A dramatic increase in the use of stimulants occurred in the 1950s associated with the development of other psychotropic medications, including antipsychotics and antidepressants. Although stimulant medication is commonly used for intellectually normal children with ADHD, stimulant use in children with cognitive deficits has emerged over the last decade as well-designed studies demonstrating efficacy have been published. The side effects of stimulant medication include appetite suppression with possible weight loss, which, when excessive, can decrease height growth. The cardiovascular system is also stimulated, including heart rate and blood pressure. Children on stimulant medication should be seen by their physicians at least every four to six months to monitor height, weight, and cardiovascular parameters. These medications are used to treat patients with asthma. They work by relaxing the smooth muscles that line the airways. This makes the airways open wider and allows air to leave the lungs. These drugs also are used to relieve breathing problems associated with emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and other lung diseases. Some bronchodilators are inhaled, using a nebulizer or an inhalation aerosol. Others are taken as injections or by mouth. Most are available only by prescription, but a few, such as ephedrine, can be bought over the counter. Examples of bronchodilators are albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), epinephrine (Primatene),ipratropium (Atrovent), metaproterenol (Alupent, Metaprel), and terbutaline (Brethine) Some side effects that nurses might take into consideration with the use of bronchodilators include dry and irritation of the throat and dry mouth. It is important to advise the patient to take sips of water, gargling or rinsing the mouth after each dose. The same thing goes with stroke. One way to do it is living a healthy lifestyle through proper diet, exercise. For patients who are highly predisposed to stroke, it is important that they set up attainable goals that will help them modify their lifestyle, make that a habit and make that habit permanent. Proper management of non-modifiable factors for stroke like  will also decrease an individual's chances of having a stroke since the disease will be well under control and prevent it to progressing at a further advanced stage as in a stroke. Overall, educating the public and making them aware of the pathophysiology of stroke, the causes, risk factors and what happens after a stroke will make them more conscious of their family's health practices and their own. This should not be a surprise to anyone when you look at the physiology associated with the body's stress reaction (sympathetic nervous system). However, while you need more blood sugar in your system when preparing to run from a tiger, the evolutionary reason for the response, this doesn't translate when talking about attacks on the brain associated with either ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes. High blood sugar encourages metabolic acidosis and may facilitate broader cell lysis during times of injury. Additionally, alterations in blood chemistry may hinder clotting during hemorrhagic strokes (yet to be studied and reviewed but certainly valid based on understandings about physiology). Signs and symptoms of stroke include sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble with walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination; or sudden severe headache with no known cause. Early management and diagnosis of a stroke is essential to a good prognosis. One must consider the presence of risk factors that could predispose an individual to a stroke event such as chronic hypertension, atrial fibrillation and diabetes. Acute stroke therapies try to stop a stroke while it is happening by quickly dissolving the blood clot causing an ischemic stroke or by stopping the bleeding of a hemorrhagic stroke. Medication or drug therapy used to prevent or treat stroke are antithrombotics (antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants) and thrombolytics. More importantly, they are also the best vectors for the spread of hospital acquired infections. As defined by the CDC, Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are infections caused by a wide variety of common and unusual bacteria, fungi, and viruses during the course of receiving medical care. Examples include sustained reduction in central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) by 70%, simply by ensuring adherence to available guidelines. Reductions have been demonstrated for other HAIs as well, but, much more remains to be done. Wherever patient care is provided, adherence to infection prevention guidelines is needed to ensure that all care is safe care. This includes traditional hospital settings as well as outpatient surgery centers, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, and community clinics. For nurses, the simplest but most effective way of preventing the spread of HAI's is frequent and proper handwashing. Adhering to the routine of washing one's hands every after patient and procedure goes a long way not only for ourselves but also for our patients. However, these substances that are mistaken to be toxic, only cause GI upsets and are not lethal at all. Common household items like petroleum jelly, silica gel, Poinsettia, toothpaste and bleach are just some of them. As nurses, we should know about what's toxic and what's not to be able to educate the public on which items they should be extra careful with, how to handle GI upsets, and also reduce anxiety and panic especially in parents with children who accidentally ingested chemicals that are actually non-toxic. While there are medications out there that aim at weight reduction, there are also surgical procedures that are aimed for long-term weight reduction, however, after the surgery the patient will have to adjust their dietary and lifestyle changes that is warranted to support the desired outcome of the surgery. In surgery, the abdomen is the common site of incision not only for gastrointestinal problems but also for other disorders affecting the other organs within the abdominal cavity. In this episode, nurses and nursing students will know the different nursing considerations and responsibilities in the care of post abdominal surgery patients, possible complications to watch out for and interventions to prevent those complications to arise. They will also be provided a review on the common procedures that involve abdominal surgeries for their own knowledge, for patient education and also for them to know the individual nursing responsibilities post op and pre op specific to the procedure. Basing on these statistics, there is a large population out there that are using medications for mental disorders. One of the more commonly prescribed type of these medications are anti-psychotics. These medications help patients with psychosis lead a more normal and fulfilling life by alleviating such symptoms as hallucinations, both visual and auditory, and paranoid thoughts. However, there are side-effects accompanying these medications. Anti-psychotics are further classified into subtypes, the more recently developed antipsychotic medications have much lesser side effects though the earlier released type is still being used. In a complete blood count, the basic components of the blood which are the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin and hematocrit are examined for their values. An increase or decrease on each of these components are all indicative of a disease or disorder going on with the patient. In this episode, nurses and nursing students will be provided a review on the basic blood components, its normal values, what abnormal values indicate and most importantly, the nursing responsibilities and considerations in a CBC lab order.
