Whether you are learning to swim for the first time, attending life-saving lessons or competing at grassroots level – swimming allows everyone to have fun and stay fit whatever your age. The sport has grown in popularity since the Beijing Olympics last year - with stars such as Rebecca Adlington providing positive role models for rising talent. The sport now plays a wider role in improving health and fitness levels across the UK. Nowhere else is this more apparent than at the Kellogg’s Swimtastic Awards 2009, which celebrated some of the country’s most outstanding non-elite achievements in the pool. Aimed at amateur swimmers, the awards recognise people of all ages and abilities as well as those responsible for providing learn to swim lessons. Some have gone beyond the call of duty to help share the love of swimming with their friends, family and community. Others are so committed to bettering themselves or improving the lives of others that they set the standard for others to draw inspiration from, raising money for noble causes or showing the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity. Nearly two-thirds of leading IT professionals believe their infrastructures are not flexible enough to meet the changing business priorities, according to research released. Of the 200 top IT professionals surveyed in Fujitsu’s new report entitled Dynamic Infrastructures and the Future of IT, 61% feel that their IT infrastructure will have to be more flexible in order to cope with present economic conditions. The report explores the need for increased agility in the current economic conditions to ensure the businesses that survive, thrive come the recovery. This is set to become the cornerstone of improved competitive advantage. As signs of economic recovery start to appear after a year of doom and gloom, competition in the bounceback is essential - IT professionals can emerge with renewed vigour and properly assess their company’s needs in a new business environment. 53% of respondents expressed a desire to be proactive and change the way that IT is recognised within their organisation. Signs that the business/IT relationship requires rethinking is also becoming apparent with IT departments researching alternative IT delivery scenarios such as ‘as a service’ models and cloud computing – computing models that were largely conceptual before the recession and have now matured. However, many organisations have not been able to implement them due to cutbacks in the downturn. This has also held back strategic investment into server virtualisation which nearly half of respondents say they plan to implement to help achieve corporate and operational change goals. The findings unveiled in a White Paper this week have garnered the opinions from 200 top IT professionals. Almost half of the IT leaders canvassed stated they’d be focussed on enhancing their company’s competitive advantage in the recession by exploring flexible approaches to IT delivery (52%), improving communications within their organisation (51%) and reducing the cost of IT delivery (43%). It seems tech-led companies are set on creating a competitive edge for themselves and offering cutting edge customer service. Customer experience was highlighted as a particular pressure ‘from above’ felt by IT departments and one which ideally they can be integral in providing solutions to. Chris Bone, the Enterprise Products and Solutions Specialist at Fujitsu has for a number of years been at the forefront of innovation within the IT sector. Here he talks us through the power of thinking differently; the importance of strategy, which shouldn’t be confused with the size of investment; and why there’s not one panacea necessarily to solve your IT issues. People of Earth! Don't Panic | Play in Popup.
Do you know the answer to life, the universe and everything? Can you make a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster? Do you know where your towel is? If this makes sense then you must be aware of the science fiction comedy phenomenon Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If not then where have you been for the past 30 years? To mark the three decades since Douglas Adams' idea first came to life as a BBC Radio 4 series, a new book is being released that continues the adventures of Arthur Dent. The book - 'And Another Thing...' - was written by the best-selling author Eoin Colfer, and will be the first instalment in over seventeen years. It has received support from Jane Belson, the widow of the series' creator Douglas Adams, and is available to buy from Monday 12th October. Colfer is best known for his Artemis Fowl series, which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. It's come a long way from the drunken musings of Adams, who claimed he was lying in a field in Austria in the early 1970s gazing up at the stars when he thought it would be a good idea for someone to write a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. The original radio series developed into a multi media phenomenon, which spawned books, records, a TV series, comic books, computer games, a stage show and in 2005 a Hollywood movie. Colfer will be touring around the UK to sign copies of his book beginning Sunday 11th October, where hundreds of eager readers will turn up in their dressing gowns - like the series' protagonist Arthur Dent - to hear a live reading of the eagerly-awaited book from the new author himself at the Southbank Centre in London... So don your dressing gown and make your way down there! In the clip below, Colfer discusses the Hitchhiker's phenomenon, as well as the pressure to make 'And Another Thing...' as funny, and as enjoyable, as its predecessors. What makes a modern mum? | Play in Popup.
