Episode-2430- The Death of Personal Responsibility | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:05

Before we get deep into today’s topic I am going to go a bit deeper with some planned changes in the show’s format.  Don’t worry TSP isn’t changing per se just some changes in the schedule, format, etc. to keep stuff fresh. Then I want to discuss the subject of personal responsibility in the world today.  I was recently asked by a guest if I really believed the quote buy Permaculturist Geoff Lawton… “All the worlds problems can be solved in a garden.” My response was, absolutely, but you need personal responsibility as well.  The response came back, “Personal responsibility of the gardener or the world.” Well, both but first, the gardener!  This is the key, the rest of the world is not ever going to be personally responsible for shit until the minority that actually see value in such things, shuts up about it and gets on with doing it.  This is one of many reasons that politics is dead to me.  I see the same bullshit from both sides and I ain’t talking the elected clowns at this point, I am talking about the people watching the circus and choosing a group of clowns to root for. The left attacks the right, the right attacks the left, everyone agrees that government sucks and is corrupt but they want more of their kind.  So here is another quote, this one is my own…. “Here is everything wrong with government, along with my plan to make government bigger and more powerful” ~ Every Politician Ever So it is clear that the solutions exist outside of the State and its’ systems.  It is also clear that the solutions are not really of interest to the average person.  So what is the answer?  You and your own back yard, side yard, friends, porch, life, bank account, children, etc.  As always we are back to the “real circles of life”. What are the real circles of life?  There are three, they are… The circle of concern The circle of influence The circle of control   I call them your real circles of life because you will spend every waking moment of your life with your mind and hence you inside them.  The first circle is the weakest, these are all the things you are concerned about but have no real control or influence over.  Like the SJWs crying on YouTube or the assclown circus going on in congress right now, etc.  This also includes anything anyone is doing or saying that takes up your attention but you can’t really influence or control. The second circle is all of the things you are concerned about and can influence but can’t control.  If you are a parent of adult children, this is a perfect example.  I personally feel I have a lot of influence in the life of my son, daughter-in-law and grand kids.  When they want advice I give it, sometimes I see an issue and I give advice unasked.  My son, however; is a grown ass man. It is his family, he makes the call. Likewise some of my neighbors have started to plant trees due to my example some never will, I have influence but no control.  Via this podcast I influence over 200,000 people and those they influence, but I don’t control a damn thing my listeners do or don’t do.  I can tell you guys, my neighbors or my son that you need a household budget but I can’t make you write it up, nor can I make you follow it. The third circle is the most powerful circle.  It is all the things you both care about and control.  If you want a garden and you have a yard, you can damn well plant a garden.  The most important thing about this circle is not just that you can control your actions in it, but your thoughts as well.  Don’t like gardens, then thoughts of gardens are not something you need to concern yourself with.  Got it?  The key here is you control what you think, how you learn, how you act, etc.  And you don’t get to do this for any other human on the planet.  Just you! Some folks you may have more influence with then others.  Such as a spo[...]

Episode-2429- Dr. Jeff Tomberlin on Black Solider Fly Compost Systems | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:13

