 Cider Riot! – Abram Goldman-Armstrong | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:34:16

Cider Riot! ciders are, bar-none the best cider available. After running into Abram and trying their hopped cider  Everybody Pogo, I understood why ciders are becoming more and more popular. This particular cider is dry, crisp and delicious. On their website they describe themselves like this: Cider Riot is a crowd funded urban cidery in Portland Oregon dedicated to producing high quality ciders from Cascadian grown apples. With tradition as our guide and our roots firmly planted in the rich soils of our bioregion, our urban cidery will produce refreshing, flavorful ciders. During the interview Abram addresses the apple shortage that we’ve been hearing about in the news, Kickstarter lessons, cider making, glycol free refrigeration, and details of embarking on this Cider venture.  Barley’s Angels Presents Julia Herz at Rogue Hop Farm | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:48:39

Barley’s Angels Farm to Bottle event at Rogue Hop Farm featured a number of presentations, tours and tastings showcasing Terroir to table quality. Craft Brew Cast recorded Palate Trips presented by Julia Herz and now, you too can take the Palate Trip. Amid hops and hives, rye and pumpkins in the Wigrich Appellation of Independence Oregon, while roosters crow, Julia lays the foundation for a journey, acquainting us with the flavors of each of five beer styles and how they compliment or diminish sweet, salty, spicy or acidic favors and what cuts through richness, calms acid, or balances spice. Then the tasting begins with Julia and participants sharing their impressions along the journey. Assemble the following beer styles and food items to follow along: a pilsner, berliner weisse, brown, oatmeal stout, and imperial IPA, blue cheese, chocolate, feta, caramel corn, pepperoni, a slice of kosher dill pickle, and a dollop  spicey mustard on a cracker. Barley’s Angels is an organization offering women more than 138 educational craft beer experiences in 2012, produced by a global network of chapters. Launched  in 2011 at Rogue Distillery and Public House in Portland Oregon, there are now chapters in five countries. Chapters operate autonomously bringing craft beer professionals and experts together with eager female consumers to expand the appreciation,  understanding and sharing of craft beer. To form a chapter or find one in your area visit http://barleysangels.org Julia Herz is Craft Beer Program Director for the Brewers Association and Publisher of CraftBeer.com. She is a BJCP beer judge, award-winning homebrewer, a Certified Cicerone® and leader of American Craft Beer Week. Her areas of expertise include: Resources and education on craft beer, general statistics on the craft brewer segment, beer styles and trends plus craft beer and food pairing. In her role at the Brewers Association she serves as an advocate for and educator about U.S. craft brewers, and is a spokesperson for the Association. [source: brewersassociation.org] Rogue Hop Farm is home to a historic “Hop-n-Bed”, Chatoe Rogue tasting room, chickens, turkeys, bees,  pot bellied pigs, hops yard, rye fields, gardens, the hop processing facilities, and the James and Frannie Coleman Conference Center. It is located along the 45th parallel, the “sweet spot” for hops growing in the Northern Hemisphere. During summer, the long periods of daylight and short periods of nighttime create ideal conditions for growing hops. This combination of long days and short nights are necessary to produce the hormones within the plant that stimulate growth of vines and flowers, leading to an abundance of cones for harvest in the fall. — Post by Christine Jump LINKS: Download this episode Share this post: Barley’s Angels Rogue Hop Farm Brewers Association Rogue Ales CraftBeer.com Craft Beer and Food Pairing Specifics Pairing chart Rolling Boil Blues Band Celebrator Beer News Technorati Tags: craft beer, food, Rogue Ales, Julia Herz, podcast, Barley’s Angels, women, tastings, pairing, Rogue Hop Farm, Celebrator Beer News The post Barley’s Angels Presents Julia Herz at Rogue Hop Farm appeared first on Craft Brew Cast: Brewmaster's Interviews.  Breakside Brewery’s Ben Edmunds | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:18

At the beautiful Breakside Brewery in Portland, Oregon I interviewed Brew Master Ben Edmunds  over 7 tasters of his fine craft beer. Each beer was an exquisite representation of it’s style. The quality of these brews is evidenced by the 2011 Great American Brew Festival medal awarded the Dry Irish Stout.  This was no doubt one of many awards to come for this innovative brewery. In this interview Ben tells us about Breakside from it’s beginnings through today’s expansion plans. He also shares the surprising fruits of collaborations with award winning chefs. Together they’ve created unique beers that subtly merge culinary flavors in complex layers. The teacher in him peeks out as he discloses “how to” details, tricks and tips including use of alternative ingredients. Chestnuts anyone? His journey to becoming a professional craft brewer is surprising yet the approach he has taken may be a necessary one for those wishing to succeed in today’s Craft Brewing community. Finally we wrap up the the program with a tour of this modest brewery, where the real magic begins.  Hair of the Dog Brewing Co.’s Alan Sprints | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:14:11