If you think being a mum in the 21st century is hard work, spare a thought for the mums of 100 years ago. Like us, they had their hands full. Unlike us, they had little social freedom and no household gadgets to ease the gruelling manual labour of housework. Things have changed a lot in 100 years, but just how different is our own experience of motherhood from that of our own mums and grandmas? A significant three quarters of women agree that the responsibility of household chores has been lifted from them over the past 100 years. Yet only 34% of us say that these responsibilities in the home are now shared between partners more than they had been between their parents. The report published by Persil to commemorate its centenary reveals that 72% of modern women think the washing machine has afforded them the most time in their day. While we have moved forward towards equal rights and greater freedom, it seems some of us would like to take a step back in into domesticity (although maybe a more modern version). A quarter of us genuinely enjoy our roles as homemakers and over two thirds (63 per cent) of women who describe themselves as stay-at-home mums cherish the role. We are increasingly attracted to spending more time at home yet a fifth don’t feel we have taken on traditional homemaking skills as well as our mothers. We now even cite the likes of Barbara Good and Nigella Lawson as role models and hanker for the status of ‘domestic goddess’ our mums and grandmas enjoyed. There is, of course, much more to the story of how women’s – and mums’ – roles in society have changed over the course of the last century. How well do you know the history of the British mum and what’s next in their evolution? In the 1950’s Persil asked the question ‘What is a mum?’ in their first TV advert and mums have remained a key theme over the decades. Click here to learn how major events have helped shape women and modern mums during the last 100 years. For more information visit www.persil.co.uk

Brits Ignorant of Home Heritage
Over half of Brits don't know where Hadrian's Wall is! Over half of us are planning to take short breaks here in the UK this year, with more than four in ten more likely to holiday in Britain this year than previously. While this is potentially great news for British tourism, new research has revealed some serious knowledge gaps about precisely what is on offer, right here on our doorstep. According to the study by destination marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative, when confronted with an image of Hadrian's Wall (the UK's greatest Roman monument) over half were unaware it was even in Britain. 27% assumed it was in Canada, 16% plumped for Finland and a confused 10% placed the photo in Alaska. Over a third of the polled respondents admitted to putting more into research of foreign tourist destinations than UK hotspots and 29% admitted they are more likely to visit historic landmarks when they go abroad. For those of us keen to holiday at home this year, it's clear we need to do more research to get the most out of our time away. Lisa ButcherÂ’s Summer Fashion Fix | Play in Popup.
As we prepare for the season of warm weather ahead, the need to update our summer wardrobe provides a great excuse for hitting the high street! Yet instead of filling us with glee, many of us may already be experiencing the onset of ‘Seasonal Wardrobe Syndrome’ – worrying about what we’ll look like in those skimpier summer clothes. Over the last few months we’ve been hiding our arms and legs away behind thick jumpers and woolly tights – and for many the thought of wearing a strappy top or bikini is already a daunting prospect. There’s no need to panic though, if you are worried about exposing those winter muffin tops then there is still time to tone your tummy. By simply adopting a healthier lifestyle and eating sensibly, you can look great and enjoy this summertime with confidence. This summer 2 out of 3 British women will suffer from “Seasonal Wardrobe Syndrome”, according to the new research by Special K, with the average British woman setting a target of losing half a stone or more. The syndrome also manifests itself in a significant number of women being in denial when it comes to their actual size. The research shows that 54 per cent of women admit they will diet to get into their summer clothes from last year rather than move up a size. A spokeswoman for Special K said: "The onset of finer weather is often the spark for a wave of summer dieting by British women, we found. "Women do not want to buy a new summer wardrobe because it means they are admitting they cannot fit into last year's so they either lose weight or feel the squeeze. "And this year, unlike others, financial reasons are also a major factor behind Seasonal Wardrobe Syndrome. So it is even more important to be able to wear last year's clothes." So rather than have your confidence levels plummet when the temperature rises Lisa Butcher is on hand to guide you through the styles which will work best for your shape. The What Not To Wear fashion expert and model shows us a selection of fabulous clothes and flattering seasonal trends to allow you to dress with confidence at any stage of your transformation. The UK's largest construction firms have offered a glimmer of hope to subcontractors striving to beat the recession. In a shrinking market where competition is fierce, new research from NetRegs.gov.uk shows that 95 per cent of large firms will give preference to subcontractors who can prove their green credentials. The survey shows that during a time of oversupply, large firms with a turnover in excess of £10 million will increasingly use a subcontractor's environmental credentials as a key factor when deciding how to award contracts. The results also highlighted that 87 per cent of large construction firms have more confidence in subcontractors with proven green credentials: 76 per cent of them citing a reduced risk of prosecution. In addition, over half of respondents (56 per cent) think green policies will save subcontractors money - a welcome bonus in these tough economic times. A staggering 93 per cent of construction industry bosses also think that proof of environmental responsibility will move up their firm's agenda over the next two years. For a clearer picture of how adopting positive environmental practices can boost the fortunes of your own business, click on the link below to watch a video report with comment from ED Mitchell, Head of Business Performance and Regulation for the Environment Agency. New growth charts launched for National Breastfeeding Awareness Week | Play in Popup.
