Another Music Discovery Podcast: Hip-Hop and R&B JAMS! | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 0:00:01

Our bi-weekly Music Discovery podcast is finally in full drive. Here’s our most recent edition, an episode featuring New Releases and special picks from our Hip-Hop and R&B genre in the CD Baby catalog. Check out some track-by-track info below. Please enjoy! Maryanne Ito “Feeling You” Waking Up (CD Baby Artist Page) Her album description is right on track: This is such a strong single from a very strong debut album. Maryanne Ito’s vocal performance is beautiful and flawless. The production in this track aint so bad either! YelaWolf “CreekWater” CreekWater (CD Baby Artist Page) Southern rapper Yelawolf’s title track “CreekWater” is more than a pleasure to bring to our Music Discovery Podcast. CreekWater is filled with an older taste in YelaWolf beats and demonstrates an earlier take in his vocal delivery. Overall it showcases an early YelaWolf that has and does rap with drive and finesse. Winfree “Way Beyond” No Negativity (CD Baby Artist Page) “Way Beyond” stands out as a distinct, colorful, falsetto floating R&B track on No Negativity. The beat and the harmonies make the song for me, but clearly Winfree has more to offer than just that. There’s an interesting element of electronic to this jam. I don’t know if I particularly took notice because of the outstanding key tar on the album cover, but it adds a very interesting and stylish element, none-the-less. Johnny Madwreck “Madwreck in the Concept” Long Distance Linguistics (CD Baby Artist Page) Johnny Madwreck’s “Madwreck in the Concept” is a dense, time-travelling, upbeat track that bounces between layers lyrical breaks. The album is a mere 21 tracks, so if this wasn’t enough for you there’s plenty more where that came from. The Other Guys “Memories (Feat. Yu & Substantial)” Seeds of Ambition (CD Baby Artist Page) Producers of Homeboy Sandman (now residing at Stone’s Throw Records) and many other artists, The Other Guys bring you their personal vision at last. This Maryland crew samples for days and flows for weeks. It was hard to pick the best track from their LP because they’re really all very good…not just saying that. Check out the album link to hear more!  All New CD Baby Podcast: Experimental / Avant-Garde: Ethan Rose, Albert Marcoeur, John Cage & Glenn Branca | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 0:00:01

Here’s to another CD Baby Music Discovery podcast! This time we’re focusing on the Experimental, Minimal and Avant-Garde. Don’t miss out on another chance to learn a little about the bowels of the CD Baby catalog, as well as check out a couple of artists you might be surprised to hear that we carry! Ethan Rose “Singing Tower” Spinning Pieces (CD Baby Artist Page) Portland-Chicago based teacher, musician and sound artist Ethan Rose offers an interesting sound-scape in this piece both sonically compelling as well as hypnotic and meditative. Also known for his work scoring for films (Gus Van Sant, etc.) Rose’s work is minimal, patient and rich. Albert Marcoeur “Histoire D’offrir” Armes & Cycles (CD Baby Artist Page) Marcoeur’s Armes & Cycles has been passed around between CD Baby employees for years and continues to be an in-house fave. His compositional approach feels similar to Captain Beefheart in its execution and affinity for Spoken Word, but also leans closer to prog-rock and jazz. John Cage “Four (1989) C” One4, Four, Twenty-Nine (CD Baby Artist Page) It hadn’t dawned on me that we probably had some John Cage in our catalog, but here we go! Hear Christina Fong & Karen Krummel’s chamber orchestra rendition of a John Cage composition written in the late 1980s, when Cage was more than established and revered for his work as teacher, poet and artist. The chords are slow, beautiful and cyclical. Glenn Branca “Lesson No. 3 (Tribute to Steve Reich)” The Ascension: The Sequel (CD Baby Artist Page) Known for his work with 100 live guitars, the no-wave-ish punk outfit Theoretical Girls and mentor to early Sonic Youth creative processes, Glenn Branca is a magically diverse artist and producer. Perhaps his most recognizable trait is his strange approach to the use of electric guitar. This track exemplifies this approach by replacing his own compositional tendencies with the ever phase and cycle based Steve Reich, yet still containing the application of mechanical, guttural guitar sounds.  An All NEW Music Discovery Podcast, Soft and Smooth Edition! | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 0:00:01

We’re back with another CD Baby Music Discovery Podcast! This time we’re featuring freshly released songs of the soft and smooth variety. Somewhere between Soft Rock and New Wave, these Synths, Samples & Harmonies make for fine CD Baby down tempo goodness! Chaos Chaos “Love” Committed to the Crime (CD Baby Artist Page) CD Baby house fave Chaos Chaos put together an impressive polished, pop sound for their new release ‘Committed tot he Crime’. This track opens their new release, setting up and delivering on high expectations for the tracks that follow. Seance Crasher “Piano Pills” Piano Pills (CD Baby Artist Page) Kevin Rafn’s new release ‘Piano Pills’ is a beautifully crafted record. Recorded completely analog on 1/4 inch tape, the production is soft yet sonically diverse. There are no skips in this track list, please be sure to check out others from this release! Work Drugs “Predictable Miracles” Runaways (CD Baby Artist Page) This new Work Drugs release is my favorite piece to this particular podcast puzzle. ‘Predictable Miracles’ is lush, simple, sweet and sexy. It sounds nostalgic in that it calls on early New Wave and disco rhythm and guitar, but in no way gets too literal or cheesy. Thank you for making this Work Drugs Fog Father “RIP” Razzle-Dazzle EP (CD Baby Artist Page) New EP by local Portland arty pop group Fog Father weaves together melodic synth sounds and experimental, yet deliberate pop sounds for what ultimately comes through as a hypnotic, David Lynch-esq, synth ballad frenzy.  Our Bi-Weekly Podcast is back! Check out our new installment with Modern Kin, MC Frontalot, Bethan & Crow Moses! | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 0:00:01

We’re back with another CD Baby Music Discovery Podcast. This round we go from alternative to sampled sweet beats, soft harmonious vocals, to good ol’ rock n’ roll. Bethan “Low Expectations” Low Expectations (CD Baby Artist Page) Bethan’s new track Low Expectations sets a high bar for the upcoming album. Watch out for this group. We’re very excited to have them on board with CD Baby! Crow Moses “Water Mains” Horse Heaven Hills (CD Baby Artist Page) I’m very excited to introduce Crow Moses to our Podcast series. Not only is the bizarre album artwork making my day but this track demonstrates a great sensibility for chords and melody. MC Frontalot “Chisel Down” Question Bedtime (CD Baby Artist Page) MC Frontalot put this track together with Busdriver and John Roderick and the combination is definitely winning. I’m unsure of who the producer is on this track but it sounds like the production is killer on the whole record. Give the link a peep, you won’t regret it. Modern Kin “Abandon” Live @ Banana Stand (CD Baby Artist Page) In case you haven’t noticed, this podcast loves Banana Stand recordings, and for a good reason! This live recording project has captured some of Portland’s best current music at various Portland locations on the d/l. With each one comes a couple of great cuts. Here’s one of our new favorites.  CD Baby Live: A New CD Baby Music Discovery Podcast Feat. CD Baby Artists Live In-House! | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 0:00:01

Here’s the newest installment of the CD Baby Music Discovery Podcast! This set features all CD Baby artists we’ve hosted in our very own Portland, OR headquarters. Don’t miss these awesome renditions by some of our favorite visiting artists! Grant Lee Phillips “Fool’s Gold” Live @ CD Baby (CD Baby Artist Page) Grant Lee Phillips is the man! He came by and shared a few songs with us in an intimate in-office performance. We could only crowd in a few CD Baby employees during this performance, as he literally set-up between desks with our marketing crew! The Lower 48 “Bowtie” Live @ CD Baby (CD Baby Artist Page) The Lower 48 took the time to swing by our office just hours before a show later that day here in Portland, OR. They brought their killer tones and sweet beats to our break room and let us hear a bit from their most recent and upcoming albums. Chris Pureka “Barn Song” Live @ CD Baby (CD Baby Artist Page) Chris Pureka had just recently moved to Portland and we couldn’t think of a better way to spend the afternoon than to hear some Pureka tunes fresh off of the road. Don’t press skip before you hear this track! Mary Gauthier “Learn to Live Alone” Live @ CD Baby (CD Baby Artist Page) Mary Gauthier is truly a CD Baby favorite. I really can’t say enough in this little blurb. She came by to share some of her recent heartbreaking ballads, told us stories and made us laugh. If you haven’t heard her before, please do take a second to check out her discography and fall into the rabbit hole. Ghost to Falco “Born to Win” Live @ CD Baby (CD Baby Artist Page) Ghost to Falco brought their dynamic, atmospheric indie-rock to our office and showed us what they’ve been up to as of late. Though a little jealous of their vintage synth, we couldn’t have had a better day of music. The post CD Baby Live: A New CD Baby Music Discovery Podcast Feat.  We Are Indie! A New Music Discovery Podcast centered on Local Portland music and the CD Baby Employee Showcase! | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 0:00:01