Dr. Jeffery K. Tomberlin is a Professor & AgriLife Research Fellow in the Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University. He is also the Director of the Forensic & Investigative Sciences Program at Texas A&M University, and the principle investigator of the Forensic Laboratory for Investigative Entomological Sciences (F.L.I.E.S.) Facility at Texas A&M University. Research in the F.L.I.E.S. Facility examines species interactions on ephemeral resources such as vertebrate carrion, decomposing plant material and animal wastes in order to better understand the mechanisms regulating arthropod behavior as related to arrival, colonization and succession patterns. The goals of his program are numerous; however, a major focus of his research is on waste management in confined animal facilities as well as concerns with food waste being placed in landfills. His research efforts for the past 20 years have been developing methods for the production of alternate protein sources for use as livestock, poultry and aquaculture feed from these resources. Predominately, these efforts have been accomplished through his research with the black soldier fly. Since arriving on campus at Texas A&M University in 2007, nine Ph.D. and seventeen M.S. students have completed their degrees under his supervision. Dr. Tomberlin welcomes those that are interested in collaborating or gaining experience in black soldier fly as a sustainable system to produce protein or other areas of his research to visit the F.L.I.E.S. Facility. Dr. Tomberlin has worked with companies throughout the world including, but not limited to Malaysia, China, and Australia. He has also given presentations (e.g., TEDx) on insects as food and feed throughout the world as well (e.g., China, Malaysia, Australia). Because of Dr. Tomberlin’s commitment to protecting the environment while helping others, he, along with a group of close friends, started EVO Conversion Systems, LLC. The mission of EVO is to protect the environment while producing protein with the black soldier fly. Through EVO, individuals are trained to mass produce the black soldier fly as well as partner with other companies that are a part of the EVO Consortium. EVO has partnerships throughout the world and welcomes others interested in learning how to become a collaborator on this exciting path towards sustainable agriculture. Dr. Tomberlin joins us today to discuss The use of black soldier flies to recycle food or animal waste to produce protein as feed for livestock as well as the production of compost: updates on industry and backyard uses. Cory McElroy is the founder of Aquarium Co-op a tropical fish based business specializing in fish, plants and accessories.  Cory has been passionate about business and fish for a long time so he set upon a path to fulfill a dream of owning his own store.  Cory’s brick and mortar store is located just a bit outside of Seattle Washington.  He also markets and sells heavily online and just acquired a warehouse to handle is growing online business. Social media has been a cornerstone in his success, his Youtube Channel has over 300,000 subscribers and contributes heavily to his business both on and off line.  While I am a self described “fish geek” myself and that is how I found Cory it was his video on setting up a business along with his constant dripping of solid business principles in all his content that made me know I needed to get him on the air. While Cory built his business on tropical fresh water fish and plants, this podcast will help anyone figure out how to formulate a plan around their own passion.  Business principles are business principles no matter the industry.  Join us today for a great discussion on building a business and a bit of talk on the pet fish industry as well.  Episode-102- TSP Rewind – Why Blind Patriotism is a Greater Danger than State Oppression | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:28

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-1582- Why Blind Patriotism is a Greater Danger than State Oppression and was originally published on May 27, 2015. The following are the original show notes from that episode… I could simply say as to today’s topic that blind patriotism is a greater danger to liberty than state oppression because the former enables the latter but that would be an over simplification. This is actually a highly complex and I believe a very important subject. I have been struggling with how to explain what I have to say today for a long time. Yesterday I made two posts on facebook that stirred up some shit storms, the first was this in response to the outrage at a shirt with an upside down flag on it. The second post was my overall feelings about the flag itself, where I express disgust at those who damage our flag but I also acknowledge their right to do so if said flag is their property. Post about The Upside Down Flag Shirt Post about the Flag and Freedoms for All   The most concerning thing to me that people said in response to these posts was, “if you don’t like America the way it is, leave”. Really? So should all of our forefathers that didn’t like slavery of left? Should all of our great grandparents that found it wrong that women could not vote have left? Should all of the people who found the 18th Amendment to be insane just have left America? Should the people who worked to pass the Civil Rights Act have just instead left America because they didn’t like the way it was? I am sorry folks, America doesn’t work that way. Love it or leave it is not patriotic, it is the opposite of patriotism, it is simply saying accept the will of the State or shut up or leave. It is also extremely dangerous thinking, today we examine why. Join Me Today to Discuss… If you blame the individual solider you are part of the problem too A story of a Nazi solider that saved my father in laws life My post about the flag shirt and my follow up about the flag itself Be angry with the system, not those who have been fooled by it What it means when you place a symbol above the ideals it is to represent Why our nation should not be at war at all right now Why you can yes support our troops and not support their mission How your government actually views the military you revere Why those who served the longest and gave the most get offended by these things Why we should understand their offense and respect them as people Why American ideals in my view are actually anarchist ideals Why the most patriotic thing you can do is speak against your government when it is wrong The real danger of blind patriotism, and the larger danger of anarchist arrogance   Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online Granddaddy’s Gun Club Biltong for Breakfast TSP Android App TSP iPhone App   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-100- TSP Rewind – Outdoor Cooking, Grilling, Smoking and More | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:25:42

