I'm continuing to sort through music submissions and finding new music from some familar faces as well as a few artists new to the Lounge. If you sent me some downtempo tunes but haven't heard back from me yet for whatever reason, email me again at daveslounge@gmail.com, and I'll give 'em another listen.  Bitstream Dream: Gone, But Not Forgotten | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

[audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-20060208-BitstreamDreamSpecial.mp3] To this day, I still don't fully understand why Rom DiPrisco decided to pull all the music he recorded under the band name Bitstream Dream from the web. My guess is his new career as video game soundtrack producer began taking up all of his time, and he didn't want to set expectations for new Bitstream Dream material in the future. After all, if making music is already your full-time job, you might want to do something else to blow off steam. That said, I still wish Rom had left some trace his Bitstream Dream work out there, if for no other reason than for archival purposes. It's one thing to pull the music out of online stores -- that sort of thing usually costs money to keep up -- but to leave almost no trace of the project seems like such a waste. If nothing else, just point the domain to a page saying the project is no longer active and provide a link to an archive of the music. Why try to erase art that was once part of your life? Of course, it's his art, and he can do what he wants with it. (And if nothing else, I just found out he did leave Spiralglide up on eMusic.) That said, Dave's Lounge is my show, and if I want, I can share an old episode full of Bitstream Dream music. Because it's worth sharing. It's been a crazy week here -- parents' anniversary, work-related functions, dumping Verizon DSL for Road Runner, lots of football, etc. -- and I'm still trying to sort through a backlog of music submissions. New music returns next week. Promise.  Dave’s Lounge #168 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

[audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-20090820.mp3] So you might seen me mention on my Twitter feed this week (and in past weeks) that Verizon DSL service has suddenly become quite useless inside my house. While there's one local Verizon repairman who's sympathetic to my cause, my complaints have, for the most part, fallen on deaf ears. I'm sure Verizon would love to offer me FiOS, expect that there's no timetable at all for FiOS rollout here in Durham, North Carolina. I would leave Verizon tomorrow, as I'm out of contract, but my only other option is Time Warner Cable, which is more expensive, and their apparent lack of interest in fixing a malfunctioning junction box behind my house is the reason that I switched to Verizon in the first place. So I have two options for high-speed Internet access at my house, and neither of them really work properly. So what do I do now? Seriously, if anyone out there has suggestions, post a comment here, because I'm starting to miss having an Internet connection I can rely on. [audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-20090813.mp3] Remember a few months back when I did that not-so-chill episode? This week's show is a little like that. It focuses on the more beat-centric side of downtempo, and while it's not quite as over the top as #152, it's still more likely to make your head nod than to bliss you out. And that's not always such a bad thing...  Dave’s Lounge #166: The People’s Playlist | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

[audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-20090806.mp3] This week, I decided to open up the show to the listeners. I put up a call for requests on the Dave's Lounge Facebook page and listeners pick the tunes they wanted to hear. Those tunes ended up forming a pretty solid mix, so I just got out of the way and let the music play. I'll be doing this sort of thing again toward the end of the year, when it's time to put together the 2009 Yearbook episode, so don't forget to make yourself a fan of this show on Facebook between now and then...  Dave’s Lounge #165: The Merge of Equals Special | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

[audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-20090730-MergeOfEqualsSpecial.mp3] I had a sense that Merge of Equals was capable of some great music after hearing their contributions to Cosmic Chill Lounge Vol. 3. What I didn't know, however, was just how many compilations featured Zurich-based producer Flavio Maspoli & Friends before then. No surprise, then, that their debut album, Intoxicating, does not disappoint. This is more than just a collection of tracks taken from compilations. Merge of Equals' music demonstrates a wide variety of emotions -- a sort of versatility you don't usually see in downtempo. I think y'all are really going to like this album. Click here to visit Merge of Equals' web site. Click here to visit Merge of Equals' Myspace page. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #165: Merge of Equals, "Menina" Merge of Equals, "As One" Merge of Equals, "The Impossible Planet" Merge of Equals, "Take You There" Merge of Equals, "Hoshi No Namida" Merge of Equals, "Like an Arrow" Merge of Equals, "Creativity" Background tunes: "Flavor's Place" and "Gravity" Buy "Intoxicating" in DRM-free AAC format from: iTunes. [audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-20090716.mp3] Back from a long break that saw me fly to Austin, Texas, and back, needing two days to recover from that, then come down with some sort of nasty flu bug, and needing three days to recover from that. It's a rare midweek show, but those won't be so rare in the coming weeks. Listen in to find out why. Oh, and check out this week's special guest announcer. He's fantastic.  And Now, Random Ramblings About Michael Jackson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

[audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-RandomMJRamblings.mp3] So I had a lot on my mind over the weekend, much of it tied up in the recent passing of Michael Jackson, and for whatever reason, I just decided to sit down and talk about it. I didn't write any of this down beforehand, so I don't think it came out quite the way I wanted it to, but there was no point in trying to make it better. After all, at some point, perfectionism becomes the enemy of art... Thanks for bearing with me here. I'll put a regular show together next week.  Revisiting East Meets West | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

[audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-20070913.mp3] A couple years ago, I stumbled upon the work of the late Alan Watts, a 20th century writer and speaker who helped to popularize Eastern philosophy with Western audiences. You can hear more of Watts' speeches by subscribing to the Alan Watts Podcast. This encore episode combines the words of Watts with the music of MoShang, who also combines Eastern and Western ideas. MoShang's remix compilation, Asian Variations, was released under a Creative Commons license, and you can get a free copy for yourself at AsianVariations.com. Playlist for Dave's Lounge #93: Viba, "In the Orchard Lies a Secret (MoShang Bonsai Mix)" Gordon's Suitcase, "In Development (MoShang Asian Elaboration Mix)" Big Red Devil, "The Wicked Thoughts of You (MoShang Asian Space Mix)" Toao, "Slush (MoShang Bubble Tea Mix)" Brad Reason, "Cruisin' 'Round Second Life (MoShang Do Re Mix)" André van Rensburg, "You and Me (MoShang Under the Speaker Tree Mix)" Akihiko Matsumoto & Chage, "Missing Pages Soundtrack (MoShang Upstream Downstream Mix)" New music returns next week, when I'm not so sleep deprived and not so annoyed at Giuseppe Rossi. I'll get over that soon. Honest. Enjoy the show!

 Dave’s Lounge #161 (w/ Listener Poll) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

[audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-20090608.mp3] Some of you might have heard about eMusic's recent deal with Sony Music and the price increase that went along with it. I'm a bit torn about this deal myself. On the one hand, even though eMusic's prices have jumped 66%, eMusic subscribers will still pay less per MP3 than they would buying music from iTunes or Amazon, and there's still a great selection of indie music there. On the other hand, that price jump is an obvious concession to an RIAA label -- especially one that once thought releasing CDs filled with malicious rootkit software was "no big deal" -- and it makes eMusic less valuable to existing customers. Plus, eMusic has not handled its critics well. If you're an eMusic customer, I'd like to know your reaction to all this. Do you plan to remain with eMusic in spite of this deal, or are you canceling your subscription? Please answer this poll, and feel free to leave a comment here, too, and let me know if you think Dave's Lounge should continue its marketing relationship with eMusic. Thanks a bunch to Wizzard Media's Rob Walch, host of Today in iPhone and Podcast411, for getting in touch with the iTunes team and making this happen. [audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/daveslounge/DavesLounge-20090518.mp3] Two announcements this week: 1.) Thanks to a whole slew of new music submissions, I have way too many tunes in my queue. So I've decided to expand the show a bit from 6 songs a week to 7. I hope all of you enjoy the extra tune each week. 2.) I'm looking for a volunteer iPhone Developer to help me put together a free iPhone application. Said developer must be familiar with incorporating web content, including RSS and multimedia, into such an app. If you're interested, email me at daveslounge@gmail.com.