All newborn babies and children up to four years old will have their growth measurements plotted on new charts from this week. The launch of the charts, which have been developed for the Department of Health by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, based on the World Health Organisation's work, coincides with National Breastfeeding Awareness Week (10 - 16 May) and replaces current measures which are based predominately on babies fed with formula milk. Research shows that breast-fed babies tend to gain weight at a healthier pace and are less likely to become obese in later life. The new charts will play an important role in establishing breastfeeding as the norm and will be included in the Personal Child Health Records, which parents of every newborn are given. They will help parents and healthcare professionals identify children at early risk of obesity and provide important reassurance for parents of breast-fed babies, who are likely to gain weight more slowly. The new charts include parent-friendly instructions and a chart specifically for premature babies. As babies can lose and gain weight at different rates during birth and two weeks, it is recommended that they are not measured during this time. The charts also help make more reliable predictions of a child's adult height. In this video, Professor Charlotte Wright of the Royal College of Paediatrics explains why the charts have been introduced and how they can help you follow the growth of your baby For more information visit www.breastfeeding.nhs.uk

Get Your Family Healthy From | Play in Popup.
With less than 8 weeks to go until the kids break up from school and the summer holidays officially begin - millions of us are already getting our bodies ship-shape for the beach. But while this may be boosting self esteem and giving us a much needed feel-good factor, we should also consider the impact our diet can have on the inside, where it really counts. While we are increasingly aware of the dangers of eating too much saturated fat, according to a new report over eight in ten Brits are still putting their health at risk by exceeding the Food Standards Agency's Recommended Daily Allowance of 20g per day for women (30g per day for men). Eating too much saturated fat increases blood cholesterol levels and thus the risk of heart disease. However research by independent dietary advisory body The Fat Panel reveals that one in ten Brits are still getting more than 18% of their daily calories from this dietary 'baddie' compared with the recommended target of 11%. According to the Cabinet Office, if everyone reduced their intake to the Government's recommended levels a staggering 3,500 lives could be saved each year across the UK. Starting this week, if we all took a few simple steps to cut our saturated fat intake, the health benefits could make huge differences to our lives. We all know the typical foods that contain high levels of saturated fat - such as fatty cuts of meat, butter, cheese, whole milk and pastries. However even foods we tend to think of as non-fatty can also contain saturated fat - there can be a lot of it in yoghurt and in and under chicken skin, for example. Whether it be eating low-fat dairy products, grating cheese instead of slicing it, or reading food labels correctly - there are simple steps we can all take to reduce saturated fat levels in both our own and our family's daily diet. To help you get started in the run up to summer, to actually be as healthy as you'd like to look, click here for The Fat Panel's video of ten easy but potentially life-saving tips. Delicious Celebrity Recipes... | Play in Popup.
With the vast array of celebrity chefs offering their mouth-watering recipes for us to follow, cooking restaurant quality food in our own kitchen has never been easier. Celebrity chefs themselves have become household names, and their cookbooks offer quick and easy ways to make delicious meals. But when it comes down to it, how healthy are these recipes? A new report by independent dietary advisory body The Fat Panel found that following a recipe from the likes of Anthony Worrell Thompson or Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall can contain over 200% of your Guideline Daily allowance (GDA) of saturated fat in a single serving. This is fine as a tasty treat once in a while, but eaten on a regular basis can cause problems to your health. The report goes on to show how some simple swaps and switches can make a dramatic difference to saturated fat content, without affecting the flavour and food experience. For instance, simply swapping butter and cream for margarine or a vegetable oil based spread and yoghurt in one recipe (Baked Apples by John Burton Race and Allegra Hicks) would reduce the saturated fat content by 83%, from 120% of a woman's GDA of saturated fat (24g) to just 20% (24g down to 4g of saturated fat). In this video feature, The Fat Panel's registered dietician Sian shows us how simple it is to follow your favourite chef's cookbook and with a few little tweaks, turn them into scrumptious meals that you can enjoy as often as you like. Life's no beach for holiday donkeys | Play in Popup.
