Episode-2351- Zach Weiss on Creating Resilient and Abundant Homesteads | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Zach Weiss is a protégé of revolutionary Austrian farmer Sepp Holzer, Zach is the first person to earn Holzer Practitioner certification directly from Sepp – through a rigorous two-year apprenticeship working on projects in North America and Europe. Blending a unique combination of systems thinking, empathy and awareness, Zach created Elemental Ecosystems to provide an action-oriented process to improve clients’ relationship with their landscape. In 2018 Elemental Ecosystems  worked on 5 continents, creating water retention landscapes around the world. Zach joins us to discuss creating resilient and abundant homesteads around the world.  Along with the ingredients of a successful ecological homestead. Homestead/farm assessment and purchase, water systems, earthworks, access, biological systems, botanical and animal, spring tapping, natural swimming pools, and aquaculture.  In essence how homesteaders can provide for themselves in modern times.  Episode-95- TSP Rewind – The Christmas Special 2018 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Most of today’s show is a recreation of 2008’s Christmas special. Today we pause and take a moment to reflect on Christmas and how it has become the Holiday we celebrate today. Many American’s have no idea just how Christmas became unique here in America, the role it played in bringing our nation together after two wars of independence and the civil war. Christmas is special and a time to pause and reflect. Christmas is indeed a special time of year, today I will cover many aspects of it that may make this Christmas just a bit more special. There is also a full text transcription on of the non commercial portion of today’s show in the show notes below. Tune in today to hear about… Christmas was banned in England at one time and even parts of America Early Americans didn’t really celebrate Christmas, (congress was in session on Dec 25th, 1789) In the early 1800s Christmas was a rowdy holiday spurred by class conflict, turmoil and unemployment In 1819, best-selling author Washington Irving wrote The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon bringing us many “ancient customs”, he simply invented Leading up to the Civil War, Christmas was a “southern holiday” and Thanksgiving a “northern holiday” How Christmas and Thanksgiving together helped to heal a young America Today is a time to pause, reflect and just be, prepping, planning and stress will all wait patiently for you Different ending music for today’s show! The most beautiful version of Oh Holly Night I have ever heard, just pause, listen and realize what really matters while it plays.   Resources for today’s show… Written Transcript of the Original Christmas Show (right click and save as for best results) Video I Made Using the Song By Martina McBride “O Holy Night” (song from the end of today’s show on Youtube)

