| Emily Arin - The Highway Girl | The quirky Emily Arin came to me via Sonicbids and I was yet again
surprised at the wealth of truly interesting talent out there.
Hailing from Ithaca, NY. Ms. Arin is receiving praise from many at the
moment including influential WFUV mainstay and Idiot's Delight Host Vin
Scelsa.
Emily's package arrived on my doorstep with a hand-written, vintage postcard. Need I say more? I LOVE When You Knew Me When. | Get at Short URL | Download Emily Arin - The Highway Girl | Play in Popup.

| Amy Petty ~ The Highway Girl | The Highway Girl is excited to be back!! Amy Petty is our first chosen artist for the new The Highway Girl Podcast series.Amy has such an incredibly rich voice that I have to think of great singers like Joan Osborne and Ann Wilson. I literally never tire of listening to her sing.Amy's debut CD is Mystery Keeps You, produced and engineered by Jacob Detering (Bonnie Raitt), and featuring performances by R. Scott Bryan (Sheryl Crow, Peter Mayer) and Eric Grossman (KĀs Choice). You'll be wanting to own it.Buy Mystery Keeps You! | Get at Short URL | Download Amy Petty ~ The Highway Girl | Play in Popup.

| Kate Walsh - The Highway Girl | Kate Walsh was such a lovely person to sit down with. Every bit as genuine as her music leads you to believe she would be.My thanks to the Soiled Dove Underground in Denver for letting us record this there. Sound man Chris did an awesome job of recording Kate's Sound check for us to use as her live performance. They're a beautiful venue and listening room that I highly recommend if you're passing through Colorado.Buy Tim's House from Kate Walsh! | Get at Short URL | Download Kate Walsh - The Highway Girl | Play in Popup.

