 [46] Hey! That's Mike's Matzah! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:27

Passover is around a week away! Join us for a very kosher episode of HTMH where we ask our Jewish friend "Why this night is different than any other night?" in Hebrew. And by "we" I mean me, Faiqa. I'm feeling very royal today. Enjoy the new episode and have a happy Passover. Or a blessed Good Friday and Happy Easter. Or, you know, just woo-hoo, TGIF. Don't forget you can always direct questions and comments to our Facebook or Twitter account.

 [45] Making the Darkness Disappear | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:35

This week on HTMH, we'll be talking about the tragic shooting of Trayvon Martin on February 26th by a local captain of the neighborhood watch in Sanford, Florida. We discuss whether race played a factor in the events or not. Spoiler alert: someone calls someone a racist. Then we go across the Atlantic to Toulouse, France. It began on March 11 and ended there yesterday evening. A killing spree executed by a Frenchmen named Muhammed Merah that resulted in the death of 4 soldiers, 3 children and their father and teacher. In this episode of Hey Thats My Hummus, we'll talk openly with one another about observations and feelings about this senseless act that affects each of us personally. A special thanks to those of you who have been listening for the past year. Your support, kind words and listenership is appreciated so very much. For real. Seriously. We love you, man.

 [44] This Week's Tragic School Shooting... | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:17

On this episode, we'll be talking about this week's tragic shooting at a high school in Ohio which left 3 students dead, some more with injuries, and a community severely affected trying to figure out what went wrong. What were the factors which led up to this act of violence? Was it the shooter's access to a gun? Was it his upbringing? It's a somber topic, and there are certainly many questions left unanswered. Please let us know what you think -- by posting to our Facebook Wall or by tweeting us.

 [43] Virginia's Conscience Clause & Affirmative Action Discrimination | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:29

Pinocchio's conscience was a cricket. Do you remember that part of the story? Apparently, the Virginia legislature doesn't need crickets because it's got it own little "conscience clause" chirping away on a piece of legislation concerning adoptions that would allow religious organizations to disqualify potential parents they find to be "morally objectionable." Specifically, "same sex couples." *** Abigail Fisher didn't get into the University of Texas. And she feels that her race had something to do with it. Since Fisher is a white woman and not African-American nor Latina, she feels that the University took a look at race as a factor alongside her academic merits. Her lawsuit will be heard at the Supreme Court -- where the issue of Affirmative Action will come up yet again. Are we finally at a time where we no longer need to look at race and ethnicity to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity? *** So, people, are you ready for Hey! That's My Hummus! the week of February 20, 2012? Here's hoping your answer is in the affirmative...

[42] The Contraception Question and Escape from Orthodoxy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:31

To co-pay or not to co-pay? That was the question for a couple of weeks as new legislation was offered by the Obama administration regarding employers being required to offer full coverage for contraception to their employees. Was the resulting compromise? And, of course, the broader question, is access to contraception a basic right? We then switch gears and discuss a recent book by former female member of the Hasidic Satmar sect of Judaism and whether her decision to leave was a choice or an "escape." I also sound incredibly stupid as I can't quite get the distinction between "orthodox" and "Orthodox" or "conservative" and "Conservative" Judaism. "Whatever." Or "whatever." I need flashcards or something-- which we also discuss. Have thoughts, questions, concerns? Thoughts and questions can be directed to our twitter account or Facebook. We don't do concerns.

 [41] Susan G. Komen & Tu B'Shevat | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:45

It was all over the news last week (and this week, too). Was the Susan G. Komen fund's decision to pull over $700,000 from Planned Parenthood politically based or a concerted attempt to avoid what some have called the "culture wars" surrounding abortion? And, then, we switch gears and discuss the connection between ecology, the planet and spirituality in preparation for a "minor", but tasty Jewish holiday called Tu B'Shevat, the New Year for Trees.

 [40] SOPA / PIPA & Barbie | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:16

We talk about stealing paper from work, Jay-Z, Bob Dylan, Justin Beiber, Barbie, Iran, quote some guy from the Beatles, praise capitalism and glorify the Holy Book of Wikipedia. Check out our facebook page for extended media. I totally just came up with that. "Extended media". I call copyright.

