Global SoulJah and BBE Records Radio Show 21 November 2009
Gargarin provide this weeks gentle introduction to the show with the mellowest of the recent remixes of their material courtesy of Beesley Rothko, look out for the Robert Logan remix as well - an altogether darker nastier affair. The Heavy take a break from their more normally more raucous material with a nice mellow track called In Time. I then whip through a couple of beat snippets from the new Melting Pot Music double CD showcasing the talents of Uno, Testiculo & Suff Daddy. The new Lizz Fields remixes are a pretty sorry bunch with the exception of The Journey remix of When I See Love which takes this soulful lady into, for her, uncharted leftfield territory. The DJ Bootsie album is sounding great, hailing from Budapest his album is a great collection of hip hop and cinematic beat excursions and a great listen from start to finish - look out for it really shortly. I also had to drop another Portformat track from his great interstellar debut this time including the vocal talents of Dudley Perkins & Georgia Anne Muldrow. Huess is a great new beat making talent from the seemingly endless UK production line. Taking his inspiration from people like Take, keep your eye on him it looks like he's developing into a unique voice. After the release of their acclaimed double CD earlier this year Senseless are gearing up for 2010 with some new material and the beatmaking talents of Ghosttown and rising vocal star of Badness are a great combination. One of my favorite party rocking DJs Saffrolla is also gearing up for a BIG 2010 as I tease you with a forthcoming release called Catch Their Breath with MC Angel, he's got some other more than tasty little tracks to come as well, trust me! Martin Kemp, with the best haircut on Myspace, is providing some welcome deepness to the UK Funky scene, look out for his new 12 coming really soon on Blunted Robots. Ray Lugo is a NYC modern day Latin don and his latest cut for Milan's Record Kicks label is a dancefloor jazz winnner. Mamadou Barry's debut album during his twilight years is a great listen and I'm particularly liking his version of Take Five. Los Amigos Invisibles from Venezuela have always been worth a listen for some great electronic latin fusion and their new EP on Lovemonk is great and I'm particularly liking the Boohgaloo Zoo Rmx. To end the show I then finish with another killer track from the DJ Spinna compiled disco compilation on the mighty BBE. Gagarin - Straiff, Beesley Rothko Bassic Mix (Geo Records promo) The Heavy - In Time (Counter Records) Suff Daddy - D.I. Luv (MPM promo) Uno - 3rd (MPM promo) Lizz Fields - When I see Love, The Journey Remix (Blue Fields Records) DJ Bootsie - Kormenet/Procession (BBE promo) Portformat - Mothership feat Dudley Perkins & Georgia Anne Muldrow (Tokyo Dawn Promo) Huess - A Simple Method (Inaudible Answer) Ghosttown ft Badness & Dajila - You Know (Senseless Records promo) Saffrolla - Catch Their Breath feat MC Angel (Test) Martin Kemp - After The Night (Blunted Robots promo) Ray Lugo's L.E.S. Express - Roda de Samba (Record Kicks) Mamadou Barry - Africa Five (World Village) Los Amigos Invisibles - Plastic Woman, Boohgaloo Zoo rmx (Lovemonk Promo) South Bronx - The Bottom Line (BBE Records) Here's a couple of little tasters of the incredible new DJ Bootsie album - a little album sampler and a great video for the Mosquito Dance track from the album:

It's all about the soul music to start the show with a great new track from The Inns & Miles Bonny, beautiful stuff. I then trip down to Burkina Faso for some old school African Soul from the newly discovered vocal genius of Victor Deme, who's been singing all his life in local clubs with no recognition outside his local area - until now! Dokaka is a lunatic Japanese beat boxer but not as you know them. His album has now been released outside the land of the the rising sun and you can now discover more easily why he was involved on Bjork's last album. Lou Rhodes from Lamb is the first signing to Jason Swinscoe's new record label Motion Audio, look out for the album in March 2010 with more releases planned. Mr. Scruff is about to release a rare non Ninja outing on Prime Numbers with multi instrumentalist and all round musical don Kaidi Tatham and it's a winner. To follow I drop a track from the excellent compilation coming on BBE very soon that takes a look at the disco remix talents of the under recognised John Morales check the killer disco of Curtis Hairston! Analog Africa have recently released another lovingly packaged compilation (other labels take note!) this time focusing on the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou - just buy it is all I can say! Jose Roberto Bertrami from Azymuth has also recently put out a, rather too suave, album of jazzy bossa vibes but there are a couple of less cheesy tracks on there and No Tempo Da Bossa is one of them. Medline hails from a funky crew running out of Paris, look out for a killer little 7" about to drop on his own Propaground label coming very soon. I've mentioned the new King Midas Sound album before and this week I'm treating you to yet another taster from the album - watch out and hold tight for the release at the end of November. Unni Lovlid is a great Norwegian folk singer prone to some little electronic leftfield excursions and ambient field recordings, I saw her live recently in concert and I recommend, if you get the chance, that you do as well. Julien Dyne's album is about to drop on BBE and it's deep and just to show you how deep I drop a spiritual jazz inspired number from the forthcoming release. DJ Food is one of the best dj's in the world and his new LP, produced with the aid of King Cannibal, is about to drop, check the instrumental version of the The The cover which is fine way to end the show. The Inns & Miles Bonny - J. Birly (MPM promo) Victor Deme - DJon'maya (Chapa Blues Records) Dokaka - Rest in Peace (Dual Plover) Lou Rhodes - There For The Taking (Motion Audio promo) Mr. Scruff & Kaidi Tatham - Fresh Noodles (Prime Numbers promo) Curtis Hairston - I Want You (BBE promo) Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou - Agnon Dekpe (Analog Africa) Jose Roberto Bertram - No Tempo Da Bossa (Far Out Records) Medline - Mercado Negro (Propaground promo) King Midas Sound - Miles and Miles (Hyperdub promo) Unni Lovlid - Bak Vaker Verda (Grappa) Julien Dyne - Spirits (BBE promo) DJ Food - Giant, Instrumental (Ninja Tune promo) For you visual obsessives here are a couple of videos one highlighting just how mental Dokaka is and one just to highlight why you should be listening to Victore Deme - enjoy..

Straight in at the deep end this week with one of my new Womex music discoveries, Kouyate & Neerman. I was fortunate to see this due live a couple of weeks ago and the project with Kouyate on Balafon and Neerman on his vibes linked to an effects unit and distortion pedals is great forward thinking Afro Jazz fusion. The Jazz Chronicles album is out and although some of the beats are a bit rigid at times they really did the business with the One For Joe track. Portformat is a great new intergalactic hip hop project with an amazing roster of vocal talent including Dudley Perkins, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Shaunise amongst many others. Robert Strauss is coming through with some nice new material with a future soul touch but using the decidedly old school vocalist and previous collaborator, the evergreen Leroy Burgess. Kylie Auldist has been given an amazing edit by Ashley Beedle to turn her In A Week, In A Day track into an end of night soul diamond. Tony Allen is working on more projects than your average government this year and his latest is a couple of tracks soundtracking an imaginary blaxploitation movie, deep afro funk flavour. Soundway have just released a new compilation focusing on the vintage sounds of the French Caribbean and I'm happy to report it is up to their usual impeccably packaged and selected standards although the Biguine and Creole rhythms will be news to a lot of listeners, check it for some vintage global freshness. Another discovery at Womex was Cacique'97 a great Afrobeat project from Portugal taking the sound in interesting new directions with some pan African flavours and even the sound of Brasil, great project and top guys. Debruit is going from strength to strength as I drop one of his new tracks on Civil Music, with nods to his Congo Whoomph track earlier this year but with some great more melodic African touches. Incidentally I saw him live last night in Barcelona and he rocks the party as well! Pinch has just dropped a new track with the vocals of Yolanda which I've dispensed with by playing the dub as the dirty tribal dubstep rhythm doesn't really need any help. The King Midas Sound album is on it's way this month so I give you a little taste with a great vocal track called Earth A Kill You. Look out for the album it's a really diverse bassline offering. Scuba can always be relied on to deliver some bassline deepness and with his new EP on Hot Flush he's done just that with some nice tempo variations as well. I close the show with another of my Womex discoveries in the form of the Basque group Oreka TX who are single handedly reviving the old traditional regional instrument, the Xtalaparta - a great sounding wooden percussion instrument a bit like an oversized vibes played with wooden circular blocks rather than mallets - check it! Kouyate & Neerman - Niokome (No Format) Jazz Chronicles - One For Joe (Futuristica) Portformat - Life Water feat Thesauras Rex (Tokyo Dawn Promo) Robert Strauss - Love & Self Respect feat Leroy Burgess (BBE promo) Kylie Auldist - In A Week, In A Day, Ashley Beedle Streetsoul Edit (Tru-Thoughts promo) MC Jean Gab'1 & Tony Allen - E Nan Mian Nuku (Crammed Discs) El Rego Et Ses Commandos - E Nan Mian Nuku (Soundway Records) Debruit - Nigerian What? (Civil Music promo) Pinch - Get Up Dub (Tectonic promo) Kind Midas Sound - Earth A Kill You (Hyperdub promo) Scuba - Ice Tx (Hot Flush promo) Oreka TX - Ice Tx (World Village) Check out another Cacique'97 track from their album and it's nice little video here:

Rejoice, all the albums Fela Kuti ever recorded are being re-issued by Knitting Factory records and let's face it you can't have enough Fela so to celebrate I play the whole 11 minutes of Water Get No Enemy one of my favourite Fela tracks. King Cannibal has finally released his album on Ninja Tune, a multi-genre specialist he revels in perverting accepted notions of genres and twisting them in his own image, usually taking them to darker realms - watch out for him, this is just the start. On another Afrobeat tip Jimi Tenor has teamed up with Tony Allen and they've brought out the best in each other, Allen reveling in the deeper Avant-Garde world of the maverick Tenor and the deeper jazz flavours - this album is the best of Tony Allens many projects this year. Percussion master Trilok Gurtu is always doing something interesting and I'm particularly liking the Indian Middle Eastern fusion of Dive In. Lloyd Miller is an amazing jazz ethnologist and his constant experimentation with jazz and Eastern styles is being celebrated by a wonderfully selected Jazzman compilation. I had to drop another Reason or Romanza track from their forthcoming Civil Music EP, they really are that good and the same with Trus'me as I give you another taste of his new album on Fat City Records which segues perfectly into a slice of new old style house music courtesy of SE62. Boddhi Satva has given George Levin the remix he needed and turned his soulful vocal track The Better Life into an excellent slice of deep deep afrocentric house music. A Mountain Of One are producing some great balearic prog/kraut rock cosmic mash up type of stuff and I'm particularly liking the Sky Is Folding from their recent album. To finish the show I had to drop a track from the latest Matthew Halsall album another great slice of modern jazz from this Manchester youngster who is punching well above his years with both his music and the fact he is self releasing his music on his own excellent Gondwana label which he is also using as a vehicle for some other excellent British players notably Nat Birchall and his amazing recent spiritual jazz album Fela Kuti - Water No Get Enemy (Knitting Factory Records promo) King Cannibal - Virgo feat Face-A-Face (Ninja Tune) Jimi Tenor/Tony Allen - Ceila's Walk (Strut promo) Trilok Gurtu - Dive In Lloyd Miller - Hue Wail (Jazzman Records) Reason or Romanza - Seven Uses Of Difference (Civil Music promo) Trus'me - Pretend (Fat City promo) SE62 - Wall Ride, Eddie C rmx (Home Taping Is Killing Music promo) George Levin - The Better Life ft Clara Hill, Boddhi Satva Ancelstral Soul rmx (BBE promo) A Mountain Of One - Sky Is Folding ( Matthew Halsall - Colour Yes (Gondwana promo) Check Lloyd Miller live back in the day:

The Life Force Trio start procedings this week with a great slice of musical spirituality which was taken from the excellent Echo Expansion records compilation featuring a roster of 'who's who' and 'who's about to be'in the world of quality underground leftfield music. I then steal a Milt Jackson track from a possibly even better compilation, Peter Kruder's Private Collection one of the nicest selections I've heard in a while - essential purchase and the Portico Quartet have been given a great sympathetic dubstep remix from Sbtrk who beefs up the bottom end but keeps the musicality, great job. Eskmo goes to show that not all dubstep comes from small bedrooms in South London as Planet Mu kindly showcase this great producer from San Francisco and Gang Gang Dance are given a nice remix by Dj Rupture and Matt Shadatek which has been lifted from their new mix CD - Solar Life Raft. Civil Music have come up trumps again with Reason or Romanza who are about to release their EP full of great original tracks and some excellent remixes - watch out for these boys and always keep an eye on what Civil Music are putting out. Chickenwing All Stars are a South London reggae dub collective under the leadership of Anderson and Craig Tamlin, percussionist with Anthony Joseph & the Spasm band and their debut is a nice deep reggae cover of the classic Gary Bartz track Celestial Blues. Lambent is a hot Japanese producer now resident in Berlin who has just released an album of his mellower offerings on the always interesting Project Moon Circle and Eglo come through yet again this time courtesy of progressive soul boy Funkineven and a great slice of future boogie feat Fatima. Happy Days - Trus'me is back with a new album after his acclaimed debut and you wont be disapointed, just wait till you hear it and look out for some great guests as well. Moonstar is still whacking out the fresh jazz beats in his inimitable style this time with the help of some crazy keys from Tony Ezzy and there's a great compilation coming out on Tirk of some of Greg Wilson's finest edits - you know that's essential. Keeping on the compilation tip, the disco compilation kings BBE are coming through soon with a DJ Spinna compiled disco selection and the Jan Leslie Holmes track is just a taster of the aural delights to come. The Life Force Trio - Alice! Live At The Natural History Museum (Porter Records) Milt Jackson With The Ray Brown Big Band - Enchanted Lady (G-Stone) Portico Quartet - Lines, Sbtrk More Hang Mix (Real World Records promo) Eskmo - Let Them Sing (Planet Mu Promo) Gang Gang Dance - Bebey, DJ Rupture & Matt Shadatek rmx (The Agriculture Promo) Reason or Romanza - Two Times Three Times (Civil Music promo) Chickenwing All Stars - Celestial Bingi, Find Yourself version (Heavenly Sweetness) Lambent - After All (Project Moon Circle) Funkineven 1956 - Kleer feat Fatima (Eglo promo) Trus'me - Put It On Me (Fat City promo) Moonstar - Laham Baagine feat Tony Ezzy (PTR promo) Klein & MBO - Dirty Talk, Greg Wilson edit (Tirk promo) Jan Leslie Holmes - I'm Your Superman (BBE promo) Reason or Romanza also do a nice line in videos as well as great music - check it:

Kicking off this week with some deep dub techno hybrid late night lushness courtesy of Rooflight, a promising talent if ever there was one. Tony Allen drops a raw percussive, surprisingly non Afrobeat, gem and Gamal Goma show that it's not just the Africans who do amazing percussion. Mordant Music provide a slice of mesmerising, leftfield, boundary pushing house music that you wouldn't know which section of the record shop to put it in. The forthcoming Ogris Debris ep is so good that I drop the original late night floor destroying cut after dropping the more cerebral Dorian Concept mix last week. Troy and Shea Soul show that UK Funky can be well produced and super soulful and I also drop another track from the excellent new Paten Locke album, just how hip hop should be sounding. DJ Devastate provides another slice of deep lazy jazzy hip hop taken from his excellent forthcoming album on BBE Records, all you beat heads looking for some chilled beats watch out for that one. To be honest I'm having trouble telling a lot of the Dam Funk tracks apart, as much as I like his sound but he's hit 'kick back with your girl' gold with the super mellow 10 West, pure easyness. The new Impossible Ark compilation of jazz covers is a wonderful thing as The Fiction Trio tune ably demonstrates, France's finest Afrobeat boys Fanga come up trumps yet again as do the ever excellent Soundway boys as I play a track from their incredible Panama II compilation - look out for Volum 3 coming soon, you know it's going to be essential.. Rooflight - In Your Hands (Styrax) Tony Allen - Gbedu (Honest Jons) Gamal Goma - Shara Saidi (Pirhana) Mordant Music - Symptoms, Version (Mordant Music) Ogris Debris - Raid The Itch (Compost Black Promo) Troy and Shea Soul - Fools Gold (Broadcite Promo) Paten Locke - Just Me (Tres Records) DJ Devastate - Don't Stop (Tres Records) Dam Funk - 10 West (Stonesthrow) The Fiction Trio - Haitian Fight Song (Impossible Ark) Fanga - Ni I Ma Toro (World Music Network) Chilo Pitty - Piculina (Soundway Records) Check a bit of the multi talented Paten Locke below, some proper hip hop in these troubled times for the genre.

Not a show this week for people with attention defecit disorder as I cut down the track count and get into some longer grooves kicking off with a slice of new tango with an electronic jazzy twist from UK outfit Tango Siempre. Grackle have been one of my discoveries of the week and I'm liking the mish mash of styles from this US duo, friends since childhood. Nancy Elisabeth is producing a fine blend of folktronica from her Manchester base and Virgil Howe is a talented multi-instrumentalist who is making interesting music as befits the son of a member of prog rock outfit Yes. Julien Dyne is a hot new producer coming through with a deep blend of soul and jazz inspired beats and probably the best thing to come out of New Zealand since The Lord Of The Rings, look out for his album on BBE coming out this autumn. Floating Points has just released a great EP on his own Eglo imprint and is finishing off the year how he started it - STRONG. Zwicker is a Swiss based deep house bod and the John Talabot remix has taken his 'Oddity' track into wonderful deep disco house territory. The Revenge are just about to release some singles influenced by some of the classic sounds of years gone by aptly summed up by the title 'Forever In Their Debt'. The Bulgarian public voted for some of their favourite pop songs in a big public contest and the winners, in a fit of inter country collaboration, were given to some UK producers to remix. I don't know what they were expecting but Ramadanman has chopped up the catchily titled 'A Nie Dvamata S Bobi Piem Kafe' track from ska popsters Wickeda into an amazing broken percussive dubstep joint - tune! Still on the dubstep track I also throw in another more techno inspired cut from the new 2562 album and then finish with some Cuban inspired Congolese Rumba from Papa Noel just to give you a little warm feeling on these cooler autumnal nights. Tango Siempre - Triphop & Fugue (Rough Guide promo) Grackle - We Are It (Supersoul) Nancy Elizabeth - Feet Of Courage (Leaf Recordings) Virgil Howe - Someday (3 Bar Fire promo) Julien Dyne - Fallin' Down ft Parks (BBE promo) Floating Points - Argonaut (Eglo) Zwicker - Oddity, John Talabot Dub (Compost Black promo) The Revenge - Forever In Their Debt, Red Rack'em Remix (White) Wickeda - A Nie Dvamata S Bobi Piem Kafe, Ramadanman Refix (White) 2562 - Love In Outer Space (Techtonic) Papa Noel - Kin Havane (Tumi Music) Here's a little video taster of Julien Dyne live in session with some mates at The Red Bull Academy in Auckland - I'm telling you LOOK out for this boy!

A great mixture of electronic experimentalism and soul music this week, kicking off with a great Japanese talent, Yosi Korikawa, a sound designer who likes mixing up the sound of the world with some great beats. The mysterious AFMB come up with a great house remix of the Maze classic 'Sunshine and Rain' and I pull out some old school Philly goodness with Executive Suite. The latest Dillanthology is about to drop and is another well compiled retrospective look at the mans work. N'Dambi, one of my favourite nu-soul artists from the last few years, is about to drop a new album on the resurrected Stax records and it's sounding nice. I had to drop more vintage Estonian jazz pop folk fusion from Collage, the album really is that good. New York post garage soulful electronic fiddler, Falty DL, is coming through with a new ep on Planet Mu and 'Must Sustain' is a great slice of future electronic soul. Red Snapper return a recent favour and remix the mighty Robert Logan in their dark electronic jazzy style and The Eerier Child come through with my favourite track from the interesting new forward thinking Mindtricks/Redrum compilation Frequencies Of The Mind. Fink is still putting out some remixes of his recent album and his Sideshow alter ego beefs up the bass to great dubby effect on his rework of Dub It All. Architeq is another of the seemingly endless supply of promising UK electronic producers and I play a track from his great debut album available soon on Tirk recordings. I'm liking The Baker Brothers reworking of the Steve Winwood classic 'Fly Like An Eagle', mainly because I'm a sucker for the original and Bei Bei and Shawn Lee have come up with an outstanding version of Billy Paul's 'East' and I'm looking forward to hearing what their forthcoming album is like. Yosi Korikawa - Painting (Eklektic promo) AFMB - Here & There (White) Executive Suite - When It Comes To Loving Me (BBE test) J Dilla - Crushin (Rapster promo) N'Dambi - Can't Hardly Wait (Stax promo) Collage - Memme Vaev (Wool Recordings promo) Falty DL - Must Sustain (Planet Mu promo) Robert Logan - Accurate Spit Boy, Red Snapper rmx (Slowfoot promo) The Eerier Child - Into The Sun (Mindtrick/Red Rum) Fink - Dub It All, Sideshow rmx (Ninja Tune promo) Architeq - Birds of Prey (Tirk promo) The Baker Brothers - Fly Like An Eagle (Freestyle Records) Bei Bei and Shawn Lee - East (Ubiquity Promo)

