outside.  If not for weekend beer parties I think we would have died of boredom. Now I live in a much milder climate for sure but we still have our downtime in winter.  There is so much we can do with this time.  Today I talk about planning and skill and system development during this coming time of the year. Join Me Today to Discuss… Quote of the Day – “There’s no such thing as downtime for your brain.” ~ Jeffery Kluger First enjoy it, don’t get too crazy with goals, work projects, etc. Some things to consider learning or doing in the coming down time Quality time with seed and plant catalogs This is a great time to set up a reloading operation Inventory your prepper items (pantry, BOBs, vehicle kits, etc.) Set up your plant propagation and seed starting systems Clean, service and upgrade tools, garden tools, etc. Great time of year to get into curing meats Focus on alternative learning for your kids (museums, iMax movies, botanical gardens, etc.) Teach yourself a technical skill (video editing, basic coding, etc.) Build a heating system for a shop or outbuilding Get into brewing, vinting, mead making, making “fuel” Develop your vision for 2020 Take a vacation How to actually make things happen – put it on a schedule, follow the schedule, do the things you don’t want to do first. Final thought – you will do more for you and your family if you turn off the news   Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online TSP Android App TSP iPhone App Blessed – Martina McBride   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2554- Fun Foods for Thanksgiving | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:30

Okay I am going to try to have fun with my two days of work this week and not be too serious about anything.  Today we are going to talk about some fun foods for Thanksgiving.  I’ll say a little bit about turkey but we have done enough of that over the years, so you can reference this past episode for Keith Snow’s Turkey How To for a standard roasted turkey. I want to focus on some side dishes, some additional meat options and yea even some keto/low carb options.  However, let me say Thanksgiving is one day a year.  My plan this year to not over due things is… Step One – eat what ever I want Step Two – send all high carb left overs home with family/friends Step Three – Anything high carb I can’t send away goes to the duck compost pit   It is only one day but you gotta keep it one day, if you have high carb left overs around for a week it is bad juju for those living la vita low carb. Join Me Today to Discuss… Quote of the Day – When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around. ~ Willie Nelson Hey first let me tell you about my reasonably productive weekend Okay first and foremost if you can, consider cooking your turkey on Wednesday Remember roaster ovens are awesome for Thanksgiving For wine remember Jadot Beaujolais-Villages for the meal Some of my not quite conventional sides Twice roasted fingerling potatoes and bacon Bacon wrapped asparagus (or green beans) Squash/Pumpkin Apple Soup Beer bread – stupid simple Andouille sausage and cornbread stuffing A few keto/low carb options For stuffing use a low carb bread, riced cauliflower and sausage of your choice Stuffed mushrooms – stuffed with anything you want For keto gravy just use xanthan gum at about 1/2 tsp to 3 cups liquid instead of flour Loaded Zucchini Skins Keto Chocolate Mug Cake Chia Seed Pudding (endless options) Deserts (non keto) Baked Apples (stupid simple)Look Out Dark Chocolate and Good Red Wine Some Adult Indulgences Home made liquor of your choice Midas Touch Ale Apple pie moonshine 1 750ML Bottle of Everclear (or high proof shine) 2 Cups of Vanilla Vodka – secret (no longer well kept) 2 Cups of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum – secret (no longer well kept) 2 Gallons of Apple Cider 8 Real Cinnamon Sticks (Ceylon) – secret 2 Cups Brown Sugar 2 Cups Honey – Secret until today Tune in For the Procedure Remember it one day, have fun, feast, don’t fight, don’t take argument bait   Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online TSP Android App TSP iPhone App Keith Snow Episode with How to make a Turkey Perfectly Making Keto Chia Seed Puddings Keto Chocolate Mug Cake Old Video on Making Beer Bread – God how Fat was I? Today its Friday so it’s time for the expert council show. To ask a question for a show like this, just send an email to me at jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com with “TSPC Expert” in the subject line. Today on The Survival Podcast, the expert council answers questions on heating, vehicle troubleshooting, laying hens, home child birth, investing, UBI and more. In the body of your email first tell me the council member your question is for. Second ask your question concisely in one to two sentences maximum. Third any and all details after that. This is the formula to give you the best chance of getting on the air. I do what I can to get as many of your questions as possible on the air but can’t always get to all of them. Our council is made of a wide variety of experts in everything from the tactical to the practical and everything in between. To get more information on our Expert Council visit our “Meet the Expert Council Page” to learn more about them and their specific areas of expertise.  Episode-2547- More on Hydroponics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:21

Just so guys there is a method to my madness here, two hydro shows in one week?  Yep so here is the reasoning.  As many of you know I consider myself a polymath and encourage you guys to work at that as well.  Here is a secret to making it happen, temporary obsession. It works like this, a new concept comes into your mind, you find it interesting and initiate an obsession with it.  Not the unhealthy kind that consumes your life, a short term obsession to learn as much as you can, as fast as you can and expand the concept to be as adaptable into other things you already know about as possible.  You digest and implement it as quickly as you can and you don’t care about fucking up unless doing so is dangerous or highly expensive. When you do this you learn more in a few weeks then most will in 2-3 years.  Let me clarify that with you learn more useful and actionable things that most will learn in 2-3 years.  Now the other thing I do is talk about what I am obsessed about on the air.  I do this to get a record of all the crazy shit going on in my head before I obsess about something else. Well ever since the Kratky Show on Tuesday I have been thinking about hydro in new ways.  One of the biggest is for plant propagation.  While I am not sure yet if it will be Kratky (non circulating) or perhaps an air pump driven system, I am pretty sure I am going to go to indoor hydro for most seed starting activity going forward.    While that won’t be my only focus today, it will be the majority of it. I also realize that this time of year is great for indoor growing so I am going to talk about that a bit, including how to make things look “pretty” for those that care about such things.  However most of you do the majority of your growing spring though fall (as do I) and start seeds for planting out in late winter.  For me that is about Valentines day.  So my long term plan is to get as much of this out of my head as I can (may be two more episodes) while playing with the concept.  Then in late winter to run these again as rewinds when everyone is wanting to get stuff going.  I can listen to them myself to remember the ideas I forgot or go back to comments to find out what many of you already know before I bother with mistakes.  In fact this second show was largely inspired by a listeners awesome comment in the last one. Join Me Today to Discuss… Quote of the Day – “Any man who bears the ability of a polymath shall not be interfered by specialty, he needs discipline to manage his behaviors and nurture his creativity.” ~ Shawn Lukas A bit on being a polymath If you are real polymath you learn from yourself You think faster than you should at times You have ADD and that is great, harness it, don’t suppress it, screw societies expectations More on Hydroponics (mostly Kratky) For Seed Starting Simple rack and light system No need to irrigate frequently Heat water with an aquarium heater (very efficient) High density For hydro or in ground systems I am considering aquarium lights here Where and why I may go beyond Kratky For the seed system an air pump would be stupid easy I really want to give “grow towers” a shot in my remolded green house I already have power to the greenhouse and aviary anyway Somethings I have learned since Tuesday If you are going to use solids, mix up a concentrate People do use pure hemp fiber or coco fiber and it does work, there are tons of options There are integrated large net pot lids for 5 gallon buckets Put a dome over starts (duh I already knew this, lol) An EC Meter is a great way to get your nutrients spot on – need audience recommendation here, lots of cheaters on Amazon! Use rainwater to start (duh why didn’t I think of this) Spray paint white containers to block algae Spray lids white or back to wight to reduce heat from solar gain on top Additional Ideas Compress your own plugs Make your own net pots from solo cup[...]
