Central Pennsylvanians look back on The War, Part 2 - September 2007
This summer, midstate residents spoke with WITF about their memories of WWII, which we shared on WITF 89.5 in advance of the premier of Ken Burns' The War on WITF-TV. Harrisburg resident Helen Bender Metzger married her husband on December 6, 1941 -- the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor. She raised their daughter while he went off to war. Pat McIntyre lives in Hershey, but she lived in Buffalo, New York, during World War II. Her father, two brothers, and soon-to-be-husband all saw action in the war. For these two women, memories of the home front during the war are vivid and powerful. They spoke this summer with WITF's Scott LaMar, and their comments were edited here by Craig Cohen.

Central Pennsylvanians look back on The War, Part 1- September 2007
This summer, midstate residents spoke with WITF about their memories of WWII, which we shared on WITF 89.5 in advance of the premier of Ken Burns' The War on WITF-TV. Camp Hill resident Arman Leo fought in seven major campaigns in Africa and Germany, and was awarded both the Bronze and Silver Stars. Harold Billow of Mount Joy was one of just a few soldiers to survive the Malmady Massacre, in which German troops executed 88 American prisoners. Paul Lehman of Halifax fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped to capture Hitler's retreat in the Austrian mountains. He, too, was awarded the Bronze Star. Here the three men share their memories of battle. They spoke this summer with WITF's Scott LaMar, and their comments were edited here by Craig Cohen.

Profile of a unique midstate gym –- May 31, 2007
(Pottsville) -- For more than a year, a group of developmentally disabled people in Schuylkill County has been trying to lose weight and get in shape. They work out at Slim Gyms Wellness Center in Pottsville -- the first of its kind in the county. It's run by Avenues, the agency formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy. Many are living with conditions like mental retardation and autism and some are wheelchair-bound and have never exercised before. But the nearly three dozen people who hit this unique gym are bound and determined to live a healthier lifestyle. WITF?s Tim Lambert sat in on one of their sessions as they went from machine to machine to work their arms, legs, back and shoulders. A recorded voice reminded them to switch stations every 60 seconds. Tim filed his audio postcard from that visit. Organizers are looking for additional money such as donations and grants in order to add support staff and a specialized scale to weigh those who are wheelchair-bound. More information is available by calling 570-628-5316 or toll free at 866-928-5316.