Brewmaster Alan Sprints founded Hair of the Dog Brewing Company in 1992. Inspired by Winter Ales Alan’s brewing focuses on robust, complex beers. This small batch brewery produced roughly 700 barrels of beer in 2009.  These extraordinary, rare brews are bottle conditioned, and are therefore ideal for aging. Described in Malt Advocate magazine as having , “the best aging potential of any American-Brewed beer”, this brewery has found it’s niche. Not only among those who appreciate Vintaged beer, but in American Micro Brewing history. During our interview this veteran Brew Master shares strategies for new brewers, unique features of his brewery and exposes tough decisions that one must make with regard to profitability and craft.  Firestone Walker Brewery’s Matt Brynildson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:09:40

Firestone Walker Brewery’s Brewmaster Matt Brynildson and I enjoyed a beer at one of the many events surrounding the Oregon Brewers Festival. Named Mid Sized Brewery of the Year in 2007, this one-of-a-kind brewery uses an oak barrel fermentation program with a unique twist. In 2008 they walked away from the Great American Brewers Festival with 6 medals. Including a gold medal for Union Jack IPA in the most competitive category with over 100 entries. Matt is an active supporter of the Glen Hay Falconer Memorial Foundation’s scholarship program and even teaches at the Siebel Institute in Chicago Illinois. Listen as he shares his insights into brewing, barrel aging and operations at this successful brewery, as well as upcoming never before released specialty ales from both the Nectar and Firestone Walker brands.  Sasquatch Legacy 2009 at Walking Man Brewing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:49:27

Glen Hay Falconer Foundation Brewing Scholarship 2008 winners Patrick Miller and Vasilios Glestos brewed the latest collaboration ale for the Sasquatch Legacy Project early in 2009. I was there with my recorder capturing conversations with the brewing team at Walking Man Brewery. We discuss the style that they are making and the characteristics that they intend to brew into the beer as well as the techniques employed to achieve those results. I put Walking Man’s owner Bob Craig on the spot when I ask why he offers up his brewery and resources for this project. In a rare interview he shares his passion for brewing and brewers education. Bob has rallied suppliers, labs, distributors and pubs behind the Legacy Project that funds the GHF Foundation scholarships to the Seibel institute in Chicago Illinois. Vasilios is currently a brewer with Rock Bottom. He once brewed at BJ’s in Jensen Beach, Portland Oregon. There he maintained a Barrel Aging program by which they served Barrel Aged Ale every day! In these interviews he reveals how he managed to accomplish it in that very small brewery. Patrick is the first home brewer to be awarded this prestigious scholarship. He humbly contributes to Craft Beer awareness in his community and is an officer with the Oregon Brew Crew. He offers pointers and insights for those of you that are considering applying for this Scholarship. Pictured above Jeremy Landers clearly enjoys the 2009 Sasquatch Legacy Ale at the release party held at the world famous Horse Brass Pub in Portland, Oregon. Horse Brass owner Don Younger donates 100% of the moneys collected from the sale of this beer to the Foundation. Enough of my babble.  The Pike Brewing Company: Drew Cluley and Alumni Brewers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:29:36

Drew Cluley invited me to The Pike Brewing Company for their Vertical Barley Wine Tasting and was a fabulous host. They served six vintages of the Old Bawdy side by side to a packed house in the Museum and restaurant in Seattle Washington. It is remarkable how well those beers have each aged. Fal Allen had brewed the three oldest ones, and Drew the three latest ones. If you haven’t tried Old Bawdy, get ahold of a few bottles, enjoy some of them fresh and let the rest age! In this show you will hear co-owner Charles Finkel along with Drew Cluley, and Fal Allen each address the crowd with stories from the risqué beginnings of the brewery through its evolution to its current location. Later, you’ll join us in a lively round table discussion on the topic of Beer vs. Wine and more with Pike’s alumni of brewers including Dick Cantwell now with Elysian Brewing Company, Fal Allen now at Archipelago Brewing of Singapore, Kevin Forhan now at Ram Restaurant and Brewery, and Janelle Pritchard now at Snoqualmie Falls Brewing Company. The Pike Brewing Company is a must see location in Seattle. The staff makes you feel as though you’ve come home, and the breweriana collections in the museum are unbelievable. Add to the experience the fabulous beer, and just you can’t go wrong. The Pike Brewing Company Archipalego Brewing Elysian Brewing Co. Ram Brewery and Restaurant Snoqualmie Falls Brewing Co.  HopValley Brewing Co.’s Trevor Howard | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

