Green Side Up: Roofs Sprout Around Town
In recent weeks, we've looked at problems our rainy region has with keeping waterways free from polluted runoff. Some say that one way to steer rain out of infrastructure and away from rivers is to construct green roofs. The Allegheny Front's Kara Holsopple takes a tour of a green roof and looks at what else might be in store for the region.

Zero Waste Pittsburgh Really Cleans Up
Zero Waste Pittsburgh is a one-stop shop for recycling and waste minimization resources and assistance in Southwestern PA. Pennsylvania Resources Council's Dave Mazza joins Matthew Craig to explain how this new service can help business, institutions and special events like The Allegheny Front's own Holiday Happy Hour.

News Analysis: Pennsylvania Plans to Open State Forest Land to Deep Gas Drillers
Nearly 32,000 acres of state forest land in north-central Pennsylvania will be opened up next month to deep gas drilling. The cash-strapped state hopes to raise 60 million dollars by leasing gas rights on this land. Critics of this planned auction say it opens up more public land to environmental problems. The Allegheny Front's news analyst Ann Murray joins Jennifer Szweda Jordan to talk about the sale.

DEP Hit by State Layoffs
As a result of Pennsylvania budget cuts, several state agencies including the Department of Environmental Protection, are left with no choice but to make cuts. The Allegheny Front's Katelyn Malongowski reports.

Air Pollution at Schools
The US Environmental Protection Agency is wrapping up a 60-day initiative looking at toxic air pollution around schools, including 3 in the Pittsburgh area and 2 in eastern Pennsylvania. They're looking to gauge the health effects linked to pollution exposure. Many of the schools were chosen based on how close they were to heavy industry. Gigi Douban reports:
