The Bitterest Pill: The Dan Klass Monologues show

The Bitterest Pill: The Dan Klass Monologues

Summary: “Actor and comedian Dan Klass whines hilariously about his day-to-day life as a stay-at-home-dad in Los Angeles. His wife works and he’s supposed to be an actor but spends all his time doing laundry instead of going to auditions. Always funny, poignant and well observed, it’s an off-the-cuff improvisation about the joys of being a father and husband. And don’t just listen to one, take two and call us in the morning…it’s a show that grows on you, so ask for a repeat prescription.” - Radio Times Magazine “

Holy cow, it only took 13 years, but finally, my special in-studio guest is… TALLU!? Yes, my daughter, the dancer/actor/singer/poet/filmmaker/student extraordinaire/potty mouth, finally agreed to be on the podcast. It seemed like it got very serious at the time, at least more serious than either of us had anticipated, but, we also had a blast. I’ll have to have her on again and not talk about dance… And, yes, the episode was recorded on September 30th and released on December 4th. Yeah, I know. I’ve been hammering out a podcasting course… Actually, today I completely reimagined Season 2. The new Pill 2.0 will start soon.  WARNING: This episode contains language my daughter shouldn’t use outside the house. Parental discretion is advised.

 #361: Idiopathic Dysphoria | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:51

By now, all those huge changes in our lives that have slowly but surely been creeping up on us (for, what, eighteen years?) have come to pass.  Hudson is off at college, T is going to high school about 40 miles form where we supposedly live, and I feel like I’m gonna die in the frozen food section of an unfamiliar Ralphs. But first, I ask the age-old question: Exactly how much experience do you have to have as a podcast producer to get an interview for a job as a podcast producer? I would assume it’s a number below 13, but apparently not…

(03/25/2009) Our continuing adventures in Hawaii.  This time I’m waxing nostalgic about horseback riding and bb guns.  I grew up in the town that was home to the Crosman BB Gun factory.  At least, I think that’s what that was.  Right near the canal, near the one-lane bridge just outside the village?  Whatever…

#360: This is the End (of Season One) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 46:10

This is the last episode of Season One of The Bitterest Pill. This episode isn’t an episode, so much as an explanation of the college financial aid process.  My apologies. As you may or may not have heard, I will be inducted into the Podcaster Hall of Fame this August.  Hard to believe, I know.  Apparently, there’s a lot to be said for never having the good sense to give up… Season 2 will start after June 1st.  Between now and then, I am gonna make a short film… (it’s that time of year again) MUSIC: Lunar Orbit by Monkey Warhol

I’ve been trying to figure out how to buy a computer on the cheap.  I finally woke up from my Apple-induced hypnotic state to realize I’m paying about double what I could be for a laptop. And, my worst nightmare has come true.  The one thing I’ve been dreading would happen since October happened.  The good news: I wasn’t riddled with anxiety for no reason… I bought the laptop from B&H.   PS: There is no Bitterest Pill #357.  I guess I skipped that one…

Jeff McCann convinced me to try Bullet Proof Coffee.  It’s supposed to give you “mental focus.”  Your results may vary. I also talked about WJPZ FM in Syracuse, and how verticle video is for Soccer Moms.  Sorry, but some things I’ll just never abide by… BUT, pretty sure I’m a complete hypocrite, because I don’t think I have a Subscribe button on my podcast’s website.  Nice. (Here’s the Tommy G. podcast) End of show music this time was “Theme from Penguins on Parade” by Lee Rosevere.

