My guest for Saturday, a Harvard University (1965) and University of Michigan Medical School graduate (1969), Dr. Jonathan V. Wright was also awarded an honorary N.D. by Bastyr University (1993). He is a pioneer in the research and application of effective natural treatments for health problems not requiring surgery. Since 1976 he has accumulated over 80,000 research papers concerning diet, vitamins, minerals, botanicals, and other natural substances (along with Dr. Alan Gaby) from which he has developed treatment protocols. Since 1983, he has taught seminars on his methods to thousands of physicians.  Drs. Wright and Gaby’s “Nutritional Therapy in Medical Practice” seminar remains one of the most complete and intensive natural medicine seminars available to physicians. In the early 1980s, Dr. Wright was the first in these United States to prescribe comprehensive hormone replacement therapy using hormones identical to those found naturally in young humans (rather than hormones from pregnant horses and/or synthesized in factories). This therapy (Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy or “BHRT”) is now used nationwide by millions. Recognized as the original developer and most experienced practitioner of BHRT, Dr. Wright often lectures on maximizing efficacy and safety in bio-identical hormone use. Other accomplishments include originating successful natural treatment for elimination of childhood asthma, developing natural treatment to stop vision loss and/or improve vision in the majority of individuals with “dry” macular degeneration, pioneering the use of aldosterone to reverse age-related hearing loss, discovering the effects of  iodine on estrogen metabolism and cobalt on steroid detoxification, and popularizing the use of the natural sugar D-mannose for elimination of 85-90% of urinary tract infections. He also originated effective natural treatment for seborrheic dermatitis, allergic and viral conjunctivitis, Osgood-Schlatter’s disease, and treatment which improves bone density in the large majority of those with osteoporosis.  In 2013, he resurrected forgotten research and treatment protocols for the application of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) to treat severe neurological problems.  Most recently, he applied published research showing the presence of Helicobacter-pylori in nasal polyps to develop a treatment for nasal polyps. Dr. Wright founded Tahoma Clinic in Washington State in 1973. The “infamous” 1992 FDA armed raid on Tahoma Clinic (“The Great B-Vitamin Bust”) inadvertently popularized the Clinic and natural medicine, with Dr. Wright’s ensuing struggles (and eventual acquittal) serving as major impetus for Congressional reform of vitamin/mineral regulation. He is internationally known for his 29 medical articles and 13 books, selling over 1.5 million copies, with two texts (Book of Nutritional Therapy” and “Guide to Healing with Nutrition”) achieving best-selling status. Since 1996 he has written a popular monthly newsletter emphasizing nutritional and naturally-based medicine with a wide-reaching distribution.  Dr. Jonathan V. My guest, Nancy Novack, was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer in 2004. It had metastasized into her liver. She was too happily innocent about the cancer world and said two now-remarkable things: “Thank goodness, it is not appendicitis,” and “What is stage V?” Nancy says she is oftentimes asked what she did that was so unique, so mysterious that she survived a lethal dose of cancer, the silent killer as ovarian cancer is often called. She says she was extraordinarily fortunate to have an excellent psychologist who worked closely with her to define and refine her personal relationship to her own cancer. She was blessed with a magnificent A-team of friends and family and so many angels that embraced her. She says the opening of my heart to new loves and old brought forth an attitude of blessed gratitude that I had never known before. When I read and re-read the stories written by cancer survivors, I see the universality of the attitude of gratitude in the process of healing.” Nancy’s mission since her “cancer journey” is all about determining the unmet needs of cancer patients, especially the emotional aspects, and doing her best to find a way to fill them. She is a psychologist and has significant concerns that the medical community does not address the levels of anxiety and stress and existential chaos that come with a cancer diagnosis … all of which get in the way of healing. Before I introduce my guest today I want to explain why a discussion of women suffragists is important to holistic health. I have always envisioned holistic health as encompassing physical, mental and spiritual health, the environment, relationships and political action because all influence health.  The work of women suggragists and activists are a part of political action that focus on change to benefit the health and activities of all people in an democratic society. April Young Bennett began studying the lives of suffragists to inform her own activism. As Communications Director for Voices for Utah Children (utahchildren.org), she worked within nationwide networks of advocates for changes to state and federal policies affecting children and parents such as pay equity, healthcare, education and juvenile justice. She was a founding organizer and spokesperson for the activist group Ordain Women (ordainwomen.org), which has been featured in respected news outlets such as the New York Times and the Washington Post. Ordain Women collaborates with the Women’s Ordination Conference (Catholic), Ordain Women Now (Lutheran), Women of the Wall (Jewish), the Parliament of World