Episode-2349- Doc Bones and Nurse Amy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Please Note – the following write up on Doc Bones was written by Doc Bones himself.  Not sure if he was daring me to run it with the show, but if so, don’t dare me to do shit, I likely will do it. Joe Alton is an old so-and-so who thinks he knows what he’s talking about, even while drooling on his shoes in his rickety rocking chair. He somehow has held on to his medical license for decades despite extreme views on medicine, politics, religion, and the quality of various brands of light beer. Occasionally, he puts pen to paper and has put together a 700 page syphilitic rant on survival medicine call the Survival Medicine Handbook: The Essential Guide for When Medical Help is Not on the Way, plus other book that somehow, have made him a NY Time and Amazon bestselling author. Now, Joe Alton MD and his geriatric caregiver, Amy Alton, an advanced registered nurse practitioner, have written a book called “Alton’s Antibiotics and Infectious Disease: The Layman’s Guide to Available Antibiotics in Austere Settings”. The book is all about the infections that will cause deaths in true long-term disaster settings and the antibiotics that would prevent those deaths.  Episode-2348- Self Ownership Over Political Activism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Today I was chatting with Nicole Sauce on facebook and discussing what to do for today’s show.  One thing she suggested was perhaps, “why libertarians often come off as assholes and what they can do to better serve their marketing push“.  It didn’t slip by me that Nicole said libertarians vs. Libertarians. In libertarian circles capital L means the LP, as in the official Libertarian Party.  Like most liberty minded individuals I had my time considering the LP a viable option.  I even ran for Congress in Texas as an LP party member.  That one stint at running taught me how dirty, bought and paid for and tightly controlled all government really is.  All of that for a job that pays 600 dollars a month and for a hotel while you are in Austin? So over time I became more a political atheist, first going from Libertarian to libertarian, then on to voluntarist/anarchist.  That said I am still a libertarian.  I think it was Ian Freeman of Free Talk Live, who I first heard say, “All anarchists are libertarians but not all libertarians are anarchists”. You see libertarianism is grounded really on only two principles. 1.  The NAP or non aggression principle.  The simple version of this is simply don’t hurt people and don’t take their stuff. 2.  The Principle of self ownership.  Simply meaning that you own yourself and no one else should have any claim upon you, your labor, your dreams, your choices, etc. These two principles are actually one in the same.  So why the redundancy.  Well because one tells you how to treat others, the second tells you how to treat yourself.  While the NAP prevents you from harming others, the principle of self ownership removes any and all excuses from your life.  If you believe you own yourself, you are your own responsibility even when others violate the NAP in your life, and they will, daily. The problem with Libertarian Politics is it sounds like beautiful music, right up until you try to play it for someone else.  You quickly find that while the word freedom is elevated to worship status in the religion of US Statism, no one really seems to want it.  Today we examine what all this means and what it means for you. Join Me Today to Discuss… The NAP and Self Ownership and how they work for individuals Libertarian vs. libertarian vs. voluntarist/anarchist My story of running for office and why I ended any fantasies I had about government How you can see the trap of politics in the illegal immigration debate Why Self Ownership is more important to grasp then the NAP The NAP will be violated on you daily, so just accept that Self Ownership is something you control in spite of others actions Self Ownership is about personal responsibility, not what someone else should do Self Ownership drives home that freedom applies to everyone or it isn’t freedom Self Ownership employs the Geoff Lawton Principle of – “if the designer is good, the more restrictions the more eloquent the design” Ways you can practice self ownership Solve any and all problems you can solve outside the State’s systems Build a business and use the 90% of the tax code that tells you how to get out of the 10% Develop micro economies (practice agorism) Use crypto curencies, gold, silver, barter, etc Draft your own contracts, appoint your own arbitrators MYOB – mind your own business Influence others to take positive actions Don’t delude yourself, in many ways we individually are not that important Take care of yourself, reboot, etc. Define your version of success and achieve it Final thoughts   Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Forum – A new little site I started Binance.com Biltong for Breakfast On this Day in 1620 The Mayflower Docks at Plymouth Old Time Christmas – George Strait   Sponsors of the Day West[...]

Episode-2343- Making Sausage and Making Mead as Life Skills | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