| Jesca Hoop - The Highway Girl | Jesca Hoop's music is incredibly authentic and so is she as a person. Although she is very quirky, I was surprised by some of her traditional values that came out when we talked.I found her to be very much in control of her career and very aware of where she wants both her music and her career to go.Don't miss Seed of Wonder at the beginning. Stewart Copeland plays drums. And don't miss Murderer of Birds at the end.Buy Kismet! | Get at Short URL | Download Jesca Hoop - The Highway Girl | Play in Popup.
| | |
| Allee Willis - The Highway Girl | Allee Willis is truly one of a kind. Born in Detroit, it seems Allee, like me, should probably have been born black. More soul than the people know what to do with. The quality of sound on this podcast is terrible. But, I beg of you to ignore that and listen to the quality of content in terms of what Allee has to say. it's really challenging to go from an audio podcast to a video podast and keep the quality the same. Trust me. We're working on it!You can help us bring the production up a notch by donating if you love the show! And you MUST watch the Bubbles & Cheesecake video Allee wrote and produced at The Highway Girl. | Get at Short URL | Download Allee Willis - The Highway Girl | Play in Popup.
| | |
| Aimee Mann - The Highway Girl | It goes without saying that I'm a huge fan of Aimee Mann's. The fact
that she's been able to remain true to herself and experience such
success as an independent artist gives me hope that any of us can do it.
Aimee wrote the music for the incredible film Magnolia a few years
back, for which she received a lot of attention and notoriety.
Make sure you buy her new album Smilers! It rocks. | Get at Short URL | Download Aimee Mann - The Highway Girl | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 94 Gigi Sohn with the music of Gentleman Caller | Gentleman Caller are the most incredible band I've found since starting
SMtv. I discovered them when I was looking for a video director for my
song Days Like This. I ended up wirking with Ryan Newman, who had
directed many videos for Gentleman Caller. I immediately fell in love
with their sound. Kenny Childers has one of the most beautiful voices
I've ever heard and one I could listen to for hours. I've yet to have
the pleasure of meeting the band, but cannot wait to have them on the
show.
This particular episode comes to you from the Consumer Electronics Show
in Las Vegas earlier this year. I sat down with Public Knowledge
Founder Gigi Sohn and discussed all that's wrong with copyright. Gigi's one of the sharpest minds out there if you ask me. My
thanks to Digital Freedom for organizing this. | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 94 Gigi Sohn with the music of Gentleman Caller | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 93 Paleo | I first met Paleo when I was recording a show with These United States
at IOTA in Virginia. His music is intense and so is he. Paleo is
David Strackany and I thoroughly enjoyed sitting down with him at a
noisy, outside patio. Paleo is also the first artist who requested we
record the live performance outside in the street while he leaned up
against a stranger's van. We'll have the video for you soon.In all my years doing this show I've never
met an artist who treats touring more like a business. He books his
own tours and makes a solid living as an artist. Kudos to Paleo for
his level of commitment to not only the craft, but the business of music.
My gratitude to Meadowlark in Denver who graciously opened their doors to let us record this show there.Buy Death & Taxes by writing to David Strackany!Photo by Cary Norton. | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 93 Paleo | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 91 Teitur | Teitur is a classic artist that I feel so grateful to feature on the show. Perhaps my most enjoyable show ever recorded at the beautiful Soiled Dove in Denver. Apart from having a successful career of his own and working with artists like Rufus Wainwright, Aimee Mann and John Mayer, Teitur has penned songs with Corinne Bailey Rae. Mayer says, "(Poetry and Airplanes) may be one of the best albums to come along in the last five years. Music like this is jet fuel on the fire of a broken heart." I couldn't have put it better myself.Teitur's voice will melt you.Snag yourself a copy of his latest, The Singer! | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 91 Teitur | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 87 Reverend Deadeye | Reverend Deadeye won't talk about whether or not a Rattlesnake really did bite him in the eye. But one listen to his music and you know he's been through a lot in life. His music's passionate, raw and very unique. The son of a reverend, he grew up playing music with his family on a reservation. I had a great time hanging with this guy. | SMtv 86 Kristoffer Ragnstam | Sweden's Kristoffer Ragnstam writes such great songs and sings and performs them with equal intensity. He's featured on the cover of this month's German Vanity FairAnother
great artist brought to my attention by the wonderful John Porter over
at Bluhammock Records. I had the great pleasure of meeting Kristoffer
when he appeared on The Samantha Murphy Show from SXSW. I decided to
edit the interview into a podcast to make sure everyone got to hear his
amazing music. A real sweetheart of a guy, too!Buy Sweet Bills and Other Side of the Room! | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 86 Kristoffer Ragnstam | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 77 Natalie Prass | When David Wright of Speakerheart played me Natalie's music, I was immediately touched by her voice. Next I started to love her quirky, unusual writing style. She's a true artist. This is only the second artist in three years that I've featured on SMtv who doesn't have an album out. I'm pretty adamant about it. I broke the rule only for Alex Davis and now for Natalie Prass, both of whom I feel won't let me down in the future. All three songs were recorded by me live on the day of the interview. Most were first takes. | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 77 Natalie Prass | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 76 Matthew Ryan | Matthew Ryan has been making great music for over a decade. Most recently he had a song featured on the TV show House. His new album, Matthew Ryan vs the Silver State, won't be released until April Fools Day, 2008 (it ain't no joke!). I love his music and am so honored to have him on the show.My thanks to Holland Nix for making this happen.Buy the Album (4/1/08)! | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 76 Matthew Ryan | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 75 Swati | Swati, meaning "birth of a star" in Hindu, came to my attention by way of the amazing Abby White, Music Editor for Performing Songwriter Magazine.Swati is real and refuses to be anything but herself. | SMtv 74 Josh Doyle | Josh Doyle reminds me of Paul Weller mixed with Tom Waits. He's passionate and is a force to be reckoned with when there's a guitar in his hands. His former band, The Dum Dums, opened for Bon Jovi at Wembley and had success in Europe. My favorite way to hear Josh is solo. Don't miss his live performance at the end of the show. | SMtv 70 The Good Listeners | The Good Listeners music makes you feel like you're watching a film. Their song King Friday is made even more stunning by watching the accompanying clip from the film Soy Cuba. Take a look. Those of you in the LA area can meet me at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Wed, Sept 19 for Young Director's Night, where The Good Listeners will be performing.