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-1773- Outdoor Cooking, Grilling, Smoking and More and was originally published on April 26, 2016. The following are the original show notes from that episode… This is yet another Tuesday show chosen by an audience poll. It also wraps up Tuesday shows for April. But remember you still have until May 3rd to vote on May’s Tuesday “Just Jack” shows. Today we talk about one of my favorite things, cooking and doing it out doors. If I took a guess I would say I generally cook out doors about 4-5 days a week on average year round. Yes even in the cold of winter! There are weeks in the summer when I cook outside almost every day for weeks on end. Grilled Salted Steak – Just One Thing You’ll Learn About Today! Why? The keys to me are Flavor nothing beats grilling or smoking Recreation I just enjoy it Not heating up the house Space we have a nice but small kitchen   In fact when we lived in Pennsylvania for three years neighbors thought I was a bit wacky standing on a snow covered deck with the weber smoking away. Again it is just my preferred way to cook. Join Me Today to Discuss… Why is this a survival topic You have to eat It is “off grid cooking” It does use many “bushcrafting” techinques The basics involve the techniques Grilling Roasting/baking Slow cooking Smoking (hot, warm, cold) Frying/boiling/using a pot or pan Terms I use, not necessarily the right technical terms High heat Medium heat Indirect heat Low indirect heat Safe space – not for wimpy college kids Thoughts on different tools and what they are good at Charcoal grills Gas grills Side box smokers/grills Electric smokers Outdoor stoves and burners Rocket stoves Fire pit cooking Dutch ovens The Smokenator Making your own “special stuff” Glazes the basics Herbs and seasonings and stuff you should be using Rosemary Thyme Garlic Peprika Onion Powder Whole pepper corns with a grinder Cumin Oregano Dill (weed and seed) Fennel seed Red pepper flakes Chili powder Brown sugar Honey Dry mustard Mustard seeds Parsley Kosher/sea salt Vinegar Oils and Fats Soy sauce Your favorite BBQ sauces Worcestershire sauce Fish sauce Prepared mustard Horseradish sauce Sesame seeds A coffee grinder Aluminum foil Good tongs and a good spatula Some of my favorite things to cook and how to do it Salted Steaks – Thick cuts only Dover Hunter Style Chicken Thy’s Roasted finger potatoes Smoked pork shoulder with the smokenator Grilled mussles/clams/oysters – so simple so don’t make it hard Carrots with sage and butter Sweet potato planks Grilled jicama Fries Bacon wrapped jalapenos Apples stuffed with sausage and sage Grilled avocado – yes really Grilled peaches – for desert apricots are good too so is pineapple Whole skinned catfish or “catfish steaks” Sandbass on the half shell, many fish work for this   Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1773 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com AgriTrue.com GenForward TspAz.com – Support TSP When You Shop on Amazon Vote On TSP Tuesday Shows Smokenator – Choose the right one for you size grill.  Episode-99- TSP Rewind – Designing Small Scale Forest Gardens | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:27:21

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-1120- Designing Small Scale Forest Gardens and was originally published on April 30, 2013. The following are the original show notes from that episode… At the presentation I just did at the Self Reliance Expo there were two main things people had major questions about when it comes to food forestry. The first was “what trees and plants work in Texas” and that really is what will work in most of the US. The second is how does this all apply to a small back yard or smaller piece of land. The Jujube or Chinese Date – A Great Small Tree for Forest Gardens Now the new video Geoff Lawton just released shows what can be done, including with trees in small backyards. This videos leads off with a back yard that is only 640SF. Of course the first thing people ask then is, but what about our climate that is in the sub tropics. Um, did anyone but me notice the main trees in the system where apples? That said I understand, it does often seem that many of the guilds (plant groupings) in Permaculture are geared to the subtropics and tropics. Ironically the first work on Permaculture “Permaculture One” is actually geared almost 100% to temperate climates. Today I am going to try to take this all down in size and simplify the concepts and explain how they really will work anywhere. Join Me Today As We Discuss… Small Land Holding Advantages Can be irrigated Easy to intensively manage Contain their own micro climates (easy to create more) Most work can be done by hand (build and manage) Are the most productive per square foot on the planet Do not attract attention and easy to secure Nitrogen fixers are not as critical (still a good idea) Things that are different from typical food forestry The layers are scaled down The number of support species are reduced There are few “sacrificial plantings” They don’t require swales or chickens but both are welcome Small ponds and barrels are easily fed with roof catchment Special Considerations that Open Your Options Up Shape isn’t critical, do what works Solar aspect is a major concern, but work with it Put in more irrigation then you think you will ever need Consider ponds, please consider ponds Think about power (solar first but grid is better then nothing) You can plant a LOT closer and a LOT more dense then you think If you have animals design in their nutrient flow In a larger space build “glades” and maximize the edges Build structures for your vines they can otherwise dominate a small system Fertilize (organically) a lot early on Mulch and chop and drop like crazy Trees to consider for North America Apple Plumb Peach Filbert/Hazelnut Chinese Chestnut Almond Jujube Persimmon Edible Dogwoods Pears Cherry Paw Paw Medlars Mulberry Figs Bushes and Shrubs to Consider Blueberry Blackberry Raspberry Wolfberry/Goji Berry Elderberry Gooseberry Currants Goumi Autumn Olive Sea Buckthorn Blue Honeysuckle Aronia High Bush Cranberry Ground Covers Strawberry Sweet Potato Wintergreen Salal Emerald Carpet Thyme (trailing) Cranberry Plant Anything Dense Enough and it is Ground Cover Vines Grapes Kiwi Hops Porcelainberry Magnolia Vine Maypop Other Plants to Consider Large Hip Heirloom Roses Chilean or Pineapple Guava Herbs of all types especially Parsley and Basil Flowers of all types Plant annuals directly into the sunny spots in and around this system Bamboos Honestly anything you want   Resources for Today’s Show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online Granddaddy’s Gun Club Biltong for Breakfast TSP Android App TSP iPhone App Raintree Nursery – A source for most of the plants mentioned today The new video by Geoff Lawton on Micro Space Permaculture   Remember to comment, chime in and tell[...]

