Starting off the new year here with an immersive dubby set from Santa Cruz native, Ivan Ruiz. From the point of view of this humble radio host, dj, and peer, Ivan doesn't make mixes, he creates soundscapes as wide and varied as the spectrum of human emotion. This is a man who truly believes in the art of playing records. As for what he keeps in his crates? Deep is the operative word. This particular foray is a hypnotic groover of a house mix reminiscent of those late night sets at full moon beach parties where no one even considers leaving before sunrise. Christopher Moore aka Touch is a long time family friend from the old school. Hailing from Humboldt California this self-dubbed spiritual nomad together with his crew the Deep Groove Society entered the scene in Arcata and Eureka years ago, promptly filling a void of quality music for an area that shy of Haight/Ashbury has typically dictated the direction of hippy subculture. . . And by subculture, I mean music with consciousness. Over last decade the DGS has firmly planted a flag as the what's what up at the top of our state and made it yet another place on the map where you can find a top notch house and electronic music scene. These are some cats that are truly plugged into the underground.Fortunately for us, on a recent trip down south Touch came for a visit and brought his eclectic tribal tech vibe to MHYH. This is an excellent set to spark a spliff to, a deep voyage thru the jungles of Africa and out into space. Seriously heady action from the land of the world's tallest trees.