Back to normality, familiar studios and better sound quality this week kicking off with wonderful singer song writer Jeb Loy Nichols and possibly my favourite track from his new album on Impossible Ark. The Portico Quartet are back with a new album soon to come and a new record label, if you liked their previous outing you wont be disappointed. Collage are being re-issued and their album is a great quirky mixture of late 60's Estonian folk, jazz and pop, check it - I think you'll like it, it's better than my poor description! Mr. Thing is returning with his new installment of Strange Breaks and Mr. Thing rare breaks compilation on BBE chock full of great sounding soul and funk that I never knew existed - good work. Aardvark is about to unleash his latest album on the ever interesting Eat Concrete records and the Kronos Quartet have released their 40th album (spread over 30 years!) of string led adventures and it's a wonderful thing. Anti Pop Consortium are coming out of their self imposed 6 year solo project time out and have a new offering on Big Dada and The incredible Funk League have enlisted the Large Professor for some great golden age hip hop vibes. Raz Ohara and The Odd Orchestra win the best name of the week award and have just released a great quirky jazz flavoured eclectic electronic album which is well worth a listen and Kelpe has produced one of the best album of beats you'll hear this year, familiar but avoiding the cliches and coming through with his own flavour, I like it alot. Dancer vs Politician are some sensitive Anglo German folksters who are sounding nice and one of my favourite mixtape DJs ever Ruckus Roboticus has just given LA based Electro Hopsters LMFAO a great Latin makeover - BIG party tune. Edu K has done wonders remixing Daniel Haaksman, minimal forro is now officially the future of dance music. Point B wraps up the show with an atmospheric dubstep corker from his new album on Combat Recordings. Jeb Loy Nichols - Probably Never Stop (Tru Thoughts) Portico Quartet - Dawn Patrol (Real World promo) Collage - Halb Sirp (Wool Recordings promo) Frank Pleyer Big Band - Sally (BBE promo) Dick Walter - Spooky Doo (BBE promo) Aardvarck - idlunt (Eat Concrete promo) Kronos Quartet - Tashweesh, Interference (Nonesuch Records) Anti-Pop Consortium - New Jack Exterminator (Big Dada promo) The Incredible Funk League feat Large Professor - Through Good and Bad (Favorite promo) Raz Ohara & The Odd Orchestra - Varsha (Physical promo) Kelpe - After Gold (DC Recordings promo) Dancer vs Politician - Die Fantastischen Vier (Mono Music Records promo) LMFAO - I'm In Miami Bitch, Ruckus Roboticus Remix (White) Daniel Haaksman - Kid Conga feat MC Miltinho & Edu K, Mininal Forro rmx (Man Recordings promo) Point B - To Follow You (Combat Recordings promo) Here's a quick look at the ever adventurous Kronos Quartet getting all 'Purple Haze' with their strings:

Back on the airwaves after a weeks break due to other commitments and broadcasting from the Planet Radio studio down in Tenerife whilst on a little break. It's always a bit of a weird one though working in a new studio with a whole host of new equipment and being thrown in at the deep end with no engineer but at least the music is still good even if the presenting is a little shaky as I'm trying to work out what to slide or press! Kicking off this week with a trio of Big Dada releases. After the Speech Debelle Mercury prize win they are hotter than hot and certainly not resting on their laurels with a whole host of great releases in the pipeline. The reclusive DSL has given Boozou Bajou their hottest remix by far and I can only wish he was a bit more active! Bonobo is about to drop his latest album, check a great little remix from the first single from the project. Nailah is a hot new vocal talent from the West Coast of the states with a great voice, expect big things from her. Keeping it jazzy i also drop another spiritual jazz work from the great Dutch crew, Kindred Spirits Ensemble and some fresh dancefloor jazz from the Milano Jazz Dance Combo. Al Kent is a modern day disco don right up there with Joey Negro and his new Disco Sex track is a dancefloor bomb. Drumpoet Community carry on their deep house mission with a great Alex Dallas and Ron Shiller compiled EP, essential house music. Subeena is a hot new talent and it's always nice to hear the girls doing it. Her forthcoming EP on Planet Mu is a killer and the inclusion of Jaimie Woon on vocals and Om'mas Keith on keys is a new generation dream team. Pinch and Rudey Lee's 'One Blood' gets a wicked Distance remix for all you dubstep lovers. Paul White's new limited 7" is a great slice of 'hip rockdelica' and Captain Planet is a New York producer with a love for all things soulful afro and latin and a mission to add his twist on the genres.. Another episode this week pushing the global side of my musical world, kicking off with an incredible track from 3 oud playing Palestinian brothers otherwise known as Le Trio Joubran, amazing. The mysterious Clutchy Hopkins follows with one of his dubbier creations closely followed by a killer rework of Soldier, my favourite track from Vadim's recent album. Keeping it urban I then drop my hip hop track of the year without a doubt, K'naan's, America - the maddest break of the year and some Somalian lyrical flavour - just BRILLIANT. Gangbe Brass Band are from Benin and mixing the local rhythms with some nice soul jazz touches and putting most of the recent brass band efforts in Europe to shame. Manteca was an old school Cuban percussionist and also a comedian and his Abacua track is a great example of original drum and bass. I couldn't resist dropping The Sausage a cheeky calypso track from the well named Baldhead Growler(what was his mum thinking) that makes me crack me up every time I hear it, full of great, none too subtle double entendres. My recent fascination with the Congolese legend Franco continues, so check another track from the excellent Stern's compilation (which includes great sleeve notes). Brownout are another Grupo Fantasmo offshoot exploring the scuzzier more phychedelic side of latin funk, look out for the album soon. After last weeks little global vocal showcase I highlight a couple more amazing vocalists - the African flamenco soul jazz sound of Buika and the Portugese/Cape Verdean sweetness of Sarah Tavares. I'd forgotten about my Max Richter albums until I got sent a great new compilation exploring the collision of the classical and electronic worlds compiled by Me Raabenstein - a really interesting listen, as you would expect. Taken by Trees is a great new Swedish Global Folk Poptronica project and Lusine is coming through with some great new atmospheric cinematic beats from his Seattle home. I finished the show with a Les McCann penned jazz dance classic from Anita Moore forthecoming on BBE sometime this year. Le Trio Joubran - Masar (Randana) Clutchy Hopkins - Lord Kenji (Ubiquity) DJ Vadim - Solidier, UK Flex rmx (BBE promo) K'Naan - America (Octone) Gangbe Brass Band - Yonnatche (Contre Jour) Manteca - Abacua (Nascente) Baldhead Growler - The Sausage (Trojan) Franco et le T.P. OK Jazz - Kinsiona (Sterns) Brownout - Framed By Deats (Six Degrees promo) Buika - La Nina De Fuego (Warner) Sara Tavares - So Imgagina (World Connection) Max Richter - Arboretum (Universal) Taken By Trees - To Lose Someone (Rough Trade promo) Lusine - Baffle (Ghostly International promo) Anita Moore and the TSU Jazz Ensemble - Compared To What (BBE Test) If you want to know a bit more about Buika and I suggest so(!), then check the video below:

There's a really nice global flavour in this weeks show as I catch up on some world music album buying which tends to go through phases rather than be constant. Kicking off with more Dub Colossus and some wonderful jazzy Ethiopian dub closely followed by a second play for Joker's dubstep rework of Bristol's funky rockers, The Heavy. Tres Records keep up the independent hip hop pressure with another great release and hot new Tru-Thoughts signing Stonephace gives Kinny a little drum and bass rework. I give you another slice of unreleased Kinnego Flux and a some Caribbean soul and funk from the re-energised Strut Records. Soul Jazz records can always be relied on to release well thought out compilations and Brazil 70 their collection of post Tropicalia Brasilian artists is no exception, check the Erasmo Carlos track. Keeping it Brasilian I also drop a track from the excellent Beto Villares album which explores his interest in all aspects of his countries rich musical diversity. Lura is one of the new generation of singers from Cape Verde building on the exposure of the islands music created by the success of Cesaria Evora. Rokia Traore isn't news to most world music fans but to anyone who hasn't explored the music of Africa and Mali in particular she has quite simply got one of the best voices in the world. Peter Fish was better known for his work in tv and film music in New York in the 70's but he also found time to record some great jazz which you can now listen to courtesy of the great re-issue series from Kindred Spirits. Linkwood has slowly been making a name for himself amongst the lovers of the deeper side of house music and is about to release a great album full of boogie, disco, electro, dub and house flavours on the pleasingly reliable Prime Numbers label. On the Tears tracks that I played from him I am happy to report a rare appearance from Reggie Watts on vocals a great vocal talent and full time comedian! Finishing the show is SelfSays a young but promising MC talent from the UK riding a neat little Bullion produced beat. Dub Colossus - Negus Dub (Real World) The Heavy - How You Like Me Now, Joker remix (Ninja Tune Promo) CO$$ & Fonetic Simbol - La's Best (Tres promo) Kinny - Afro Forest Love, Stonephace Remix (Tru-Thoughts promo) Kinnego Flux - Lend Us A Tender (Unreleased) Joblonski And The Randy's Allstars - Soul Makossa (Strut Records) Amral's Trinidad Cavaliers Steel Orchestra - 90% Of Me Is You (Strut Records) Erasmo Carlos - Mane Jaoo (Soul Jazz Records) Beto Villares - Santo Negro (Six Degrees Records) Lura - Um Dia (LusAfrica) Rokia Traore - Dianfa (Nonesuch) Peter Fish - Friend And Lover (Kindred Spirits) Linkwood - Tears (Prime Numbers promo) SelfSays - Same Space (Unreased) I've been checking the new book 'From Jazz Funk & Fusion To Acid Jazz - The History of The UK Jazz Dance Scene' by Mark 'Snowboy' Cotgrove this week and can't recommend it highly enough for anyone with an interest in the scene, the music or dance in general. It also offers a fascinating insight into an important period for the development of black music in the UK and is chock full of interesting interviews with all of the major players in the scene - great work. It's also inspired me to check out some old jazz dance footage, here's a little taste:

