What you need: Business Skills with finance, sales and people — from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio] Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” When we talk about careers, we often talk about your knowledge, your skills, your deep understanding of the work you do. While this is certainly important, there can be another aspect of career that is lacking in many of us. No matter how well we know our work, if we don’t also have some basic business skills it can make our career much more difficult.  Showing your clients the way — from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Showing your clients the way — from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio] Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” Part of any great career, regardless of industry, focus or technology, is the ability to remember what it was like to not know something. As we gain knowledge and skills in our work, we can come to think of others as ignorant and clueless, if not outright stupid. This is a danger zone for any careerist as it leads to arrogance, hubris and — in many cases — obnoxious behavior. We can begin to think we are the smartest folks in the room and everyone else is an idiot. Of course, it only takes one bad day, one bad project, one bad result to bring us crashing back to reality.  Sharing your interests and personal projects can lead to paying work for others from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Sharing your interests and personal projects can lead to paying work for others from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” Many people like to think that there is work and there is play and there is never any crossover between them. We do “work” to earn money to pay for our food, our clothing, our houses. We “play” to escape our work and have fun. I was reminded this week, though, that playing can also result in more creative and fulfilling work, often in entirely new areas. In today’s work world, where everyone is an entrepreneur regardless of where they work, we all need to be looking for those new, unique ways, to expand our work and build a career that is both lucrative and fulfilling. Often, this means engaging in new ideas and projects simply for the sheer fun of it. I can tell you from personal experience that you never know where it might lead.  What You Need: A decent place to live from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

What You Need: A decent place to live from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” Our lives and our careers are deeply affected by our surroundings. We can try to ignore the noise, trash, overcrowding and other issues, but it really isn’t completely possible. They can effect us at a subconscious level and add burdens to our sometimes overburdened lives. When you are trying to build the career you deserve, you need a physical environment that helps and soothes you, not one that is constantly confronting you and taking energy away from your more important work. The act of taking action brings power to any situation and no more so than when you suffer a career setback. Perhaps you didn’t get the job or the promotion or you’ve been laid off.  Never too early to introduce your children to career concepts from the Career Opportunities Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Never too early to introduce your children to career concepts from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” You can’t know which career you want unless you know about a lot of careers. You can’t have a great career unless you know what one looks like. This is why it is so important for children to be introduced to careers and career concepts as early as possible. This doesn’t mean sitting them down and lecturing them about various careers. Rather it means being aware of their interests and desires, finding the “teachable” career moments that happen every day and making the most of them. Help your child find a career that suits them — a career that they will enjoy — a career they deserve.  What you need: Supportive Family and Friends from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

What you need: Supportive Family and Friends from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” Of all the features of a successful career, an abundance of supportive family and friends is high on the list. Life itself is enough of a struggle. Without the support of those around you, you will find it difficult to learn and grow in your life and your career. That said, supportive family and friends aren’t always to be found naturally. You may have to create, cultivate and convince them of how important their support can be in your life. In some desperate cases, you may find that those who should be the most supportive aren’t — or can’t be — for a variety of reasons. Understanding these reasons — and the people around you — can help you to overcome those situations and better recognize those who truly have your better interests at heart.  Don’t be the employee that everyone wishes would just retire from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Don’t be the employee that everyone wishes would just retire from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” We have all seen them in nearly every place we work — employees that should have retired years ago. They do their work as if they are living in another era. They are left to plod along  in the same way they have for years while others have to work around them. What is odd is they are often old before their time. They might still be in the 40’s, but their ideas, preconceptions and actions are old, tired and ineffective. Worse still, what if you are the employee that everyone wishes would just retire? What does it say about you, your attitudes and your work? What can you do about it? It might meet with your intellectual interests and native talents. It is an area of work that is becoming more necessary and more in demand. It has a large impact on your community and the world at large. It is satisfying to you personally and helps you to accomplish your personal, family and community goals.  No one earns the right to “coast” in their career from the Career Opportunities Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