Hundreds of thousands of horses and donkeys are suffering overseas due to tourists, yet many British holidaymakers are unaware of their impact and how to act responsibly when they encounter working animals abroad. While British beach donkeys are regulated - no passengers over eight stone, a day off each week and a one hour lunch break - overseas it is a different story. Egypt and Jordan have been recognised by the Brooke, the UK's leading overseas equine welfare charity, as popular tourist destinations that widely use horses and donkeys for tourist trade. With recent ONS statistics showing that the number of Brits travelling to Jordan doubled last year and that nearly half a million British people travelled to Egypt within the first nine months of 2008, it is important that British travellers are aware of the issues concerning the use of working animals abroad. Horses and donkeys are used to taxi tourists across difficult and dangerous terrain to historical landmarks. The animals are often over-worked, under-watered and under-fed, and have the added burden of frequently carrying passengers who are too heavy for them. Haggling is common as credit crunch tourists negotiate rock bottom prices and quibble over the last pound. Owners, whose livelihoods are dependent on these earnings, are often left short changed and are tempted to overwork the animals in their desperation to bring in enough money to feed their family. The Brooke has released video footage and images from popular British tourist destinations including the Temples of Luxor and the Ancient City of Petra, showing that many tourists disregard the welfare of animals whilst they have fun in the sun. The Brooke is calling on all tourists to take action against this anguish by following a simple code when using working horses and donkeys abroad. Key points include: * Match your size with the size of the animal - if you are heavy or tall, think whether a small donkey can really take your weight * Pay a fair price for a ride - bargaining means the animal will have to work harder and longer to bring in an income * One person per animal when riding * The number of people shouldn't exceed the number of wheels when using a carriage horse * Don't be distracted by decorations - check for hidden sores, wounds or prominent bones Kimberly Wells, from the Brooke's Animal Welfare Team, who wrote the code states: "It may seem obvious, but it's being ignored. We see first hand the painful results - exhaustion, injuries, dehydration, heat stress, beatings and wounds - overworked animals suffering for tourism. Tourists can have a hugely positive impact on how communities treat their animals so we are urging them to play their part and work with us to reduce animal suffering across the world. Every tourist has the power to reduce animal affliction - both by following these simple guidelines and also by flagging up concerns to local authorities and tour operators, which will encourage a needed change in poor animal welfare practices." The Brooke's lifesaving work helps ease animal suffering across the developing world while supporting the livelihoods of the owners who depend on their animals to bring in an income. UK Crime Witnesses Offered More | Play in Popup.
While well over a third (38%) of Brits have seen a crime-taking place, 36% have not volunteered to act as a witness in court, according to a new report. Thousands of prosecutions are going without vital testimony because eye-witnesses are deterred from attending court due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of what is required. Many are scared to relay their account of events because they simply do not know enough about being a witness in court. Others are afraid of the thought of standing up in the courtroom, while some are even concerned they will receive third party threats. The survey by Directgov reveals that out of those UK residents who have witnessed a crime, 36% have witnessed an assault take place. Under a quarter (23%) have witnessed a motoring offence while only 16% have witnessed a burglary. However over a quarter (27%) of residents say they would not know where to turn for information about appearing as a witness to such crimes in court. Others admit they would rely solely on the advice of family and friends. Eyewitness testimony is a critical part of the judicial process. To provide people with more information on going to court and the special protection methods available, the Government has set up a new online initiative to guide people through the process. If you are going to court in the future, or know someone who is, watch video for a step-by-step guide. How To Solve Your Mortgage Repayment Problems | Play in Popup.
As a homeowner in the current climate, there's a good chance you're worried - perhaps deeply - about being able to pay your mortgage. It may seem small consolation but, as you may have noticed, at least you're not the only one. But whatever the extent of your personal situation, panicking or ignoring your problems are the worst things you could do. Adam Sampson, Chief Executive of Shelter said: "As the credit crunch continues to bite, the reality is that more and more homeowners will struggle to keep up with their mortgage payments this year. We are seeing increasing numbers of people coming to us for help with mortgage problems and we would urge anyone in difficulty not to bury their heads in the sand and to seek advice early to ensure they don't lose their homes." Instead, it's important to keep cool and undertake practical strategies for staying on track and out of trouble. Here are just a few, as recommended by leading money advice charities and the Council of Mortgage Lenders: * If you're beginning to worry, you should talk your lender immediately. Yes, you might be reluctant and even find the prospect a bit scary, but it's crucial. The Government has created safety nets to help you, such as the Court Pre-Action Protocol, which requires lenders to demonstrate that repossession of your home is their last resort. * If you are benefitting from lower mortgage rates, overpay each month if you can. It will improve equity, reduce interest payments and cut the length of your mortgage. * While interest rates are low, switch to a repayment mortgage - but check if there are charges associated with it first. * Prioritise debts - pay your mortgage, utilities and council tax before unsecured debts like credit cards - though you should continue to talk to your creditors and seek free independent financial advice. If you're already in trouble it's vital not ignore your debts, or they'll just get worse. Keep paying as much as you can, as this will help you in negotiations with your lender. And don't just walk away from the property - the debt on it remains your responsibility. If you feel you're at a loss for ways to get out of trouble, it's important that you take advantage of the free, independent and incredibly valuable advice that organisations like your local Citizens Advice Bureau, Shelter, National Debtline and CCCS has to offer. It can make a huge and positive difference, regardless of the severity of your situation. And now there's also a brand new Government scheme specifically designed to help homeowners remain in their homes if they fall on difficult times. The Homeowners Mortgage Support (HMS) scheme will enable borrowers who suffer from a temporary loss of income to cut their mortgage interest payments for up to two years and help them get back on track with their finances. To find out more, take a look at the video below in which Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Housing Minister Margaret Beckett announce and explain the scheme. Bring back Fish on a Friday! | Play in Popup.