Episode-98- TSP Rewind – Of Wolves and Liberty | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:34:34

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-1334- Of Wolves and Liberty and was originally published on April 15, 2015. The following are the original show notes from that episode… Recently I have pointed out a lot of things wrong with our nation. From our own government spying on us, to the IRS taking money from the children of dead parent to the crumbling system we call public education. I have also discussed the rigged political system and repeatedly said voting right now won’t fix anything. I have explained how we are lied to, manipulated and controlled. The most depressing thing I have had to tell you though is that at least, and I mean at least 9 out of 10 Americans are asleep, don’t care or think their side of the crime syndicate is the solution. 90% of Americans are either controlled by the system, don’t care about anything anyway or simply feel totally defeated and have accepted their sorry state of affairs. If a Wolf Can Change a River, You Can Change a Nation. A very fair email came in recently and said, “Well if I can’t vote for change, if I can’t wake up the masses and if I can’t trust either side, what the hell can I do? Oh and Jack, please don’t tell me to pant trees and get chickens. For the record I already have, I see the value but clearly that isn’t enough. What happens when they come take my chickens, bull doze my garden and raise my taxes to pay for doing so? What happens when they take away the last of my natural rights? I see the writing on the wall, and sadly I know you are right about the voting issue, so what do we do, what do I do? How do we fight back? Join Me Today As I Discuss… It sounds overly simple but change yourself, it will change others – be the wolf To win a fight first you must understand you are in a fight To defeat your opponent use his own energy against him To stack the deck, build an alliance of others to fight at your side Wars are fought with both arms and information, information can be more powerful Never seek a solution from one who caused the problem Develop skills, knowledge and teach them to others Never compromise your integrity, be true to who you are Never call theft justice, never call captivity freedom and never equate safety to freedom Remember wolves are not solitary they run in packs, build your pack   Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online Granddaddy’s Gun Club Biltong for Breakfast TSP Android App TSP iPhone App How Wolves Changed the River – Awesome Video   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2425- The Lost Art of Developing Life Skills | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:37:48

