Interviews: Danièle Kemp, Jean-Noël Ducasse In this special program for Remembrance Day, we hear the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs the Honorable Alan Griffin. Major Jason Kerr is involved in the Fromelles Project, that is the task of identifying the remains of those Australian soldiers who were buried in pits by the Germans after the bloody battle of July 1916 at Fromelles. Some 5, 533 Australian soldiers were killed, wounded or missing in the one night of battle. The exhumation of the bodies of the soldiers has started and not all will be identified. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is planning for the inauguration of a Military Cemetery in 2010 at Pheasant Wood near Fromelles where the graves were found. Lionel Mill, a recipient of the The Sadlier-Stokes Scholarship, awarded annually to a dedicated French student who demonstrates a sound knowledge of Australia. The scholarship commemorates the great courage of WA soldiers Lieutenant Clifford Sadlier VC and Sergeant Charlie Stokes, during the battle to liberate Villers-Bretonneux towards the end of World War 1. Guillaume Moreel is the grandchild of Madame Marie-Paule de Massiet who has donated the land where the remains of the missing soldiers were found near Fromelles. Guillaume is also a recipient of the The Sadlier-Stokes Scholarship and was in Australia studying agriculture and hopes one day to run the farm owned by his family.