How many times a week do you eat fish? The Food Standards Agency recommends that we should all eat at least two portions every week, one of which should be oily. Not only is fish a rich source of protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids, but it is extensive in variety - so there is a fish out there to suit every taste bud and occasion. However, it seems only a quarter of us are meeting this quota. So why is this? Perhaps one reason is the dying tradition of eating fish on a Friday, with only 5% of us now still sitting down to a fish based meal at the end of the week. To support the launch of their Simply Baked to Perfection range, Birds Eye took a closer look at our fish-eating habits, with their research finding that one in four people say they would rather not cook fish as they think it is too expensive. Nearly one in five people think fish is too smelly, while just under a quarter either don't know how to prepare fish or simply don't like handling it. Whatever your excuse is, the facts are there - fish should be an important part of everyone's diet. So whether you are new to preparing fish, aren't sure what to do with it, or just don't have the time to try, take a look at this video. Aldo Zilli, one of the nation's favourite fish chefs, takes us to Billingsgate Market where he gives us some of his top tips and introduces us to a few friends on the way. His main aim? To show the great British public that fish needn't be complicated and encourage them to start eating more fish as part of a healthy balanced diet - especially on a Friday! At a time in which we're too often called upon to think about our own security, it can be all too easy to forget that there are other vitally important causes that require our attention just as much. One man who's never forgotten this and never will is Captain Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a radical environmental organisation. After nearly forty years, his passionate commitment to eliminating the practices of whaling, poaching, shark farming and the destruction of marine habitat. Captain Paul Watson was a co-founder of Greenpeace in the early '70s. Midway through the decade he broke away and formed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, driven by the belief that a much tougher approach was needed to effectively combat whalers and other violators of ocean law. Every winter since then, he and his group of volunteers have engaged in a campaign to hunt down and stop Japanese ships from killing whales in the name of research. Called activists and heroes by some, eco-pirates by others, their work is dangerous, controversial and has garnered huge media interest worldwide. Whale Wars, a new documentary series beginning on the Discovery Channel on Monday 27th April charts the latest endeavours of the team aboard the Steve Irwin. Know your oats | Play in Popup.
Our eating habits have come a long way in recent years but with complicated labelling and so much information out there, knowing what's good for you isn't always that easy. Recent findings show that in fact almost two thirds of us are confused by reading reports on what is and isn't healthy and even more recall conflicting stories about the same food or drink being both good and bad for our health. Well keeping it simple can often be best so what could be simpler than the great British staple, oats. Eating just one portion of oats per day [approximately three grams] is a highly effective way to prevent fatty build-ups in our arteries. A groundbreaking recent report published in the British Food Journal found that this can reduce cholesterol levels by as much as 20%. This adds to a growing body of evidence showing that porridge and similar foodstuffs can make a unique contribution to our general health. Heart disease is still the number one killer in the UK today but the humble oat holds the secret to a healthier heart, containing a compound of soluble fibre called beta-glucan that can be found in bread, cereals and oat-based bars. They're easy to prepare and won't break the bank. For all the information you need on keeping your heart healthy, watch this video with top dietician Dr Carrie Ruxton who has all the advice you need. National Grid Calls for UK Energy Masterplan To Meet Climate Change Challenge | Play in Popup.