Get ready for a Portland music smorgasbord! This episode features all independant music from CD Baby’s home spot, Portland, OR. In support of an upcoming CD Baby event titled We Are Indie: A CD Baby Employee Showcase, I’m even including a few groups that actually contain CD Baby Employees. Soooo…Click that play button! The Century “Alone Forever” from Oddfellows (Buy at CD Baby) The Century’s CBGB-ish, 70/90s-ish, nitty-gritty rock sound is somehow simultaneously minimal texturally luscious. It also doesn’t hurt at all that the songs feel real and sincere, which is rare amongst rock/pop. I’m so excited to include this one in the podcast. Debaser “Bang Like This” from Peerless (Buy at CD Baby) Meet Debaser, a Sandpeople side project from hip-hop duo Ethic and Sapient. This is an instrumental track from their release, which only gives you a taste of the sweet beats and production they packed into the album… If you like this track wait until you hear the lyrical dynamite oozing from their other tracks. Ethic from Debaser also heads up the Digital Distribution department at CD Baby. Sama Dams “Pretty Ghosts” from No Vengeance (Buy at CD Baby) I love Sama Dams! There I said it! These guys have proven to be an extremely fun and interesting addition to the Portland music scene..and has been picking up a good following for it. Their songs are sparse and rhythmically complicated, while also melodically simple and unique. If this is your first time hearing them, do not let it be the last. Trust me. Goldini Bagwell “Vanglorious” from Secondhand Smoke (X-Ray) (Buy at CD Baby) Here’s Goldini Bagwell, another side-project out of Sandpeople. Goldini’s Secondhand Smoke is packed full of killer singles. Also, his production may be my favorite of all of the songs listed this round. Goldini’s Clark Kent job is here with us at CD Baby in the Inspection department. Seance Crasher “Shams of Tabriz” from Purity Under Pressure (Buy at CD Baby) I only recently got to know Seance Crasher and I’ve got to say that I really love everything I’ve heard from this artist. This is one slick chord changer, melody maker and his sense for arrangements and instrumentation is impressive. He’ll be releasing a new album via CD baby on August 1st titled “Piano Pills”. Keep them eyes peeled! Dragging An Ox Through Water “Wire Haunts” from Panic Sentry (Buy at CD Baby) I’m also pleased to include this track by Dragging An Ox Through Water. This artist has shown great diversity and range in his work and this new release has only widened that range. The album contains a patient and emotional tone, decorated with subtle sonic explorations throughout. Great Wilderness “A Little Love” from A Little Love (Buy at CD Baby) Great Wilderness! Here’s an emotionally sweet single, soaked in soft and shiny harmonies and chords. Great Wilderness has been performing in Portland for sometime, and has starred a couple of CD Baby employees, including Jamie McMullen (former CD Baby Inspector) and Corey Dieckman (current CD Baby Accounting/Business). Volcanic Pinnacles “Today and the Stars” from Volcanic Pinnacles (Buy at CD Baby) When I listen to Volcanic Pinnacles I’m instantly stoked on their textural horn and percussion madness. It’s no secret when you hear this song that this duo is incredibly creative and deeply in it. It’s hard not to appreciate a sound like this. Volcanic Pinnacles features Mark Musselman from CD Baby’s Customer Service Team. The Protons “Battery-Backed Memory” from Out of Phase (Buy at CD Baby) Here’s the Surf-Rock, psychedelic clincher to this Music Discovery episode. While I may be biased, as every couple months or so I get obsessed with Surf-Rock and can’t hear enough of it, I strongly recommend this group. MJ [...]