 #356: Of Mice and Yetis | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 45:51

I discuss applying to college, Yetis, getting what you pay for (podcasting education wise), and mouse droppings. Why would a rodent want to eat the wheels off our luggage? I have no idea… I’ll be teaching my college level, credit bearing PODCASTING COURSE at UCLA EXTENSION this Spring Quarter. If you want to learn from someone who knows which part of the microphone to talk into, you can sign up at the UCLA Extension web site. If you wanna learn podcasting for free, you’ll have to either wait for me to finish up the free videos I’m producing right now, or you can just go check out Dave Jackson’s School of Podcasting and Paul Colligan’s site. Any questions, let me know…

 #355: Untitled Compromise/The New Neutral | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:38:14

Well, I’m back (and apparently can’t stop talking).  Mostly, this episode is about what happens when anxiety, procrastination and the Sophomore Slump collide. The results?  A short film not ironically entitled “Untitled Compromise.” Then, I talk about the election.  Don’t worry, it’s pH balanced…I think. httpv://youtu.be/SxttTPs93Jc Wow, now that I see this clip again, there is SO much missing.  Ugg.  What a mess. I still love it though… If you want to know, someday I’ll show you the cowl I made, and explain how I made it.  It is currently not finished.  It’s a mess. But, it’s right on target… Music in this episode was by Nangdo.

PILLBOX: #166: My Name is Dan and I’m a (Diet) Coke Addict | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:06

New episodes coming soon.  This one was originally released in March, 2009… The New York Times is finally right.  I am an addict… This time we discuss iPhone app management woes, NetFlix, David Mamet’s RED BELT, my Diet Coke addition and my being a “prig” (and when I usually spell “prig” it’s with a “ck”), my narcolepsy, being befriended by former classmates (and “lady friends”) on Facebook, the alarm updates, Heather Armstrong, being Super Poked… If you don’t know what Twitter is by now, there’s nothing I can do for you…just go to Twitter and stare at it for a while.  You’ll work it out.  If that doesn’t help, contact my sane alter ego at Jacket Media.  He’s explain it to you slowly and clearly… What is the statute of limitations on being a teenage Lothario?  Or rather, wanting to be… The videos I was working on were written by our friend Joel Thomas, the mastermind of the hysterical video series,  Imaginary High-Maintenance Girlfriend.   BP166_2009_03_04_jiggy.mp3 Open

BONUS: Interview with “The Northbound Saga” creator/producer Seth Anderson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 44:37

Here is my interview with SETH ANDERSON, the creator of The Northstar Saga.  I was going to wait and include this as part of the next episode of The Bitterest Pill, but I’m afraid time is running out on the Northbound Season Two Kickstarter campaign, so I thought I’d send it out now. Seth and I talk about the upcoming feature film, Northstar, and it’s prequel web series, Northbound.  Now, I don’t want to give out any spoilers, but let’s just say I have a vested interest in them getting to the last four or so episodes of Season Two… I have never been so excited about a project in my life, and you can hear it in the interview, as I continuously cut Seth off to talk and talk and talk.  If you want to fully understand what we’re on about, and don’t already know about Northbound (available exclusively via GeekNation.com), you can watch Season One as a supercut and the Character Teaser we talk about at great length, below.  PILLBOX 165: He Folded My Face in Half | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:09

(2/17/09) First I had a twitch in my eye, then he folded my face in half.  I went to school with make-up on and disappointed my son.  Eventually, I shined my shoes and went to Kinkos.  Of course, this isn’t even the half of it… Jerome Benton is an actor, dancer and vocalist, best known for being comic foil to Morris Day as a member of the funk rock band The Time.  He co-starred in Prince vehicles Purple Rain, Under the Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge.  He is currently preparing for a new album and tour with the original members of The Time. You don’t really have the soundtrack to Purple Rain unless you have Ice Cream Castle… *Special note to particularly young white people: The Time is the band that brings the house down at the end of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

 #354: Record the Show | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:32

“Former comedian, failed actor, stay-at-home dad/shut-in” Dan Klass mines the victories and failures of his life in Los Angeles to bring you true stories of the joys of being a parent, and the soul crushing realities of feeling like a neurotic loser in modern America. Did Dan really have to pee into a Snapple bottle parked outside the Brentwood Country Club on his way to lunch with a celebrity priest? Yes. Did Dan screw up his lines on The X-Files over and over and over while having a hypoglycemic melt down? Yes. Did Dan’s family end up on the news after a San Francisco mass murder? Yes… Always funny, often poignant, sometimes heartbreaking, The Bitterest Pill is a work of self revelatory bravery that shouldn’t be missed.