The company is seeking greater Government, industry and consumer collaboration in order to meet the Government targets of 80 per cent emissions reduction by 2050, and 15 per cent renewable energy sources by 2020. National Grid Chief Executive, Steve Holliday, said; "Despite the challenging economic conditions, we must not take our eye off the ball in tackling climate change. This joined-up approach is essential to get the right legislative and regulatory frameworks in place and ensure necessary infrastructure investment is available in a timely manner for the connection of new renewable sources of electricity generation, and development of technologies such as biogas production, and linking smart meters into smart grids. "However, electricity is not the full story. Heat and transport must also play their part. These are all areas where policy is still to be developed and new technology needs to be fostered. That is why we need a Masterplan." National Grid has developed scenario's to determine the projected energy mix required to meet Government's 2020 climate change and renewable sources targets. It is investing around £3 billion a year in its electricity and gas networks - approximately three quarters of this investment in the UK - and focusing on new technologies to enhance energy efficiency across its networks. The company is also implementing annual carbon budgets across all its operations from 1 April 2009 and aligning emissions reductions alongside customer service, reliability, safety and financial performance management. National Grid's Head of Climate Change and Corporate Responsibility, Joe Kwasnik, said; "We believe National Grid is one of the first companies in the world to align company-wide emissions with performance management. Our new interim emissions reduction target of 45 per cent by 2020 - which goes further than the European Union's potential 30% reduction commitment by 2020 - will provide a more relevant milestone for our business planning process and ensure emissions management is integrated into every aspect of our operational decision-making." Be financially prepared for female cancers | Play in Popup.
Are You Covered For Cancer Costs? One in four cancer patients have difficulty keeping up with everyday payments. Learn how to keep your family financially safe in our video above. We all worry about our health to a certain degree, but when it comes to more serious issues such as cancer it's still easy to take an 'out-of-sight, out-of-mind' approach. While many of us will know a female friend or family member who has been affected by the disease, we may still think it will never happen to us. Yet over 45,000 women across the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, that's more than 100 British women being diagnosed on a daily basis, and three quarters of women affected are under 70 years of age.* High profile celebrity cancer patients have helped increase public awareness in women's cancer. This combined with the positive changes to the way such issues are now talked about in society, and improvements in technology has lead to earlier diagnosis, meaning more women are able to successfully fight the disease. Breast cancer survival rates in particular have improved dramatically over the last 20 years - 8 out of 10* of us would survive if we were diagnosed today. Yet any one of us could be struck down with cancer at any time - contrary to popular belief, the disease does not just affect those with a family history or poor lifestyle. And it's not just the health and emotional demands we need to think about, but the financial implications as well. Many of us are unaware of the financial consequences a cancer diagnosis would have on our lives and family. With having to take time off work, many patients find themselves without enough money to cover the things we take for granted in good health, such as paying for bills or childcare costs. According to Macmillan Cancer Support, one in four cancer patients admit having difficulty keeping up with payments whilst fighting the disease - with many suffering real financial hardship. It's a stress we could all do without at a time when we should be concentrating on getting better. For expert information on the risk and causes of female specific cancers, and how to insure you have the financial help you and your family need should you be diagnosed with cancer, watch the video. * Cancer Research UK For more information, visit www.aigdirect.co.uk/health/products/wellwoman/?DCMP=WellWoman_HowtoTV

80% Of Allergies Linked To Household Dust Mites | Play in Popup.
Common household dust mites may be a factor in as many as 80% of asthmas, hay fevers and other allergic ailments, according to Allergy UK. The tiny bugs infest our beds, with the average bed hosting between 10 thousand and 10 million dust mites. Their highly allergenic droppings can cause us untold problems – particularly as a trigger for asthma. Yet of the 20 million people in the UK who suffer from allergies or asthma – a third of the population – many are completely unaware that dust mites are a contributing factor. Just half a millimetre in length and creamy white in colour, individual dust mites are hard to see but are so prolific that they and their waste can account for as much as 10% of a two-year old pillow. New research by You Gov for HoMedics shows that one in four people change their pillows every two years. On discovering the uncomfortable truth about dust mites, nearly half of the people surveyed resolved to change how frequently they change their pillows. Dust mites and their waste can double the weight of a mattress over a ten-year period – not exactly comforting news for the one in ten of us who have indeed used the same mattress for a decade. Dust mites don't like being too cold or too hot, and they love humid conditions. With this in mind, there are many simple steps we can take to evict them from their comfort zone during the annual Spring clean. Simply leaving windows open for extended periods and vacuuming regularly can make a significant difference, as can changing over to specific types of bedding and flooring materials that dust mites can’t settle in. You should always use a mattress protector that offers complete four way protection against dust mites and their waste, as well as bacteria, fluids and stains. Dust mites are more than just creepy and unpleasant – they are harmful to our wellbeing and that of our children, four in ten of whom suffer from allergies. Clearly, it’s time to flush out these horrible little stowaways once and for all. Click the link below for the facts about dust mites, and about how you can make sure that the only creature that gets to snuggle down in your mattress from now on is you. COTTON WOOL KIDS ANSWER BACK TO PARENTS