Religions Women’s Task Force and other networks of religious feminists. April produces and hosts the Religious Feminism Podcast https://www.the-exponent.com/category/podcast/), which provides a forum for feminists across a variety of faith communities and secular feminist organizations to learn about each other and work together toward common goals. She blogs about Mormon feminism at the-exponent.com, which averages 40,000 unique visitors per month. As April has advocated for gender equity, she has noticed parallels between her modern challenges and those experienced by our first wave feminist forebears. When she marched with hundreds of women to a male-only religious meeting, the women were barred from entrance but allowed to listen over the internet, much in the same way Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were barred from the World Anti-Slavery Convention in 1840 but allowed to listen from the balcony, behind a bar and a curtain. On another occasion, she was among many women of her faith who demonstrated their desire for gender equity by wearing pants to church instead of traditional dresses. At least one male church member was so peeved that he threatened to shoot any woman who showed up at church in pants. April was reminded of our suffragist foremothers, who received a similarly visceral reaction when they wore bloomers in the 1850s. She witnessed male religious leaders denouncing outspoken women using many of the same tactics employed against women such as Angelina and Sarah Grimké, Lucy Stone and Sojourner Truth. April began to wonder if her activist community wasn’t recreating the wheel with their frantic brainstorming—the world had not changed as much as they had thought, and certainly some of the feminists who came before them had already addressed some of the problems they were facing. What could she learn from our foremothers? April wanted to read something about this era—one book, preferably, because she was busy—but broad enough to impart the wisdom of activists from a variety of racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. She didn’t want it to be limited to the most famous people because in her experience, movements are built by communities of rank-and-file workers, not solitary heroes. And while history can be fascinating, April was in a hurry—she had urgent causes to support—so she wanted something that focused on what was most pertinent to her modern concerns, like collaborative relationships, strategies and activism, but that would be lighter on dates, meeting minutes and genealogy charts. April didn’t find that book. So she read everything: memoirs, biographies, history books, archived letters and diaries, even those boring meeting minutes. His company also expanded its services to include wireless telecommunications and internet to the Russian Federations. Mr. Oren is the founder of an ongoing  telecommunications and Internet businesses in one of Russia’s largest cities. Mr. Oren graduated from in the former Soviet Union with a Master’s degree in Economics/Specification in Industrial Planning.  Three years later, he completed schooling at the Export Institute of Israel in Tel Aviv. Mr. Oren is fluent in over six languages and has traveled extensively throughout the noted regions. For the show this week, a Facebook friend, Ken Goubeaux,  and I will talk about what we have learned since having Facebook pages and also having cancer either personally (me) or in our families (both of us) and what is needed to successfully overcome cancer. Ken sent the following as background. “My story started back in October 1991 when my father was first diagnosed with bladder cancer and had it scoped and they took out a tumor which they told him at the time they had to leave just a stem, because they didn’t want to cut into the bladder wall for obvious reason. After this surgery they gave him radium treatments which always made him feel bloated. So long story short he never really felt it necessary to change his life style or diet. But was fortunate to survive cancer two more time and the third being a tumor up by the breast bone which they decided to fry it with radiation. Then it was only a year later it came back. I remember to this day the day being February 24 2005 My mom and sister took him to Ohio State and found out it was terminal. They told him a year it was Leiomyosarcoma; rare type only 4 in a million get this type. So it was nearly the end of the dx when I went to the Shrine in Carey Ohio. When I myself was going through severe depression and went there to pray for a peace of mind. Because it seemed about every time I was about dig my self out of the dark hole I fell deeper back into it. So on the way from mass that day I was handed a vision for my blog. Which I thought how brilliant but at the time I didn’t know how to type let alone computers or the internet but it didn’t stop me. And boy after that date I learned that when the student is ready the teachers would appear. From Mant Prowg in Kettering at half price books. While in academia he developed a theory of nursing and health that is used internationally and received national funding for and administered a health care program for homeless and low income individuals and families. My first guest, Dee Dee Ferguson, founded Connect4Hope after her mother was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2017. To give her mom and entire family hope, DeeDee wanted to find and share stories of others who had successfully healed from cancer, but she didn’t know where to turn. This led her to create Connect4Hope, where she shares stories of people who have successfully conquered terminal illness, in order to provide hope and inspiration to others.
