Welcome to “One Theme at a Time”, a one theme only podcast of the WKU Modern Languages Podcast series. We hope you will enjoy our episodes in which we present just one theme related to the world of languages. Just about every two weeks we will present a new episode of “One theme at a time”, with guest speakers that will talk in English about a variety of topics of general interest related to the different world cultures we teach at WKU.

This is the first episode of the Spring 2007 series of One Theme at a time. In Episode 12 we investigated the origen of the famous song: Happy Birtday to you, and discovered that it is not only a song created by two teachers from Kentucky, but that have been influencing the whole world since 1893!

A Festival of Languages | Play in Popup.
A Festival of Languages is episode 4 of One Theme at a Time podcast series of the WKU. This is a recorded live podcast that presents the annual regional International Foreign Language Festival celebrated on March 3th at Western Kentucky University. Over 800 High School students competed during the festival to classify for the final competition at the University of Kentucky.

Two Critical Languages to Learn is the third episode of One Theme at a Time. In this episode we talk about President Bush's National Security Language Initiative to promote the study of less commonly taught languages, in our case Chinese and Russian. We spoke with professors Laura McGee, Haiwang Yan, and Charlie Pickle about critical languages in the Twenty first century and how Chinese and Russian are two languages more popular to learn than we cold have imagine.

Wintern Term Abroad | Play in Popup.
Winter Term Abroad is the second episode of One Theme at a Time. In this episode we will talk about two WKU 2006 winter term courses that took students to different Spanish speaking countries during two weeks to study the history and the agriculture of the visited regions in Mexico, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico. We spoke with professor Susann Davis, and with Chelsey Shelton, a student that participated in the course visiting Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and Mexico. Also we spoke with Stephany Peterson and Liz Tunks, both Spanish majors that went to Mexico to study the Mayan's ruins