An amazing amount of new music has just come my way and it's my pleasure to start sharing it with you. Kicking off with a fantastic South African musical export Tumi & The Volume, a great new hip hop project with it's influences more in Afro America than Africa but none the less great stuff. Mary Anne Hobbs, queen of the electronic new school is going to be releasing her latest compilation for Planet Mu in September and I drop two tracks from this gateway into the musical future - the excellent Sunken Foal 'folktronica' project from Dublin and the majestic, atmospheric slice of UK Funky from Bristol bad boy Gemmy who actually shares a house with Appleblim and whilst making some quality beats also passes on his production knowledge through his teaching job. Lobisomem hails from Chicago and is making great uncategorizable (easier to spell than say - just listen to this weeks show!) music, he also runs an excellent blog, with great mixes from the cream of the Chicago musical underground. I also played another track from The Brave New World Of Bernard Fevre and expect more tastes in the coming weeks. Crown City Rockers are a funky fresh five piece hip hop crew from Oakland, check them if you despair at what is classed as hip hop these days, ditto Shafiq Husayn, one third of the boundary pushing Sa Ra Creative Partners crew. David Baxter is back with some new solo efforts and collaborations, look out for this great young talent from Belfast under his Filaria moniker or with his Kinnego Flux team efforts. My favourite Afro Peruvian electronic fusionists, NovaLima, have just had their last album remixed and the Da Lata rerub is probably the pick of the bunch and I give you a taste of the new Fat Freddy's Drop album another slice of down under (depending on your gps co-ordinates) reggaefied soulful goodness. Culture Musical Club are taking East Africa`s Arabian musical heritage, adding Swahili lyrics and a good percussive Afro twist to produce some great culture clash musical goodness and I finish off the show with some great old time gems. Nigerian guitarist Victor Coker comes through with some old time hi-life, Alerth Bedasse & Ivan Chin provide a little Mento gem and Slim Smith shows some of those Jamaican boys sure have soul. Tumi And The Volume - Johnny Dyani (Mr. Bongo promo) Sunken Foal - Of Low Count and Light Pocket (Planet Mu promo) Lobisomem - Plasma Is For Lovers (Tall Corn Music promo) Bernard Fevre - Stay On Grey (Lo Recordings promo) Crown City Rockers - Soul (Gold Dust Media Promo) Shafiq Husayn - Nirvana (Plug Research/Rapster promo) David Baxter - Hare's Gap (Unreleased) Gemmy - Rainbow Road (Planet Mu promo) Lady Chann & Sticky - Sticky Situation (Free Fabric download) Novalima - Tumbala, Da Lata remix (Cumbancha Records) Kinnego Flux & Defcon - Unravel feat Def Con (Unreleased) Fat Freddy's Drop - Pull The Catch (The Drop promo) Culture Musical Club - Muziki Ni Kazi Yetu (World Village) Victor Coker - Ilu Oyinbo Dara (Honest Jons) Alerth Bedasse & Chin?s Calypso Sextet - Guzoo Doctor (Pressure Sounds) Slim Smith - I Need Your Loving (Jah Slams) Any regular followers to my musings will know about my developing sand art fetish, well I've found the best example so far a truly moving mixture of sand art, story telling, history and music plus the artist is good looking enough for me to forgive her rather overly dramatic theatrics and the fact the clip is from the tv program Ukraine's Got Talent!!

No time for roasting my flesh in the sun as the radio show rolls on into the summer. Not so many releases at this time of year but I've been receiving plenty of good promos from projects that will be released once everyone gets their lazy arses back to work in September and onwards. The Phantogram album is coming on BBE and sees a bit of a departure for the label with this mixture of shoegaze, pop, electronica underpinned by some great drums, often hip hop flavoured - a really unique sound, make sure you check it. The Strange New World of Bernard Fevre is without doubt one the albums of the year and definitely the most mysterious. Red Snapper are back and have created a dream team by asking Robert Logan for a remix and Oblong has created a majestic slice of pop flavoured house music which by rights should be ripping up every sunny dancefloor this summer. I also dig out a classic slice of Malik Alston. One of the unsung Detroit heroes he has worked with the likes of Dwele, Slum Village and Recloose - hear why here. The Kindred Spirits Ensemble are part of a new wave of spiritual jazz warriors alongside Nat Birchall and Finn Peters and are about to release a welcome album of covers bringing back to life some of the genres classic tracks. The Radek Azul Band are a great new soul jazz outfit coming out of France and promising big things. Mr. Bongo have picked up the Jose Conde Y Ola Fresca album for release later this year and it's a real mix of Latin rhythms, great tropical fusion as befitting a group from the New York cultural melting pot. Comfort Fit have come through with a really interesting album of experimental beats and varied vocal styles even including Mr. Nice, Howard Marks! The Herbaliser band are dropping their second album and Wah-Chu-Ku is gracing Drumpoet Community with some great future beats. Phantogram - 10,000 Claps (BBE promo) Bernard Fevre - Dali (Lo Recordings promo) Red Snapper - Deathroll, Robert Logan remix (Lo Recordings) Natural Self - The Origin (Tru-thoughts promo) Oblong - Playing On My Mind (Exceptional Records) Malik Alston - Butterfly (Third Ear) Kindred Spirits Ensemble - Ja-Mil (Kindred Spirits promo) Chynna Blue and Radek Azul Band - Give You All (Q-Sounds promo) Jose Conde Y Ola Fresca - Descarga Inez, Old School Cuban Jam Session (Mr. Bongo promo) Zion Train - Why, Alambic Conspiracy rmx (Universal Egg promo) Comfort Fit - Rendevous, Dub (Tokyo Dawn Records promo) The Herbaliser Band - Blackwater Drive (K7 Records promo) Wah-Chu-Ku - Flowin' (Drumpoet Community promo)