[39] Tim Tebow and the Patois Bible | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:06

This week, Mike and I discuss NFL player Tim Tebow's visible faith on the football field and the public's reaction. We also discuss the controversy surrounding the translation of the Bible into Patois, the indigenous language spoken in Jamaica. Comments, questions, or random trivia?  [38] The National Defense Authorization Act and Orthodoxy in Israel | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:39

We're baaaaack. Hope you had a great (insert appropriate holiday here), but time to get back to work! Or not! Now, I don't know if you've heard, but the cool thing to do this year was watch a Big Bang Theory marathon on TBS. The uncool thing to do was actually go out and party OR, according to many progressives and liberals, help amend existing literature that suspends an American's rights to a speedy trial "On the last day of 2011, President Obama signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act For Fiscal Year 2012 (NDAA)...One of the provisions included in the 2012 NDAA is one that allows for American citizens suspected of terrorism to be indefinitely detained in military custody without charge or trial. As Pfc. Bradley Manning begins the pre-trial hearing process after nearly 18 months of being held in military detention, the president has just signed into law a bill that will allow the military to treat American civilians in a similar fashion if they are suspected of conducting activities related to domestic terrorism." -- Amanda Fox-Roucher, "The NDAA Debate," nexgenJOURNAL And then we travel over to the other world and discover that fundamentalism isn't just the dominion of Muslims. In fact, mounting tensions between secular and ultra Orthodox Jews are revealing that going too far isn't just the domain of one faith. Naama Margolis, an 8-year-old from Bet Shemesh, is the most famous girl in Israel today. In fact, nobody can stop talking about her. And why is that? Well, on Friday evening, Naama told her story on the most watched news show in the country. Interviewed by Channel 2's Shai Gal, Naama told how she was afraid to go to school, just a few hundred meters from her house in Bet Shemesh, because Haredim cursed and spit on her for being dressed "immodestly." -- Ami Kaufman, +972, 12/25/2011 Have thoughts about this episode?  [37] Hitler's G.I. Death Camps and Pulling Ads from All-American Muslim | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:14

Here comes a Faiqa-less episode -- her son was under the weather (and we hope he feels better!). Fortunately, Shiny's wife, Kyra, fills in on this episode of HTMH. Kyra was involved with a National Geographic Channel special called Hitler's G.I. Death Camp, chronicling the happenings in the Berga concentration camp where 350 American P.O.W.'s were subjected to forced labor and inhumane conditions. The program debuts on Sunday, December 18 at 9:00pm ET/PT. We also switch gears and discuss Lowe's home improvement's decision to stop advertising on TLC's series All-American Muslim. ... and that's it for 2011! Thanks for listening and participating -- we'll see you in 2012!

 [36] Identities and, um... Muppets | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:45

Does living in American make someone less Jewish? Or Muslim? In this episode, we discuss a series of commercials recently pulled by Israeli PM Netanyahu that were aimed at the U.S. Israeli expat community. Why were the commercials pulled and what do we think about that? Well. You're going to have to listen to find out. Then we switch gears and talk about what a commie that Kermit the Frog is. It ain't easy being... red?

[35] Black Friday and the War on Christmas | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:31

Well, it's the week after Thanksgiving. Which means we've entered "The Holiday Season" -- whatever that means! And what exactly does it mean? What happens on that fateful Friday after Thanksgiving? Why do consumers go all crazy about getting that magical price on a plasma TV by camping out in the freezing cold for hours before? Is this truly the way to spend the holiday? We talk a bit about how "Black Friday" has now become a part of our collective lives in the USA. And after all of that -- we (your favorite Jew and Muslim) delve into the "War on Christmas" -- in which certain retail outlets have opted to use a more ecumenical "Seasons Greetings" instead of "Merry Christmas" to include a more diverse base of customers -- and in which some have returned to "Merry Christmas" out of pressure by those who feel that Christmas has become an endangered species. We have our own views on it as non-Christians. Listen and discover!

[34] Happy Thanksgiving and Mitt Romney. Obviously. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:14

We talk about Thanksgiving and why nobody seems to want to talk about Mitt Romney. I thought it was riveting. To our American listeners, Happy Thanksgiving. To our listeners outside the U.S., well, I suppose your turkeys are glad they don't live in America. So, there's that. To everyone: Thanks so much for your support, the downloads, your encouragement, the downloads, and of course liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter. You're the best listeners EVER.

[33] TLC's All American Muslim and Penn State | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:30

The Learning Channel debuted the first episode of its eight part series set in Dearborn, Michigan called "All American Muslim." Mike and I had the chance to screen the first two episodes before they aired, and, of course, you want to know what we think. And then there's the Penn State thing. Oy.