No one earns the right to “coast” in their career from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” As you get to be older — I just turned 49 myself — there is a problematic thought process that can creep into your daily thinking. When you are faced with a new career challenge, a new career idea, a new career thought — you balk. You think about all the work that this new thought is going to require and you wonder if it is really worth the time and trouble. To use an older term, you get “set in your ways.” You find the status quo is a much easier place to live. In some cases, you might even be thinking, “Well, I’m not going to be around in this job (or at all) for much longer, so why bother with all this new work?” Read No one earns the right to “coast” in their career from the Career Opportunities Podcast One-To-One Career Consulting Now available exclusively to Career Opportunities readers and Listeners.  What you need #2: Work that you love from the Career Opportunities Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

What you need #2: Work that you love from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” What do you need to have a successful career? I think one of the most important parts of any career is finding work that you love to do. Great careers are not built on work you don’t mind doing or work you can do without any effort or work you can tolerate. Great careers are built on doing work that you love to do — work that you can’t imagine not doing — and work that excites you, invigorates you and gets you out of bed each morning ready to tackle whatever comes your way.  Read What you need #2: Work that you love from the Career Opportunities Podcast One-To-One Career Consulting Now available exclusively to Career Opportunities readers and Listeners.  Our own actions matter more than President, Pope or Prime Minister from the Career Opportunities Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Our own actions matter more than President, Pope or Prime Minister from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” In these days of global, instantaneous, communication, we are much more aware of what is happening in the higher circles of government. We know what bills are making their way to the House floor, what debates we will see in the House of Commons and how the latest tax law changes will effect us. That said, due to this better communication, we often overestimate how much effect these large governmental organizations have on our day-to-day life. In the worst cases, we can begin to ignore what is happening in our own backyard, in our own families, in our own careers. It is important to remember that your daily actions will have far more effect on your life than nearly any governmental action.  Read Our own actions matter more than President, Pope or Prime Minister from the Career Opportunities Podcast One-To-One Career Consulting Now available exclusively to Career Opportunities readers and Listeners.  Slow and Steady: Monitor the trend line to make your progress visible [Audio] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Slow and Steady: Monitor the trend line to make your progress visible Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” While it may seem that everything is hurry, rush, go, go go in today’s world, life still moves along at a very steady, slow pace. In our careers and in our lives, we can push, we can press, but both often unroll at a rather unhurried pace. Sure we can push for that new job, that new promotion, that new house, but we can only hurry life along so much. At these times it is always wise to remember the old cliche that “slow and steady wins the race.” It is through constant, on-going action that we change our lives and careers. Sure, there will be dramatic shifts in our lives, but these dramatic shifts are often underpinned by weeks, months and years of steady preparation and progress.  In Praise of Praise from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

In Praise of Praise from the Career Opportunities Podcast   Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” Now that you have this image in mind, how do you think others feel when you praise them. If, like most human beings, they have a similar reaction, wouldn’t you like to be the cause of those same feelings in others? The sad truth, though, is that while we love to receive praise ourselves, most of us are absolutely lousy at giving it to others. Blame it on the American work or life ethic of rugged individualism, the harsh nature of work today, or simple inattention, but far too often we err on the side of criticism when a little praise might be just what we — and those around us — need.  Breaking the negativity cycle from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Breaking the negativity cycle from the Career Opportunities Podcast   Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities”   As we all know, it is easy to carried away with the emotion of a crowd. Whether it is cheering at a football game, singing along at a great concert or crying along with the audience at a movie or play, we can experience great uplifting emotion. While we can get carried away with good emotions, it is even easier — and I think, greatly damaging — when we are carried away with the negative emotions of a crowd. When we ride the downward spiral of negative emotions, we can reach depths we never could have imagined. Often in our careers and in our lives, we can be faced with overwhelming negative emotions from groups both large and small. For our own, personal, self preservation, though, we need to to break the negativity cycle when it occurs.   Read Breaking the negativity cycle from the Career Opportunities Podcast One-To-One Career Consulting Now available exclusively to Career Opportunities readers and Listeners.