| SMtv 68 Carrie Rodriguez | Carrie Rodriguez hails from Austin, Texas but makes her home in Brooklyn, NY now. This might give you some idea of how eclectic her music is. You'll hear elements of Lucinda Williams, with whom Carrie's been touring with this summer, but she also incorporates elements of jazz and rock in her sound. The fabulous Bill Frisell plays on the album.Buy the Album! | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 68 Carrie Rodriguez | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 64 Miniature Tigers | Miniature Tigers are the best unsigned band I've ever heard. Truthfully! 22 year old Charlie Brand wrote all the songs and played all the instruments on this stunning debut. I'm speechless and SO thankful to 8mm for telling me about these guys. You can't buy the album yet, so check back with me.If you're in LA, I'll see you this Monday Night at Silverlake Lounge for their set. | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 64 Miniature Tigers | Play in Popup.
| | |
| SMtv 61 Eleni Mandell | Eleni Mandell's music takes me back to another time. Her latest effort, Miracle of Five, has elements of big band, jazz and even swing, but her songs are modern and demand you listen to the lyrics.Wilco's Nels Cline can be heard throughout this album on a variety of instruments. A beautiful journey from start to finish.Buy the Album! | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 61 Eleni Mandell | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 58 Derren Raser | Derren Raser performs perhaps the best live performance here since SMtv's inception. If you're a fan of John Mayer and Michael Buble, you'll love San Diego's Derren Raser. His latest effort, The King of I'll Tell You Next Week, is produced by SMtv's artist #22 Greg Laswell, now signed to Van Guard Records.

| SMtv 53 Revival | What can I say about Revival?
Is it necessary for me to share my feelings that they're without a doubt a band you will definitely see on the Billboard Charts one day? Do you need to know how much I love Josh Read's voice and music? Does it matter that he drove through the icy winter in an unregistered van to spend an afternoon with me and a few cans of beer? Damn right it does.
I love this band.
Listen.
Thank you.

| SMtv 52 Ben Carroll | I met NYC artist Ben Carroll earlier this year when we played a show together. I was immediately impressed by his voice and stage presence.
I hope those of you in New York City will come see Ben and me play live this Friday, December 15 @ The Living Room's brand new upstair's lounge. Ben's on @ 8:30 and I'm at 10:30.

| SMtv 50 These United States | Essentially, Jesse Elliott (on the right) is These United States, but the input of Tom Hnatow is not to be dismissed. I loved these guys and had the best time with them in the basement of IOTA in Arlington, VA last night. Jesse Elliott is a star on the rise. He reminds me of a 60's poet. A joy to be around and his music kicks major ass.
You can't Buy the Album yet, so go to their Myspace and then write and thank me for introducing you to this magical music.
You're welcome.

| SMtv 40 ~ Paul Chesne | Paul Chesne is a rocker. Just drop into one of his live shows and at any given time you'll see members of The Red Hot Chili Peppers in the audience. Top musicians line up to play with the guy. Women swoon. Some people just have it. Paul Chesne has "it." I took this photo of him in my former living room while he played "You Owe Me."

| SMtv 38 ~ Susan Marshall | Susan Marshall is without a doubt one of the finest singers I've ever heard. Her voice comes from a place deep inside her soul.
Rolling Stone's Shirley Halperin speaks of Susan's performance at the Gram Parsons tribute:
"...But the spine-chill award went to Memphis soul singer Susan Marshall, who belted a powerful "Do Right Woman" that practically brought people to their knees. "She's my secret weapon," Polly said. "No one knows who she is, but she wows them every time."
My thanks to Jeff Cline who engineered this show at The University of Memphis.

| SMtv 26 ~ Otis Gibbs | Otis Gibbs is an Americana treasure. His songwriting is simple and complex at the same time. I had such a great time talking to this kind man. The CBGB's of Indianapolis is a place called "The Patio." Sadly, it's closing it's doors and has asked Otis to be the last to perform before it does so. If you're in the area, don't miss Otis @ The Patio November 26. | Get at Short URL | Download SMtv 26 ~ Otis Gibbs | Play in Popup.

| SMtv 21 ~ Eric Schwartz | Strong content. This show is not intended for children under the age of 18 and may be offensive to Christians. The views of the artists on SMtv do not necessarily reflect those of SMtv or it's producer, however we respect their right to have them. I also played some music (not as much as usual, but hey...we had a lot to talk about)! I had to edit out 15 minutes of live music and chat because we went over time-wise. I really don't like having to edit, but I can't exceed 80 minutes for technical reasons. Boundaries suck.
