GondwanaSound is back, well we never really went away but following the birth of baby Gondwana it became tricky to upload the shows and keep upto date with podomatic. Welcome to this weeek's round the world music adventure, which starts off with two evocative pieces of music on the theme of waving loved ones goodbye as they go off to war, not knowing if you will ever see them again. When I first heard the track from Sofia Marinova it bought be to tears even now, I can barely listen to it again without welling up. Powerful stuff. We have some newly released material from Cesaria Evora, Bonga, Mulatu Astatke, Africa Express. We reflect on the success of Tiris, the Saharawi band who came together in the refugee camps of South West Algeria. Our album of the week comes from Robert Maseko, Jumping Bango, celebrating ten years of music making. In the second half of the broadcast David Paskell joins me live in the studio, David will be covering the folk side of things for us, both traditional and leftfield. Today he introduces us to three singer songwriters who are influencing his own compositions. Hope you hear something you enjoy you can read more and listen more on the website - http://www.gondwanasound.co.uk

090729GondwanaSound Part One.
We're back from this year's WOMAD festival at Charlton Park, a difficult drive through lashing rain.  Listening to Bardot State, which Pathaan dropped into my hands at the festival, we managed to get lost in the pitch darkness of the English Countryside but with fine musical accompaniment. This week on GondwanaSound we bring Radiothons, WOMAD encounters including Victor Deme cooking it up, Beat Boxers and a Modern Mongolian nomad all fired up from the night of hip hop and beat boxing that was WOMAD's SIam tent on Satruday night.   Add in some  new releases and vintage Nigerian funk - and we have another eclectic GondwanaSound round the world music adventure.

GondwanaSound with Ian McMillan and Luke Goss
Joining me in the studio in January were two of the Ian McMillan Orchestra. Ian McMillan is well known as poet in residence for Barnsley FC and beat poet for Humberside police and a Radio 3 broadcaster. Luke Carver Goss plays accordian amongst other instruments, writes commissioned peices and plays in a number of bands including the much praised Tea Hodzic Trio. The idea was to talk about their tour and new album Sharp Stories but somehow it didn't quite work out like that. I blame the coffee! The duo are masters of improvisation and it turned out to be a session full of mischief including the special improvisation for GondwanaSound. Enjoy. Copyright GondwanaSound all rights reserved. GondwanaSound is a two hour magazine style broadcast of global roots and grooves, every Wednesday 10-midday on Sheffield Live! 93.2FM. Further details on http://www.gondwanasound.co.uk

GondwanaSound tribute to Andy Palacio January 2008
The "world" music community were shocked to hear that Andy Palacio had lost his fight for life and had died in his homeland of Belize on 19th January. Andy Palacio had the most extraordinary year in 2007 receiving nominations, awards and accolades for his music and for his ceaseless promotion of Garifuna culture and language. It made the news even more difficult to comprehend. This tribute was first broadcast on GondwanaSound / Sheffield Live! 93.2FM on 22nd January and whilst on air Jill received a bulletin from his record company to say that in an unprecedented move the BBC had bought forward the announcement that Andy Palacio had indeed won the best artist of the Americas category in the BBc Awards for World Music for 2008. This tribute is mixed with some of his music. Copyright - GondwanaSound, all rights reserved, please do not rebroadcast or make copies without prior consent. I was delighted to meet with Cistica "Cimai" Trifan and Radulescu Lazar of the mighty Fanfare Ciocarlia, from Zece Prajini. They bought their unique style of speed brass playing and Ancient Secrets of Brass to Manchester's Royal College of Music in January. Many thanks to Florence Arpin and to Henry Ernst from the recording label Asphalt Tango who stayed with us to offer translation services. Enjoy the interview that was first broadcast along with some of their music on GondwanaSound / Sheffield Live! in February 2008.
