Greener Wheels
Not everyone has the money or inclination to buy an electric hybrid or retrofit their wheels to run on biodiesel fuel made from animal fats. But what if it was easier for the average consumer to be more environmentally friendly about car maintenance? One small auto service chain claims that they are offering car owners a chance to do just that. The Allegheny Front's Kara Holsopple has more.

Urban Gas Drilling Could Come to a Neighborhood Near You
Energy producers in the Marcellus Shale formation are leasing more and more land above this deeply buried cache of natural gas. Rural regions aren't the only areas in Pennsylvania where deep shale wells could be drilled. Urban land might be next. Although there are no pending permits to drill inside city limits, Pittsburgh City Councilman Doug Shields says citizens in his district are already getting approached about leasing their gas rights. The Allegheny Front's Ann Murray recently talked with the councilman.

Changing Landscape and Climate Rough on Ducks
Human alterations to the landscape have dried up more than half of US wetlands. Now a new study predicts a warmer climate will also disrupt wetland ecosystems, and ducks will be on the losing end. At a popular stopping point for migratory waterfowl along the Ohio River in western Kentucky, one scientist is noticing changes in migration patterns. Micah Schweizer reports for the Ohio River Radio Consortium.

Sierra Club, Highlands Conservancy May Sue CONSOL for its Dunkard Creek Discharges
Two environmental groups say they will sue CONSOL Energy if the company does not come into compliance with federal water quality standards within the next 60 days. Ben Adducchio from West Virginia Public Broadcasting reports.

Are Flame Retardants Putting Us at Risk?
Flame retardant chemicals are used in hundreds of products in our homes and offices and schools. The chemicals can slow the spread of fire. But certain kinds of these chemicals leach out of our couches, our TVs, our carpet padding and many other things in our homes. And they're getting into our bodies.
