Dr. Kerry Hammond, assistant professor of surgery at the Digestive Disease Center at MUSC, discusses Irritable Bowel Disease, the most common forms of which are Crohn?s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. She explains what conditions may warrant a surgical procedure (either planned or emergent) for a patient with Irritable Bowel Disease, and what studies may be conducted prior to surgery. Dr. Hammond concludes this podcast by outlining what preventative measures a patient with Ulcerative Colitis should take due to the increased risk of cancer associated with the disease.

Gastrointestinal Disease: Hemorrhoids
Dr. Kerry Hammond, assistant professor of surgery at the Digestive Disease Center at MUSC, discusses the common problem known as hemorrhoids. She describes what typically causes hemorrhoids to become a problem, and what some of the more common symptoms are. Dr. Hammond outlines a few common treatments that she recommends to patients, as well as what clinical procedures may be used if conservative management is unsuccessful. She concludes this podcast by explaining what a patient can do to minimize the risk of recurrence.

Gastrointestinal Procedures: Colon Surgery
Dr. Kerry Hammond, assistant professor of surgery at the Digestive Disease Center at MUSC, discusses colon surgery and provides common examples of why a patient may need to undergo such a procedure. She explains the advantages of a minimally invasive procedure versus open surgery, and how patient recovery times can very on an individual basis. Dr. Hammond also describes a procedure referred to as a colostomy, and concludes this podcast by explaining the importance of patient education prior to having colon surgery.

Gastrointestinal Disease: Visceral Hypersensitivity
Dr. Mark Delegge, director of the Digestive Disease Center at MUSC, discusses a syndrome referred to as Visceral Hypersensitivity. This disease tends to ?masquerade? as other digestive diseases, when it is actually the nerves surrounding the intestines interpreting normal activity within the gut as intense pain. Dr. Delegge explains that while treatment of this condition is difficult, the use of small doses of some older anti-depressants to blunt the effects of Visceral Hypersensitivity has shown some promise as a potential treatment. He concludes by explaining the importance of continuing to investigate potential treatments for this condition and improving patients? quality of life.

Gastrointestinal Procedures: Upper Endoscopy
Dr. Mark Delegge, director of the Digestive Disease Center at MUSC, discusses a common procedure known as an Upper Endoscopy. He describes what signs and indications may warrant an Upper Endoscopy, and what the typical patient experience for this procedure would be. Dr. Delegge concludes by explaining that while an Upper Endoscopy usually only takes a short amount of time, finding any abnormalities could cause the procedure to last longer.

Gastrointestinal Procedures: Balloon Enteroscopy
Dr. Mark Delegge, director of the Digestive Disease Center at MUSC, discusses a type of enteroscopy known as Balloon Enteroscopy. He describes how this procedure allows gastroenterologists to look further into the small intestine for diseases than was previously possible with a standard enteroscope. Dr. Delegge explains why this is so important for investigating problems associated with the small intestine, and how the procedure itself is performed. He concludes by emphasizing how the Digestive Disease Center is committed to evaluating new technologies and procedures to maximize the level of patient care at MUSC.

Digestive Disease Center at MUSC
Dr. Mark DeLegge, the Medical Director for the Digestive Disease Center, gives an overview of the Medical University of South Carolina?s Digestive Disease Center. The Ashley River Tower and Sustainability