Mesiko, And And And, Delta Mainline and More! An Ode to Noises, Guitar and Noisy Guitars… | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 0:00:01

Welcome back to another Music Discovery Podcast! After a short break, we’re back with a new collection of songs to share from the last couple of months of Noises, Guitar and Noisy Guitars at CD Baby. Check it out! Mesiko “Mocking Bird” from Mesiko (Buy at CD Baby) NYC/Louisville, KY based Mesiko’s self titled 3 track release probably has as many recorded layers as a normal 8 to 12 track album by a normal band. These songs are a knock out both in terms of their songwriting and their engaging, textural production. Delta Mainline “Stop This Feeling” from Oh! Enlightened (Buy at CD Baby) Somewhere between garage-rock, radio-rock and a washing machine of feedback and electrical noise you will find Delta Mainline. This song stands out to me on the release, taking a more accessible pop-sensibility and plunging into noise. And And And “Things Just Go This Way” from Live From The Banana Stand (Buy at CD Baby) Sludgy, melodic and confessional.. all of the And And And songs on this release have been captured well in this edition of Banana Stand recordings. Don’t let this be the last time you hear And And And. Blackheart Honeymoon “Scars Remain” from Nothing and Everything Else (Buy at CD Baby) Blackheart Honeymoon’s contribution to this podcast further explores the expression of controlled noise and simple melody through weaving quiet country amidst a wide field of atmospheric tones. The album as a whole has a genuinely well written flow. Every song is really well written and recorded; it’s definitely worth listening all of the way through. The Beekeepers “Stoned” from Hot Air (Buy at CD Baby) “Stoned” reigns in the podcast with a simpler, but so so pretty folk-pop sound that will remind you that there’s nothing wrong with singing and good chords. The slide guitar isn’t hurting anything either. The post Mesiko, And And And, Delta Mainline and More! An Ode to Noises, Guitar and Noisy Guitars… appeared first on Discover Music » Podcast Feed.  Throwback Podcast! Featuring Billy Harner, Maureen Gray, The Sapphires and more | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 0:00:01

Oldies, but Goodies! Here is our first part in series of throwback podcasts featuring 50s and 60s music deep from CD Baby’s music library. These episodes will be released periodically amongst the other podcasts. Check out what we have for our first installment: Billy Harner “A Message to My Babe” from Best Of Billy Harner 1962-1976 (Buy at CD Baby) Sounding a little bit soul, a little bit surf and little bit psychadelic rock… Billy Harner’s A Message to My Babe is a gritty and emotional love song that demonstrates Harner’s ability to weave style and songwriting into a unique sound of his own. Nina Pinta “I Can’t Help Myself” from Ninapinta and His Bongos and Congas (Buy at CD Baby) This track comes from a 1966 album featuring percussive instrumental arrangements of hits from the time. The arrangements are classy and tasteful, and bring a latin feel to these classic songs. Maureen Gray “So Young” from The Best of Philly Soul – Vol. 3 (Buy at CD Baby) Maureen Gray! Where do I begin? Maureen Gray’s voice is powerful, commanding, emotional and beautiful. CD Baby is lucky to have a few of her recordings. Don’t let this be the last one you hear! Dino Dupree “A Giant Crab Comes Forth” from Paul Buff Presents… (Buy at CD Baby) Calling on the sound of a B sci-fi movie, this track sounds arranged (or deranged?) for radio. This track brings comedy and mystery to music, as well as a flair for experimental recording. Sonny Fulton & The Will-Ettes “Here She Comes Now” from Best Of Lash Records (Buy at CD Baby) Sounding somewhat Motown and somewhat Big Bopper, this song is fun and danceable. The drummer almost stands out as the lead, showing off a little bit in some of the transitions. The Hearts “Mamma” from Philly Doo Wop (Buy at CD Baby) This track comes from a compilation entitled “Philly Doo Wop”, and it is exactly that. The compilation was put together to present John Madara and Dave White’s skills. All of the songs on this compilation are well produced, well written pop songs of that era. Doug Clark & The Hot Nuts “Hot Nuts Theme 1″ from The Best Of (Buy at CD Baby) Doug Clark & The Hot Nuts started in 1955 and continued on for several years developing their act. Their party-band and comedy edge makes them a great break from some of the more emotional tracks in this podcast. The Sapphires “Your True Love” from Best of The Sapphires (Buy at CD Baby) The Penguins meets The Chantels, but softer and more tender than either of the mentioned groups. The Sapphires have more interesting chord changes and percussion than many of their contemporaries. The post Throwback Podcast!