HopValley Brewing Co. had been open for about a week when I stopped by. They have done a remarkable job of opening this beautiful restaurant and brewery in very short order. Lot’s of light and warm wood, not only is the decor inviting, but the beers are outstanding. This is a worthwhile destination just a block or so off of the beaten path in Springfield, Oregon. Brewmaster and part owner Trevor Howard has already proven himself to be a world class brewer with several medals in his portfolio. Now he will have the freedom to create and experiment with beer styles and processes. This is the type of brewer that will always have something new and exciting to try. Like the Vanilla Porter, which definitely made my “favorites” list. Trevor and I just fired up the recorder and proceeded to chat about HopValley, opening a restaurant and brewery, the proposed 1900% Oregon beer tax increase, brews to expect, and more. All more interesting to hear Trevor share, than for me to list here. General Manager Scott Trotter tells us the history behind the stunning wooden bar. Marty Tremaine reveals some of the rhyme and reasoning behind HopValley’s theme and the historic images throughout the restaurant. Make the pilgrimage to beervana, and spend and afternoon at HopValley brewing Co. Discover world class beers, spectacular food, and stimulating conversation. These kind folks have donated a couple of t-shirts. Send me an email with HopValley Brewing Co. in the subject field for your chance to win one. I have one men’s and one woman’s styles. You’ll find my email link at craftbrewcast.com, and I’ll pick the winners 30 days from the date of this post.  Stone Brewing’s Greg Koch-GABF 2008 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:18:40

It is rare to see a business commit so completely to environmental and socially responsible practices. Despite higher operating costs and logistical challenges that those very practices present, Stone Brewing Company World Bistro and Gardens is a model to that end. Greg reveals Stone’s unwavering focus to conscientiously invest in responsible, sustainable business practices, as well as safe and healthy choices for their guests while supporting local agriculture. For example; there are bans of certain ingredients at Stone, and a fleet of hybrid vehicles for their sales team. Greg Koch and co-owner/master brewer Steve Wagner demonstrate that sustainability means business success. They have taken the risk, made the investments and are realizing overwhelming growth. This brewery and restaurant is a model of how business can thrive. “Going Green” and being a “Socially Responsible” business is not a black and white proposition. Equipment required to minimize the businesses environmental impact, may incur increased energy usage. Hence, tough choices and consequences to balance. Stone Brewing Company is putting their money where their hearts are with the beers and the Bistro. And it’s working for the business. Listen to Greg’s passionate interview. Follow the leader – Stone Brewing Co Music this episode is generously provided by Starboard Green under the pseudonym Bob Dystilan, performing The Beers They are A-Changin’. Band members Brad Paxton and Josh Nichols co-wrote these lyrics to the tune of Bob Dylan’s classic, The Times They Are A-Changin’. Brad sent this tidbit of background for you:   The 2006 Dogfish Head Bocce Ball Tournament required four people to a team. The teams competed in two events – the actual Bocce Ball game (where we didn’t exactly excel) and a team theme/originality contest. We decided to go as ‘the Beerniks,’ and basically took key icons in the Beatnik world and gave them beer related names, such as ‘Bob Dystilan,’ ‘Ale’n Ginsbeerg’ and ‘Dr. Timothy Beery’ (who, instead of LSD, distributed bags of hops to people). This episodes kicks of my Green Series with the Beer Institute’s President Jeff Becker. Jeff provides a history of ecologically sound practices in the brewing industry as well as discussing current technologies and breweries raising the bar in this area. Jeff also offers up resources for those of you seeking to minimize your brewery’s footprint. Ben Love with Portland Oregon’s Eco-Pub Hopworks Urban Brewery touches on the myriad of building and brewing steps they have taken. A tremendous move for a small local brewery demonstrating their commitment to the environment and their community. It has paid of in a big way. I join him on the eve of their opening night. The Local Brew is a production company producing in depth coverage of breweries and what’s behind them. The host is entertaining, and the camera work is outstanding.