To the surprise of mums and dads everywhere, new survey results reveal that children are looking for an action-packed holiday outdoors this summer - so their parents should put aside any notion of putting their feet up. The poll commissioned by European camping holiday operator Eurocamp questioned 1179 children from all over the UK to find out what they are looking for in their forthcoming holiday for 2009. According to the survey, top on the list of holiday priorities among children aged 6 to 9 was 'Playing Outside'. 'Good beach and sea', 'exploring the local area', 'lots to do nearby' and 'good swimming pool' were also amongst the kids' favourites - completely at odds with their parents' top two choices of 'escaping everyday routine of home' and 'good food and drink'. While today's children are increasingly deprived of the freedom to play outside by worried parents and a lack of public leisure areas - the survey shows that this generation now looks to their holiday to give them the independence and adventure they crave at home. So how do you choose a holiday that's best suited to you and your kids' needs? The answers to this question is revealed in our exclusive Holiday '09 podcast hosted by family travel expert and author, Emma Mahony and her 3 young children Humphrey, Michael and Millie. According to a new survey by 3V Visa Internet Shopping Gift Cards, four in ten of us have the foresight to keep presents in reserve for when they've forgotten an occasion or need a gift at short notice. A third of people say they look out all year round for hints about what presents they can buy for people. But while these reserve gifts may save the giver some embarrassment - they may not always go down so well with the receiver. Just under half of us admit to recycling unwanted gifts and 20% of us have sold unwanted gifts to gain some of their monetary value. While most of us would love to be given a wish list from our nearest and dearest to help us with present choices, we don't always get one. The obvious solution if we really get stuck is to buy the omni-purpose gift of gift cards - that way we're assured the receiver can get something they really want. With a whopping 64% of us intending to avoid crowded shops and freezing temperatures by shopping on the internet during the festive and New Year sales - online gift cards are proving an increasingly popular present choice this season. 'Rebus' author launches £2m drive to rebuild the Scottish Braille Press | Play in Popup.
A £2 million campaign is launched today to re-house one of the nation's leading Braille printing presses - The Scottish Braille Press. It coincides with National Braille Week (4-10 Jan 2009), which this year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, whose invention in 1821 of a writing system based on embossed dots has had a profound effect on the lives of millions of people worldwide. Braille books, magazines and other materials are produced by the Scottish Braille Press - one of the largest and most respected providers of high quality alternative formats in the UK. It is part of the national charity Royal Blind, that provides services for the blind and the press specialises in the high quality production of Braille, Large Print and Audio - providing a transcription service since 1891. "Although equipped with state of the art printing equipment the building itself needs to be rebuilt" says Richard Hellewell, chief executive of Royal Blind, "and this is why we are campaigning to raise £2 million." The printing press, run and managed by Royal Blind, was built in the sixties and will be completely rebuilt. Bestselling 'Inspector Rebus' author Ian Rankin is lending his support to the campaign. His son is a pupil at the Royal Blind School, also run by Royal Blind. One of Rankin's best selling Rebus books is Fleshmarket Close, named after a real passageway in Edinburgh's Old Town. Today he was there in person to unveil 12 pages from the novel, which have been translated into Braille and mounted on the walls of the passageway itself. Rankin is calling for more creative works to be made available to people with reading difficulties. To mark the appeal, the Press is printing a Braille version of Rankin's Death is Not the End and the author visited the Press to see the first printed copies. We've all been given Christmas presents that weren't on our wish list. We've learned to smile convincingly at the gift-giver - as though we're really grateful for something that will probably go straight to the back of a cupboard, never to be seen again. In fact, TalkTalk, the home phone and broadband company, found that an incredible £2.2 billion is spent on unwanted presents each year! TalkTalk has teamed up with Keith Chegwin and have come to the rescue and brought back the good old-fashioned Swap Shop - making sure everyone gets something they really want this Christmas. TalkTalk understands people are fed up with wasting loads of money on parts of their phone and broadband package they don't use. In fact, its research has found that 94% of us don't want to pay for bits of our package we simply don't use, and 80% would like our package to be more flexible - which is why it has created myTalkTalk, a phone and broadband service that allows you to add features you want, and even take away those you no longer need!

14 is the happiest number | Play in Popup.