Here we go again. Kicking off this week with pop hero (albeit with a touch of soul) Jack Penate and a great quirky beatless remix of 'Tonight's Today'. Ezekiel Honig supplies a slice of his trademark warm acoustic electronica before I launch into a future Balearic classic from DJ Hell's recent album, co produced by Peter Kruder (more on him later) amongst others. Rhythm Of Elements continue a string of great releases on R2 this year with a great piece of jazz flavoured house, replete with Japanese scatting, now you don't hear that everyday. Peter Kruder marks the 50th release of the excellent Compost Black house label with an an amazing piece of deep electronic but super soulful house music and Faze Action provide some of their increasingly trademark disco deepness. Dub Colossus has been one of my favourite projects of the year so far and Colombia's Sidestepper gives this Ethiopian reggae project a further global fusion twist - wonderful. Lynx & Kemo have produced possibly the best conceptual drum and bass album of all time and I drop this great bassline ethno inspired percussive track from their album, although it's about as far removed from most peoples perception of drum as bass as you can get. There is a great new compilation on Freestyle of Cuban Funk compiled by Tom Wieland and the Orquesta Riverside track is just one of the many great tracks on the album. If you don't know Tom Wieland he is a deep deep digger so expect a great original selection of previously obscure gems. I've only just stumbled across Dollboy and wanted to share this great new folktronica find from this ex-bigbeat producer. DJ Day & Miles Bonny are just about to release an EP of Raphael Saadiq covers and I'm loving their interpretation of Skyy, Can You Feel Me, although with such great source material you can't go too far wrong. Robert Glasper is about to drop his new album and this hip hop inspired jazzer has enlisted Bilal amongst others on the project. Finally I end up with deep jazz beats by Venetian Snares which I meant to play last week but somehow overlooked - the joys of one take, live radio :) Jack Penate - Tonight's Today, Julianna Barwick rmx (XL) Ezekiel Honig - Broken Marching Band (Anticipate) DJ Hell - The Angst (International Gigolo) Rhythm Of Elements - Praia (R2 Records) Peter Kruder - After The Dawn (Compost Black promo) Faze Action - Starship (Faze Action Records) Dub Colossus - Black Rose, Sidestepper remix (Real World records) Lynx & Kemo - Tribes (Soul:R) Orquesta Riverside - En Casa Del Trompo No Bailes (Freestyle) Dollboy - California (Static Caravan Recordings) DJ Day & Miles Bonny - Skyy Can You Feel Me (MPM promo) Robert Glasper - All Matter ft Bilal (Blue Note promo) Venetian Snares - This Bitter Earth (Addict Records)

It's funny how some shows just seem to come together with a bit of a theme and this weeks could loosely be described as 'bass line atmospherics'. I kicked off this week with a track from the epic Moritz Von Oswald Trio release on Honest Jons - amazing stuff from Mr. Oswald, Vladislav Delay and Max Loderbauer - 4 tracks and 45 minutes of deep percussive afro leaning dubbed out techno flavour. Clubroot is an ex drum and bass producer turned dubstep don and his latest album is laden with bottom heavy haunting soundscapes. Mount Kimbie are another outfit taking dubstep in brave new directions and I am loving the Vertical track from their recent ep. The Heavy are a bunch of Bristol funk rockers (terrible description) and Joker has brought their sound into the dubstep arena in wonderful style. Prince Fatty are the best reggae group you have probably never heard of but this year could be their year and this ODB cover should at least give them exposure on all good party dance floors over the warmer months. It somehow took me 3 years to hear about Root 70 and their jazz take on Burnt Friedman so this week, better late than never, is a great slice of left leaning jazzy reggae from them. Ricky Tick have been one of the most consistent jazz labels of the last few years and their forthcoming single from Timo Lassy featuring Jose James is going to do that reputation no harm whatsoever. Impossible Ark will be releasing one of this years finest compilations and The Rhythmatic Orchestra's take on African Mailman is just a little taster of the musical joys to come. Tres Records, home of consistently good independent hip hop, are 5 years old this summer and have just released a great compilation to celebrate, check out the rising star of Paten Locke. Sarah Linares drops a quality slice of forward thinking soul music and Blue Daisy drop their eagerly awaited single of lo-fi, hazy crazy, forward thinking beats. Young David is a young house inclined producer I've had my eyes on for a while and this new track from him is a great slice of slo-mo cosmic/balearic goodness. As if Floating Points hadn't done his reputation enough good this year I finish the show with KG Beat, another stellar production with a hint of Mark Princhard's infamous Carambola remix, this time on Planet Mu. Moritz Von Oswald Trio - Pattern 3 (Honest Jons) Clubroot - Low Pressure Zone (Lo Dubs) Mount Kimbie - Vertical (Hot Flush) The Heavy - How You Like Me Now, Joker remix (Counter Records promo) Prince Fatty - Shimmy Shimmy Ya (Mr. Bongo) Root 70 - Get Things Straight, instrumental (Nonplace) Timo Lassy - The More I Look At You feat Jose James (Ricky Tick promo) The Rhythmatic Orchestra - African Mailman (Impossible Ark promo) Paten Locke - Funky Hit Record (Tres Records) Sarah Linares - It's All True (Public Transit Records promo) Blue Daisy - Fall (Black Acre Records) Yound David - Over Again (Unreleased) Floating Points - KG Beat (Planet Mu)

Kicking off this week with a track from my favourite Balkan obsessed producer Dunklebunt and a nice mellow remix of global fusionists Watcha Clan before Woon gives a great melancholic twist to Olive's pop smash You're Not Alone. Discovery of the week for me is a great young jazz label hailing from Manchester, called Gondwana. Two albums strong they are shaping up to be one of the freshest new labels to appear on the jazz scene for a while and Nat Birchall's new album in particular has been on repeat and flooding my living rooms with spiritual vibes all week, great stuff. I had to drop some more tracks from a couple of great albums of recent note. Check out the downtempo side of the versatile Karizma and more beautiful Angolan 60s/70s pop from the excellent new project on Out Here Records, Comfusoes 1. Stones Throw can usually be relied on to hold down the quality and Dam-Funk is doing just that with his synth funk soul killer, 'On and On'. Cessa is a great sounding new project from a couple of mystery producers but there is no mystery about the quality of the music, great bassline, techno fusions - look out for the ep, highly recommended. The boss of one of the homes of avant-garde electronica, No Nine has just released his last album and here is my favourite track from it, the wonderfully titled, 'Chimps in Space Part I and II'. Terror Danjah is showing his versatitlity with a new release on Planet Mu, due soon and I've picked up on the soulful synths of Zumpi Hunter. Rather randomly I then threw in a couple of recent global discoveries with Franco & Le Tout Puissant OK Jazz. Franco was one of the most prolific and influential African musicians ever having recorded literally thousands of tracks and here he gives us his take on the sound of Cuba as does the following track from Rhany but in his own inimitable North African way. Just to randomise this weeks show even more I then finsish off with a great quirky disco style cut up from Labulo due out soon on Eklektik. Wathca Clan - Ch ilet Yani, Dunkelunt Remix (Piranha) Woon - You're Not Alone (Tru-Thoughts promo) Nat Birchall - Many Blessings (Gondwana Records) Matthew Halsall - Sending My Love (Gondwana Records) Mauricio Pacheco - Anglole (Out Here Records) Karizma - If You Don't Know (R2 Records) Dam-Funk - On and On (Stones Throw promo) Fulgeance - Smartbanging (One Handed Records) Cessa - Movement (White label) Me Raabenstein - Chimps in Space Part I and II (No Nine) Terror Danjah - Zumpi Hunter, Swindle Remix (Plant Mu promo) Franco & Le Tout Puissant OK Jazz - Tcha Tcha Tcha De Mi Amor (Sterns) Rhany - Chan Chan (World Music Network) Labulo - Don't Be (Eklektic promo) Couldn't resist droppin in another sand art video which rather handily has a Matthew Halsall soundtrack

