A little more than a year ago, CBC journalist Mellissa Fung was kidnapped while working in Afghanistan. She was taken by armed gunmen and was held for 28 days in a small, dark cave in the isolated Afghan mountains. After her release last November, Fung did one interview - with CBC Radio's Anna Maria Tremonti. And that award-winning interview is the feature this week on And the Winner Is... Winner of a Gold World Medal at the 2009 New York Festivals.

In Ontario, a clinical trial is underway that involves chilling the bodies of people whose hearts have stopped functioning. The hope is that hypothermia will allow doctors to reach beyond the threshold of clinical death, and pull patients back to the world of the living. In her documentary "Back from the Brink," freelance documentary producer Tina Pittaway speaks with a man who counts himself among the fortunate 5% of people brought back to life. Winner Of Gold Medal, 2009 New York Festivals.

And the Winner Is... November 4, 2009 - Speaking the Truth
More than 50 journalists have been killed in the Philippines since 1986, when democracy was restored to the country. Many of those cases remain unsolved. Marlene Esperat was a government whistle-blower-turned-journalist whose beat was exposing graft and corruption in the department of agricultural in the Philippines. "Speaking the Truth," is a documentary about the life and death of Marlene Garcia Esperat by freelance journalist Declan Hill.

And the Winner Is... October 28, 2009 - Remembering Georg Tintner: A Documentary Tribute
Georg Tintner started out as a singer with the Vienna Boys Choir in his homeland of Austria. He went on to become a world-renowned conductor who ultimately made his home in Halifax. Tintner served as the director of Symphony Nova Scotia and was recognized with the Order of Canada. Today, we celebrate the life of the late conducter with "Remembering Georg Tintner: A Documentary Tribute."