My wife had some morning talk crap on earlier this week.  Can’t remember what it was but it was two gals sucking down wine in the morning and cackling about stuff.  Anyway they started talking about the concept of “snow plow parenting”.  Okay I will listen, may be if I had some of that wine…….. Well it was a decent segment, they were talking about how young adults 18-27 were no longer developing life skills.  One of the gals talking was a late menial (37) the other a mid GenXr (46 like me).  What they were saying was that snow plowing was when parents did so much for kids they never developed basic skills. How bad was it, well in the age range of 18-27 almost 70% of those surveyed were still relying on parents to set appointments for them, like for the Dr. and Dentist type shit, at fricken 27!  And get this shit, 25% of parents of ADULTS this age, admitted to contacting their employer to do things like “tell them they are having a rough day at work today so try to go easy on them”.  WTF! So I am coming off the schedule today and instead of doing a call in show we are going to talk about life skills.  Unlike many that just like to bitch and shake their heads I am into solutions.  These young adults don’t suck at life because they chose to, they were enabled and taught to.  Today we discuss developing life skills, both in kids and in our own lives where we are lacking. Join Me Today to Discuss… How the hell did we get to this point, it isn’t likely what you think it is Why we need to stop teaching things and start teaching “how to learn” The role the school system plays in all of this 20 Life Skills Everyone Should Learn Young (or eventually) Managing money and basic budgets Dealing with rejection, hardship and loss How to negotiate and buy big ticket items, insurance, etc. Cooking (really well by the way) How to sell, specifically how to sell yourself Critical thinking, research and analysis Computer troubleshooting Self defense and situational awareness Do basic home repairs, use tools, etc. How to read a map, give directions, draw a basic map, etc. How to use Excel How to sew, at least basic stuff, fix a button, darn a sock, etc. The concept of basic preparedness First aid Basic automotive knowledge, change a tire, how an engine works, etc. How to build a network (a real one, not just followers) Social etiquette How to plant (gardens, flowers, herbs, trees, whatever) How to find their passion and purpose along with patience in doing so How to learn something just because you want to and put it into practice Final Thoughts   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Binance.com Biltong for Breakfast Find Your TSP Facebook Group for Your State El Paso – Marty Robbins   Sponsors of the Day Safecastle Royal Knife Kits   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2424- Aaron McKeon on Getting Started with Homeschooling | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:43

Aaron McKeon is a husband, father of two young children, and Survival Podcast listener who several years ago decided to set his family on a course towards resilience, un-dependence, and a more fulfilling lifestyle better aligned with their personal values. As part of that journey, he and his wife decided they wanted to homeschool their children but quickly learned how intimidating executing on that decision could become. Recognizing a gap in the resources available to would-be homeschoolers, Aaron decided to create the online resource he had hoped for from the beginning. He’s taken advantage of his background as a web developer and created an extensive website as a side-hustle while maintaining his current nine-to-five in Corporate America. Aaron joins us today to discuss is the challenge faced by would-be or brand-new home schoolers, from the standpoint of deciding to home school as well as where you start once you make that decision.  Homeschooling is the exact opposite of one-size-fits all and it can be difficult figuring out where to start, who to talk to, what resources to use, and how to deal with legal requirements. Aaron’s website Be.Education is a website created to close the loop from product usage back to newbie home schooler, with usage data being linked to specific philosophical viewpoints and the learning styles of individual children. Because data is linked to the parent and child’s profile, this better informs new home schoolers who fit a similar profile.  Episode-2423- The Design Science of Permaculture – Part Four | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:48

Four weeks ago I realized that we have not really dived deep into the topic of Permaculture I began this current series on Permaculture. So far we have completed part one, part two and part three of this series. If you have not listened to them you may want to before proceeding in the series.  You can find the entire series here. Today we are pulling back a bit from a pure design discipline approach to talk about what I see as the goal for the majority of TSP listeners that want to bring permaculture into their own back yard.  That goal is the creation of a small scale property that provides massive abundance with minimal work. Look we absolutely can build a huge farm based on permaculture.  We can design a 1,000 acre recreational property too, or graze 500 acres holistically with cattle, poultry and pork.  Yet I have surveyed the audience to know that my average listener has .25-5 acres of land, many have even less then .25.  Most work a job and some work a job and a side hustle.  This means time is limited, land is limited, money is limited and options in general are as well. The approach to take is two fold, both I have always done but were made concrete to me by my late friend Toby Hemingway.  The approach is think horticulturally not agriculturally and design your system like a modern hunter gatherer. Join Me Today to Discuss… Agriculture vs. horticulture Hill people vs. city people (flat landers) What is the concept of liberation permaculture How can you design a “hunter gatherer” system in a back yard Understand the real difference between polyculture and monoculture Design paths though your property Use small spaces Let plants tell you where they want to be Compost everything, some stuff in place Garden beds are fine, but grow everywhere Eat what you grow while taking a walk Integrate animals into your systems Design “beautiful chaos” into your property Integrate water features Mulch, mulch and mulch again (the forest floor is a lake) Plant wild things Six Permaculture Principles for this Mindset Nature is abundance Man is part of nature, not separate as we have been taught If you build it, they will come Manage first by the square foot, then by the square yard Remember nature is all around you Grow where you are, leave something behind when you leave Final Thoughts   This continues a multi part series on Permaculture, next time we will discuss, guilds, free form vs. specific design, 6 more design principles and more.