No musings this week on the show due to the fact I was away in the Pyrenees this weekend on a little holiday so you've just got the track listing and links for you to do your own investigation, I'll be back to a more verbose state next week. Joe Lovano starts the show this week on a nice deep leftfield jazz vibe - the best track from his new album on Blue Note. Obba Supa is about to release his new album on the always interesting Project Moon Circle label - gritty and intelligent tales of UK inner city life riding some quality jazz beats. Shafiq from Sa Ra is dropping his solo album in September (those Sa Ra boys are ubiquitous this year) and you can hear a little taster this week. Another album forthcoming is from George Levin, best known for his killer souful house cuts a while back, shows his versatility with a nice building nu-soul cut and is a wicked little taster of the album due later this year on BBE. Amede and The Soundsmith is yet another of the new young beat producers that I love to showcase on the show, 19 years old and a big talent with a bright future ahead. Bretzel Zoo is the bastard beat making love child of Eat Concrete records stalwarts Herrmutt Lobby, Cupp Cave, Dalcym and Dr. Vaen. Mad programming, bass bin bashing eclecto funk at it's most twisted. Eat Concrete also have a nice line in tripped out sand artists - check the video below! 2562 returns after his acclaimed album of last year with a nice new ep on Tectonic as Ceu provide a nice mellow Brasilian counter to all the electronic madness with a sweet acoustic track from her great new album. Andy Ash is a versatile house producer and I'm loving the deep percussive soulful vibes of Going Down. New Nolder is an Lithuanian ex piano prodigy who has been lured to the electronic dark side and will be releasing a album full of disco glitch tech micro house goodness on Planet Mu shortly and I'm loving the post Herbert avant-garde house style of Lizzy Mercier Descloux on Ze. Kylie Auldist adds a bit of quality old school soulfulness to procedings and the Ragga Twins get a mentalist remix by dub step hero Ramadanman. Joe Lovano - Drum Song (Blue Note) Obba Supa - Fly On Turntable Planet Moon Circle Promo) Shafiq - lil Girl feat. Fatima (Plus Research/K7 promo) George Levin - Falling Masonary (BBE Promo) Amede & The Soundsmith - The Underground reprise (Bohemian Music promo) Bretzel Zoo - Shugaring Emrod Baywatch (Eat Concrete promo) 2562 - Love In Outer Space (Techtonic promo) Ceu - Vira - Going Down (6 Degrees promo) Andy Ash - Going Down (Universal Vibes promo) Few Nolder - Pillow (Planet Mu promo) Lizzy Mercier Descloux - Hard-Boiled Babe (Ze Records) Kylie Auldist - Ship Inside A Bottle (Tru-Thoughts promo) Ragga Twins - Spliffhead, Ramadanman rfx (Soul Jazz promo)

Kicking off this week with the title track from the interesting new Laroca album, they are still not the finished item but are bursting with ideas and heading most definitely in the right direction. This was closely followed by another track from the excellent new Quantic album which is, without doubt his finest work to-date, let's hope he stays in Colombia it's doing his music no end of good. Little brother of J.Dilla, Illa J gets his new single, laughably called a remix, but in fact completely re-invented by Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, although the original is a solid slice of nu-soul. BlackJoy comes correct with his take on Cosmic Disco using the quirky French vocals of Sandra Nkake, a future Balearic classic if there is any justice. Stevie J comes up with a post broken/Dilla hybrid for 2009 proving sometimes less is more for the ever interesting Eglo Records and Phreek Plus One drop a slice of classic instrumental disco, loving those spacey keys. Pepe Bradock rips apart the mellow vocals of Zero 7 whilst retaining the soul and upping the tempo to deliver a broken house goodie and I finally drop an AtJazz track from his album and can only apologise for the delay in doing so. I am glad to report that my favourite Afro house don, Issa Bagayogo, had just got the remix treatment for several of his recent album tracks and here I present the epic and rather good Soft Rocks remix of Filaw. Rob Tex comes up with one of the party hip hop tunes of the summer if there is any justice with his jazzy and cheeky rework of Method Man and Redman, bootlegs are rarely so good. Ouch - check the new Reso releases, essential for anyone with an interest in bass bin destroying interesting new direction in dubstep, an artist to watch for sure. In a perfect example of art responding to life comes Inja's (and in fact most of the UK's urban youths) response to the CCTV proliferation in the UK, just "wear your hat LOW, hat LOW, hat LOW", BIG tune for the summer. Mark Pritchard, always one to watch has just created a twisted dubstep monster with a little help from Om'mas Keith from Sa-Ra, who seems to be cropping up everywhere at the moment, a mad, twisted, quirky, fun floorfiller, I like it loads. Pearson Sound, a little side project of prolific and ever reliable Ramadanman, closes the show and again is a dubstep mutation this time showcasing a deeper, melodic approach to the genre and is a suitably cosmic dub ending to this weeks show. Laroca - Valley Of The Bears (Just Music) Quantic And His Combo Barbaro - The Dreaming Mind Part 1 (Tru-Thoughts Promo) Illa J - Sounds Like Love, Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson's In Space Remix (Delicious Promo) Sandra Nkaké - La Mauvaise Réputation, Blackjoy Vocal Mix (Discograph Promo) Stevie J aka FUNKINEVEN - Mad Swing! (Eglo Promo) Phreek Plus One - That's it (Compost Promo) Zero 7 - Today, Pépé Bradock Wtf Happnd Mix (BBE Records) Atjazz feat. Dawne B - Parallels, Alt. Album Version (AtJazz) Issa Bagayogo - Filaw, Soft Rocks Remix (Six Degrees) Rob Tex presents The Red Method - How High (White label) Reso - Beasts In The Basement (Civel Music Promo) Inja - Hat Low featuring Skinny Man and Fallacy, Mr. Thing remix (In Records Promo) Mark Pritchard and Om'mas Keith - Wind It Up, Freak Mix (Hyperdub promo) Pearson Sound - So Far Ago (Soul Jazz)

So the Sonar festival madness has ended, big ups to Mulatu Astake and The Heliocentrics who rocked the house despite bad sound problems - shame on you Sonar, it really was awful. Konono No 1 smashed it big style and got everyone in the hall dancing and trying their best to bust some African style moves - not a pretty site but the energy was great! Debruit did himself loads of favours by delivering a killer set of wonk funk and Bullion dropped a wonderfully eclectic dj set of future beats mixed with classic soul, jazz, latin and disco obscurities, too slow for most but it got my groove on. Respect also goes to Culoe de Song for getting me and most of the rest of the crowd into a deep pure afro house trance proving you don't need to be a headbanging 128bpm+ house mentalist to get the crowd going, it's all about the groove people not the BPMs! So to the show. Rainer Trueby is back from his post nu-jazz obscurity with a couple of wonderful house chuggers on Compost produced with Danilo from Motor City Drum Ensemble - deep, deep. The Belletunes come through with some nice retro funky newness and I drop more soulful lovelisness from the eagerly anticipated Sa Ra debut lp. Debruit is sounding like he's really coming of age with his new material which you can expect soon on the great Civil Music who are also responsible for the future beats of the hotly tipped Reso who is mashing up the dubstep dance in his own fresh sounding way. The Jega album coming on Planet Mu is sounding hot and the new Quantic And His Combo Barbaro album is by far his most accomplished effort yet and I look forward to more musical adventures utilising his new South American musical friends. The Cha Cha Shaw album re-issue on Kindred Spirits captures this old school twisted jazzer at his quirky funky best and the decision not to re-master this poorly recorded live album adds an interesting authenticity and aged charm to the re-issue. I had to finish with a little house trio, kicking off with the stellar PanOptikum remix of the little known Arabic artist Sheharzad - Detroit meets the Ayatollah. More Pepe Bradock appears courtesy of the essential new Pepe Bradock compilation on BBE and Noze provide a Ethiopian jazz/Minimal soundclash where the only winner is fresh new music for 2009. Rainer Trueby - Ayers Rock (Compost promo) Brother Jack McDuff - Oblighetto, J Dilla remix (Rapster promo) The Belletunes - Stare It Cold, Dublex Inc remix (Infracom promo) Sa Ra Creative Partners - The Bone Song (Ubiquity promo) Debruit - I'm Goin Wit You Feat Om'Mas Keith Sa-Ra Creative Partners & Jamie Woon (Civil Music promo) The Clonious - One At A Time feat Muhsinah (Affine Rec Promo) Jega - Antiphon (Planet Mu promo) Reso - Busted Crunk (Civil Music promo) Quantic And His Combo Barbaro - The Dreaming Mind Part 1 (Tru-Thoughs promo) Stanley Beckford - Sam Fi Man (Calaloo Records) Cha Cha Shaw - Melted Soul (Kindred Spirits) Sheharzard - Yalla Yalla, PanOptikum remix (Fine Art Recordings) Charles Webster - I Am Falling, Paris-Bordeaux Remix (BBE promo) Noze - Songs On The Rocks (Get Physical)