As we head into Christmas time I thought another sort of fun show would be in order.  First I was going to just do a show on mead today but then I realized that not everyone imbibes, so I decided to do a two fer, half on making meads and half on making sausage.  While good sausage and meads do pair well, I figured this show would also pair well with last weeks stand alone show on Making the Most of Winter Down Time. I also do consider these two things, life skills.  In that if you can make mead, you can also make wine, cider, beer and likely a ton of other things.  When it comes to sausage making, we are talking about one of the oldest culinary skills known to man.  Every indigenous culture has forms of sausage.  I have even seen for instance Mongolians making sausage on the fly when cooking a whole sheep in a traditional style.  Tune in to hear about that today. Both of these processes remarkably easy but have some mental barriers.  I have found when people get past that barrier a few things occur.  First the creative process opens, would x, y and z make a good sausage, well screw it, let’s find out.  Or would A and B make a good mead, well hell, let’s try a gallon and see. This then leads to a new way of thinking for many.  Would these two meats make a good stew, hell would that sausage I made go good in a stew, well let’s find out.  It is the second half that is really critical for folks, LET’S FIND OUT! Now look there are things that a simple “let’s find out” attitude is not a good idea with.  Such as I wonder if I can get that racoon out of my chimney with my bare hands, yea, bad idea.  Yet I have always been amazed when people propose something that MIGHT work and trying it has almost no serious consequences, but they just sit, wonder and never act on it. Today we seek to correct that in a fun and enjoyable way. Join Me Today as We Discuss… The basic small batch mead making process Choosing honey for your mead How to make meads sweet or dry Aging meads The beauty of a “core recipe” Some Meads I have going or will be making soon Of Course 3FB Apricot Cranberry Orange Coffee with Vanilla Cucumber Mint Goumi Persimmon The basic sausage making process To case or not to case and casing options Why you should really think before you smoke a sausage batch Tips for perfect grinding every time Why even if you hate liver it probably should go in your sausage Source of fat beyond the typical “pork butts” Thoughts on “texture” and how much emulsification to do Collagen vs. natural casings Some of my favorite sausages to make and try Venison Cherry Duck Armanac Turkey Cranberry – Yea seriously Jalapeno Garlic and Meat of Your Choice Simple Venison Black Pepper Jack’s Breakfast Sausage If you say you don’t like sausage you are saying you don’t like food Meats people don’t think of that make good sausage Lamb Mutton Goose Shrimp or Crawfish – no I am not kidding Hearts – Yep what ever you can get What can you come up with, that is the real point.   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group On this Day in 1861 – Western Union completes the first transcontinental telegraph line Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Forum – A new little site I started Binance.com Biltong for Breakfast Find Your TSP Facebook Group for Your State Christmas In Dixie – Alabama   Stuff in Today’s Show My Yeast Combo Hamilton Beech Kettle Mini Racking Cane FerMax Nutrient Carboys I Use for Bottling LEM Five Pound Stuffer Turbo Force Grinder Casings I Use Most of the Time Some of My Personal Sausage Recipes Scott Rae’s Sausage Making Making Masterclass   Sponsors of the Day Butcher Box Harvest Eating   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us[...]

Episode-2338- Making the Most of Winter Downtime | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

A February Day at Nine Mile Farm Okay not everyone has winter downtime but many homesteaders do.  Almost no one raises meat livestock though winter so the pigs, chickens etc. that were raised for meat are done for the year.  While you may tool around in the green house most of the heavy gardening is over and most won’t be starting seeds even indoors until February. The holidays are about to be in full swing so many take or just have days off of work.  The majority of folks who hunt will be wrapping things up for the year in the next week or two.  The deer will be butchered, sausage made, etc. When I lived in PA I will admit I got a bit of “cabin fever” in January though early March.  Now however I see this time of year to be some of my best time spent getting things done.  Sure this has something to due with our relatively mild winters in Texas but more so it is about my current mindset. We do get some butt cold days!  Like in the teens, with freezing rain and 50mph wind gusts cold.  You know what though, it is plenty warm in my shop on those days.  All year long there are things I look at and think, “I need to get to that”.  Once that gets said about something more than twice and it remains undone it goes on my list.  It is amazing how easy that list is to work down in winter time. Join Me Today to Discuss… The changing of seasons and their link to agrarian and horticultural societies The concept of “winter rest” and what I missed when I lived in the tropics STGD (shit to get done) in Winter First enjoy the downtime and the holidays Do an AAR and cost analysis of the past year Spend time with seed catalogs Sit down and map out projects, do take offs, etc. Set up your seed starting system Really enjoy some of your non homestead hobbies Make mead, brew beer, etc. Spend time doing skill set development Get into the content creation business (online business) Make bone broth, can soups, etc. Develop your cooking skills Set up and indoor growing system (fresh herbs) Work on training the dogs Construction projects – coops, chicken tractors, rabbit hutches, etc. Hatch and brood chicks, not it isn’t crazy I will tell you why Craigslist – some of the best deals are right now Real estate couch shopping – same thing on deals Shut off all the noise, enjoy a good drink, listen to good music, and relax Final thoughts   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group On this Day in 2009 Amanda Knox is Convicted of Murder in Italy More on the Amanda Knox Case Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Forum – A new little site I started Forum Post on Cool Seed Catalogs Binance.com Biltong for Breakfast Find Your TSP Facebook Group for Your State Come on Eileen on SongFacts.com Come On Eileen – Dexy’s Midnight Runners   Sponsors of the Day Western Botanicals Ready Made Resources   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