Girls who wear a size14 dress size rated their general happiness higher than any other, with a quarter saying they were extremely happy. More than 43 per cent of size 14 women said they were as happy as they could be with their career, while almost a third say they couldn't be more content with their love life. Second happiest, according to the research by Special K, are size 12 women, with almost three quarters saying they are completely satisfied with their friendships. Forty-five per cent also enjoy a very successful career. A spokeswoman for Special K, which carried out the poll, said: 'It's great to discover that being a size zero doesn't necessarily bring you happiness. Our research shows that the curvier size 14 woman is much more comfortable with their shape and has a happier outlook on life. ' But those who wear a size 24 or above didn't fare quite so well, with a staggering 18 per cent admitting they are extremely unhappy with their life. Less than four per cent are happy with their career, while more than one in ten admitted they were extremely unhappy when it comes to their love life. A spokeswoman for Special K added: 'It's great that curvier women are happier, but we know that many women still find it hard maintaining their ideal shape.' Someone who knows quite a bit about the size debate is Jessica Thackeray who experienced the less happy side of being a size 12 in the modelling world when she competed in the Miss England regional rounds. She was previously told be photographers she would never be a model because she wasn't skinny enough and then went on to beat 19 others to win the title of Miss Leeds. Here she tells us her experiences of the competition and how she maintains her shape and happiness. New Year, New You | Play in Popup.
With every new year comes a new year resolution - except all too often it's not new. Many of us vow to get fit but how many of us fall off the wagon before the tinsel is off the tree? A recent survey by Kellogg's found that seven in ten women diet every single year. Which begs the question why many struggle to maintain their goal weight or keep to the excess weight off in the long term. Amongst the common reasons for weight gain are getting older, retiring, stopping smoking, having children and going to university. The research also found that half of the population feel they are overweight and are trying to lose weight (this rises to 55% in women). If you're one of the many women who find it difficult to keep your regime going, Steve Barrett a top fitness advisor is on hand to offer easy to follow tips. Steve, formerly a National competitor in a variety of sports, and a Personal Trainer for more than two decades knows exactly how to kick-start a regime and stick to it. With these simple exercises, keeping your body in good shape doesn't mean having to splash out on pricey gym membership and the best bit is you can keep working out wherever you are - at home, at the office or even on the commute. Even the busiest of people have no excuse; these tips are simple and free! Here are some simple exercise to get yourself motivated, wherever you are: At your desk - Posture break 1. As you sit at your desk, sink down, moving your shoulder forward and towards your desk. Then slowly sit up, lifting your shoulders and straightening your spine to gradually pull your shoulder blades back, opening the chest. Sink down again and lift. 2. Sit in an upright position to straighten your back. Looking straight ahead, lift your shoulders whilst keeping your arms relaxed. Hold for a couple seconds and drop. Repeat until you begin to feel your shoulder muscles loosen. 3. Sit upright and this time, with your spine straightened, move your shoulders and arms forward and then back through the shoulder girdle, opening your chest wide. Repeat a few times and to finish off, get the blood pumping by circling your shoulders round until you feel more relaxed. At home - Revitalise 1. Whilst watching the TV, get a bit of exercise during the advert breaks. Stand looking ahead, lift your arms with your hands brought towards each other in front of the chest. With a straight back, begin to do small jumps, turning side to side whilst remaining on the same spot. Twist your body as your jump so your feet and arms turn in opposite directions. You can do this during the ads, your favourite show or even get a bit of music on - just as long as you make it fun! It's that time of year again when the actor in all of us makes an appearance. From pretending we're pleased with another pair of socks, to offering our services in the kitchen, Christmas is a time when we are most likely to say something...but mean something else. New research from Vodafone UK reveals the top ten most common sayings we're likely to say or hear this Christmas - and what we actually mean by them. Top of the list is "just what I've always wanted", which is uttered most often, though not that convincingly as three in four of us immediately assume they mean just the opposite. Other Top 10 fake festive phrases revealed by the research include: "no, of course the turkey isn't overdone," and "of course I'm not drunk" which has a believability rating of less than 5%! Don't forget those festive text messages too and realising who we sent them to the morning after... If you're confused with all the festive jargon - don't panic! Here to help us through this season's verbal minefield is actress and top Mock the Week comedienne Lucy Porter - who has her own interpretations on the most common festive lies. British Business determined to Weather the Storm | Play in Popup.
Despite the tales of economic woe, a benchmark survey of leading British finance directors shows the majority of firms are weathering the storm and determined to come out the other side. Although there is much talk of redundancies, only a fifth of firms sampled by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) have reduced their workforce in the past year. Three quarters also predict headcount will stay the same or even grow in the next 12 months. The majority appears to be investing their way out of a recession with between 70 - 80% of firms planning to maintain or increase spending on marketing, staff training and capital expenditure. This is certainly reassuring if you have been worried about what the future holds for you because of the economic situation. Many of us are fearing that we will either have to cut back on staff, lose our jobs or that we have no hope of having a career in the future, however despite the high profile redundancies taking place, we are actually more secure then we are lead to believe. Here to offer advice on coping with economic downturn is Director of CIMA, Ray Perry. Whether you are an employer, an employee or a student who is unsure of his or hers future, then watch Ray's tips on how you can beat the recession and look forward to a brighter future.