Love them or hate them, mash ups and re-edits on bootleg vinyl or free download are here to stay and I kick off the show with one of the better reggae ones courtesy of the excellent Heatwave crew from the UK, cheers boys, BIG tune. Build An Ark are back and keeping it deep and uncompromising in today's increasingly disposable music world. Sounds dodgy but it works - West Papuan tribal sounds meet dubstep with Inkling's remix of The Lani Singers and Sa Ra are back with their most accessible music to date, their album is about to drop and will be one of my summer albums for sure, oozing soul, quality beats and production. Funky DL has got together a collection of amazing UK lyrical talent on his latest track for BBE, quite an achievment to get that many stars in the same room and rising star The Clonious, only 23 and from Vienna, gives us a taste of his forthcoming album - watch out for him. You are never far away from some classic disco re-edits these days, most of them rubbish or just plain unnecessary but I dropped a couple of the better ones with the fantastic Greymatter rework of the Brit funk classic Dancing In Outer Space and a teasing rework of the soul boy classic Georgie Porgy. Show-B has crafted a MASSIVE house tune for the summer and Roy Davis Jr comes through with some deep, classic Chicago vibes from his new lp. Kicked off the show with another play of the great forthcoming King Midas Sound cut, excellent new dub adventures - I like their style, leading not following. Discovery of the weeks is Paradise Found, lovely new folktronica on the quirky and diverse Dancing Turtle records. This took me nicely into a couple of Pepe Bradock remixes which are part of a great compilation of the mans work which is about to drop on BBE. If you don't know him he's one of the few house producers with a really distinctive sound and is and was way ahead of his time, even his old stuff is sounding like music from next year - a criminally underrated production legend, just buy the compilation and pay your respects. Rising UK R&B star Cherri V comes through with an Amerie style party winner and there is some great new hip hop from Funky DL (in a Bugsy Malone style!) and New Jack Hustle - Tres Records coming up trumps again. As if there weren't enough already the Finnish produce another great jazz group on the wonderful Ricky Tick label - watch out for new kid on the block, Dalindeo. I dropped a little latin fusion trio kicking off with the great Angolan Salsa flavour of Carlitos Vieira Dias. Good to see Jazz and Milk back with the latest installment of their Jazz and Milk breaks series and I'm liking Cesars Salad's version of Manteca a lot before I finished off my Latin trio with a a great tune from the impeccable Pacifico Colombiano compilation from Otrabanda, undoubtedly one of my favourtite compilations from the past few years and right up there with the Soundway releases. Just to really mix things up I finished with a bit of flavour from the Indian sub-continent. Punjabi dons Tigerstyle produce another winner this time with the new Yugraj track and Heavenly Sweetness take a break from the leftfield jazz world to release young Nepalese flute prodigy Sunil Dev Shrestra - horizontal and enlightening in equal measures. King Midas Sound - Too Long Dub (Hyperdub promo) Paradise Found - Like Attracts Like (Dancing Turtle promo) Cesaria Evora - Angola, Bateau Ivre rework by Pepe Bradock (BBE promo) Roy Ayers - I Am Your Mind, Pépé Bradock's Asynchronous Adventures (BBE Promo) Cherri V - Til The Sun Comes Up (6060 Music) Funky DL - 1947 featuring Lei-an and Xantone Blacq (BBE promo) New Jack Hustle - Lionel (Tres Records promo) Dalindeo - Vintage Voyage (Ricky Tick Records promo) Carlitos Vieira Dias - Mukajame (Tratore) Cesars Salad - Manteca (Jazz and Milk promo) Markitos Y La Sabrosa De Buenaventura - Linda Portena (Otrabanda) Yugraj - Chan Warga Chamkara (Kamlee Records) Sunil Dev Shrestra - Improvisation 1 (Heavenly Sweetness promo)

Global SoulJah and BBE Records Radio Show - May 30, 2009.
Kicked off the show this week with some of the better recent experiments in global music. One of the heirs to Tito Puentes percussion crown, Luisito Quintero, drop his inspired version of the Ray Barreto classic, Acid. French dj and producer DJ Click gives Manu Chao's mestizo sounds a credible electronic edge, Ocote Soul Sounds take their dark, dubby, tropical vibe into Fela inspired African territory and Haaksman and Haaksman give the rumba sounds of Papawa a fierce breakbeat rerub. Sbtrkt drops a great wonky tech house track, he's on the up for 2009, look out for him. Avant-Garde sounds come courtesty of Some Freak, Andreya Triana & Ritornell and their new track The Light, whilst beat box don DJ Scratch combines interestingly with one of my favourite leftfield producers Elmore Judd on one of the tracks from his latest album. Delicate, beautiful, shoegazing electronic pop comes courtesy of Franklin. UK trumpet don Abram Wilson composes a great jazz tribute to Barack Obama and Floating Points is on a roll at the moment with another killer single about to drop, this time on Eglo - great new lazy cosmic vibes. Dam-Funk continues his quest for global synth funk domination and UK beat maker du jour Paul White is just about to release his new album on the ever reliable One Handed Music so I drop a little 3 track sample of the beat tape musical wonders to come and then remind you how good new BBE signing Phantogram are - look out for their album later in the year. Luisito Quintero - Acid (BBE Records) Manu Chao - Tombola, DJ Click rmx (White) Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada - Vampires (ESL promo) Papawa vs Haaksman & Haaksman - La Flaca (Lovemonk Records) Sbtrkt - Breakout (White) Some Freak, Andreya Triana & Ritornell - The Light (Wald Entertainment) DJ Scratch feat Elmore Judd - So Hard To Find My Way (Gold Dust Media) Franklin - Big Cities (Wool Recordings) Abram Wilson - Obama (Dune Records) Floating Points - Truly (Eglo promo) Dam-Funk - Latrifying (Stones Throw Promo) Testiculo y Uno - Deetermeter (Melting Pot Music promo) Paul White - Floating Free (One Handed Music promo) Paul White - Sugar Free Airlines (One Handed Music promo) Paul White - The Magic Tunetop (One Handed Music promo) Phantogram - Running From The Cops (BBE promo)
