Gillnetters account for a large percentage of the commercial fishing fleet of New England. Though its history is centuries-old, beginning with the Native Americans, contemporary gillnetting took hold only in the 1970's with the modernization of the small boat fleet from handlining and longlining.

There are only a handful of these traditional fishing traps remaining in the world, three of them are here on Cape Cod. This one is run by the Lucas Trap Co. in Chatham on Nantucket Sound. Fishing mostly for mackerel and squid, each year sees more and more seaweed created from the encroaching residential septic systems.

Dogfish were once thought to be a trash fish. In these days of diminishing cod stocks, however, old methods of fishing combine with this new fish stock to keep the fisheries alive.
