Great Contents Tool For Building Your Email List for $10 We hear over and over that the money is in the list and today we have a tool that will help you grow your list through the power of contests. This WordPress plugin allows you to create a contest, and tie it into every email provider on the planet. Here is how it works. You have something to give away You pick how many winners there will be. When someone signs up to your list, they get an entry to win the contest. They are then given a chance and a unique link that identifies them. When they share this link and someone enters the contest the person who referred them is given more entries into the contest. You decide how many additional entries they get. The price is inexpensive as the truth is behind the scenes they are using this as an upsell to get you to join their membership program. You can do what I did, and take the plugin and pass on the membership site. There is an option where you can purchase additional themes for your contest page. The interface is super simple, and you can add a featured image and it will show up in the contest. For more information go to www.contestblitz.com Closing Down Your Band I'm in a situation where the band is shutting down. Keep in mind the following: 1. Bar owners talk to each other 2. Be unprofessional hurts your fans as well. 3. If you do things out of spite, you will not only harm the reputation of your band, but the your own personal reputation Getting a Gig Are You Ready to Gig Yet? You've been practicing, and you think you're ready to play. Here are some things to consider: A typical gig is playing 9pm -1am, or 10pm-2am. Some places will have you play 40 minutes on, and 20 minutes off. Some place will have you play an hour on, and 30 minutes off. The bottom line is you need to know at least forty songs. The bar owner typically doesn't care how long your sets are as long as your breaks aren't so long that people get up and leave. When you have your songs, remember DO NOT PLAY SONGS THAT YOU SUCK AT PLAYING.  I'm not saying the songs sucks. I'm saying for whatever reason, your band doesn't perform it well. Don't worry, as I mentioned before, there are zillions of songs to choose from. Pick one that doesn't suck when you play it. Don't get discouraged if it takes some time to get out of the basement. It may take six months of practicing to get ready.

Should You Stay or Should You Go – Drugs Are Bad Mkay? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:28

Today I read an email from Doug who has a problem with how his band is handling money (we talked about this last week). Here is what is going on. When he replaced their old guitar player, "When I joined, the former guitar player was paid for "his interest" in the PA. " However since then: We have since purchased more PA equipment as a band. I wasn't very happy about it, and voted against such purchases because of the accounting difficulties involved. We don't earn a lot, but we made the purchases, and the members didn't get paid for the gigs we played, but bought the equipment, contributing about $400 each. The band then decided that if a member left, the departing member would not receive anything. Only if the band broke up and the equipment sold, would the members receive their capital account value. It was also decided that the leader would not spend more than $250 without prior band approval. He later purchased $1,100 worth of T-shirts and hats, without prior approval, on the basis that "we would make it all back when we sold the merch." Of course, we have not sold it, so we contributed that money too, in addition to the equipment purchases.   Doug realizes he could leave. for me these are the questions I ask: 1. Why are you in the band? I played with a band for seven years (as a hobby) where I made $50 a gig, but I played music I LOVED, and the guys had very little drama (I handled the money and we had clear cut rules that people FOLLOWED). 2. If you're in it to make money, then look in your wallet. Are you making money? I don't play for free (I do occasionally play a charity gig). I wouldn't pay for free. The band I'm in we pay the singer a bit more as its his PA. I don't have a problem with that as it is wear and tare on his system. If something breaks he replaces it. I am running an online class about Podcasting in Six weeks I am going to pay $99 a month for Go To Webinar. I am charging $99 for the first class (it sold out and future classes are at $149). My first class will make roughly $900. I'm going to spend $100 and end up with $800. Sometimes you have to spend money to make money.  As long as you are making money, and its enough money for you (which is completely dependent on you). 3. If you decide you are going to leave, start looking for a new band while you have a band. Then when you find a band to move to, do the professional thing and give them plenty of notice. Don't leave them hanging without a player to cover your position.  Drugs Are Bad Mkay? In today blurb from my book Get Your Band Out of the Basement, I explain that you will more than likely run into people who use drugs, alcohol, etc. I point out that there are NUMEROUS musicians whose lives were taken WAY TOO SOON because of their use of drugs. So my question is, "Why play with a loaded gun?" I'm not sure I ever heard someone say, "I'm so glad I started shooting heroine in the 90's its made my life so much better. I've never heard, "Thank God I was so drunk I didn't feel anything.." I'm not a prude, but if I have a choice of a band that parties during practice and gigs and one that doesn't, I'm going with the sober group. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox.  Selling From the Stage – Getting That Gig | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:26

In today's episode we talk about selling items from the stage, and we also talk about getting that first gig. In my "tales from the road" I talk about playing with a fill in that got so drunk he couldn't even play. Selling More Merch at Shows In a recent article by David Hopper he put together an article called A Psychological "Trick" to Sell More Music (and T-Shirts) at Live Shows  in the article he talks about how we can learn from places like Subway, Chipotle, etc who have a tip jar at the end of their ordering process. Moe's is a place that has a system in place that when someone leaves a tip the cashier rings a bell and the whole line says "thank you". Can you imagine the pressure on the person behind the person who just tipped the row? Cause if you don't tip, everyone  will know. Benefits of Selling From the Stage 1. It gives you an opportunity to plug your stuff. 2. It provides social proof. 3. It gives "status" to your fans. You can find scripts in Dave's book Six-Figure Musician - How to Sell More Music, Get More People to Your Shows, and Make More Money in the Music Business (Music Marketing [dot] com Presents) [easyazon-block asin="B00B854872" align="none"] You can also get this book for free by going to www.marketingmusician.com/audible and get a free audio book when you sign up.
