I chat with two people from the RSDS Association about this disorder including a nurse who’s been living with this disease for quite some time. We’ll also have a segment on pediatric dentistry and what it can mean for nurses who interact with pediatric patients or their parents. We’ll have that and more later in this episode after the news. If you want to get back in touch with me, please drop me an email. You can send those e-mails in to NursingShow@Gmail.com. Also, a special thank you to Physio-Control and the American Heart Association and their excellent CPR resources for a special partnership supporting this episode of the podcast. That’s it. Let’s get into this week’s news items coming right up! — News: Coming up right now is a segment with someone from the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry to share a variety of important ways parents can both recognize potential problems for their children’s oral health and outline the actions they can take to prevent any issues. Check it out. —- Tip Segment: Reflex sympathetic dystrophy, also known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is a chronic neuropathic pain condition that can arise from trauma of any kind. It can be the result of something as minor as a blood draw that initiates a reaction. The condition arises more frequently than many emergency physicians may realize: roughly 3 percent of patients suffering a Colles fracture develop CRPS. Often the traumatic event cannot be remembered, and CRPS has been associated with trauma happening anywhere from a day to a year after the event. Its most consistent feature, however, is how often physicians and other health professionals fail to make the diagnosis on initial presentation. Check out this interview that will teach you more about this rare illness and how to help recognize it in your patients. —– If you have any questions, links, and more reference information is available in the show notes for this episode over nursingshow.com.

Let’s get into this week’s news items coming right up! — Tip Segment: A shocking fat-shaming incident took place on social media between doctors following the Obesity Week conference last month – of all places.  An obesity doc took to twitter to ‘fat shame’ two prestigious obesity researchers, and keynote speakers at the conference. As healthcare professionals, it is incumbent on nurses and others in the healthcare field to understand our own obesity bias both conscious and the more difficult to identify intrinsic biases towards obese people. I have nurse practitioner and obesity specialist, Angie Golden on to talk about it with me. Dr. Angie Golden owns her own practice in Munds Park, Arizona. She received her Doctor in Nursing Practice from Arizona State University in Phoenix, with an emphasis in evidence-based practice and health policy. She has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters and is the author/editor of the “Shaping Policy, Improving Practice” column in The Journal for Nurse Practitioners. Check out my interview with Angie coming up next. —–
