THEME:416 is a 17 track mixed DJ set of un-signed Toronto artists. The mix, inspired by the energy that is Toronto, is a glimpse at some of the music produced by like-minded Toronto artists. The level of production on each track is astounding. And although Toronto has never been considered a Techno Mecca, this and other products like it raise the opinion of what Toronto has to offer. This selection of tracks and the artists who created them are an example of true techno fans who lurk just off the radar.

My lack of decent video editing software hasn't stopped me from making my first Podvert. I figured the intro music from my last episode (Lx7#003) was too good to not turn into something, so here's the result: a quick little Podvert / Promo Bumper / Video Intro. Purely, a low budget live recording that I did it in 3 takes. 1 for the drums, 1 for the synths and 1 for the vocals. Feel free to share it out.

The pre "Why" show on what started me into the world of producing. (audio blog style) Live Demo of an electro beat I was messing with on the drum machine that'll be part of a yet to be recorded track called "Talk". Also a brief description on my mindset when I wrote Januarys End back in 1999. January's End was the first track I wrote that captured what I was feeling at the time. Plus a brief explanation on my fascination with Salsa beats in techno.

There's nothing better then trying something out and finding out it works. Welcome to episode 6! I just recorded 15 minutes of me testing out some new music I made on the MPC. It's a different process then using my old hardware sequencer, but the results are just as exciting. Alittle back story on the Speedy J party and why it was so inspiring (see my blog for the Speedy J concert review). The plan is to be able to perform a set like this in front of ppl and have them enjoy it, dance, and maybe share in the magic. The actual performance is in the ./Studio section of my Lx7.ca website.

Locked away in the studio for a couple of days learning to use the MPC and attempting to make it talk to the rest of the gear I came up with this dark deep liveset. It's a blend of old samples I'd collected over the years with patterns crafted on the 909 and improvised into a series of looping midi sequences. If you've seen the video, you know how I do it,... this liveset is the result.

Staying true to the tradition, I welcome Toronto artist Adam Marshall to the show for a 60 min. podcast on all things techno. We cover all the bases: his techno history, early pieces of hardware, software vs. vinyl, and some of those great stories about what brought him to where he's at today. After a 4 week break from producing tunes the studio I take 2 minutes to review, collect and move forward. Also got new tracks to share, one has lyrics?!? the other has arpeggiated lead lines. Each track has it's story, but it's the rational and the theory that makes them interesting. Should a track have more then 5 elements playing at any one time? We're 2 episodes from the 1 year Lx7 anniversary show, which is both exciting and scary! This week, Greg from the Weakest Beat challenged me to come up with an entry for the second season of his podshow. The resulting track is a departure from our normal prescription of techno but the challenge makes it worth it. In a similar vein I also demo an unfinished track called the Sirens, plus an FYI on an upcoming contest I had in mind regarding cellphones.

Whenever the weather gets cold like it does here, I get a weirded out. I share the topic and idea of my first iMix called Cold Winter Rain. This episode is a certified ALL ELECTRO episode. 2 tracks with that electro sting. Lots of talk about this time of year and the strange energies of looking at the Toronto music scene from a pair of new eyes. Is this podcast based on the Seasonal Affected Disorder? If this episode had a musical theme, the musical theme would be 80's Synthpop. Each song of (these are definitely not tracks) have that overdub electronic feel that a lot of my favorite early electronic songs have. And with a musical influence inspired by the holidays; they aren't Christmas carols, but the stories behind the tunes sets the mood well. I also throw in a healthy dose of production technique on how each song was composed. Well worth the late nite sessions.....

It's a new year and season 2 of the podcast, lets start the year right with a session version of my New Years PA. It's a 10 song set of music I've been working on over the past couple of months. Were you wondering why I didn't have a podcast up on the friday as normal? *THIS IS WHY!!!* It's 50+ minutes of me doing what I love to do across techno, electro, and even some break beat. Gear used: MPC4000 and Nord Modular G2. For mixing and all the EQ'ing I use the Stanton SA-5 mixer. So checkout the rhythms and the bassdrops... this set is about as live and impromptu as it gets.

Every band has its members, and my studio band is no different. In this episode I breakdown the basic format on how I build a track. Starting with an idea, and filling out the elements to turn it into a filled out loop. If it were a math formula it would look somthing like this: Synth line idea + bassline + drums + bassline2 + filler sound = loop Does that sound crazy? It makes sense... it really does.

Before there were standards and expectations on what a drum machine should be, and shouldn't be... there was the tr-909. Wonder why I'm such a fan. Simplicity, a raw and simple interface... lots of options... and some of the phattest kick drum sounds ever. There was a time when you couldn't make dance music without one. Today we have JoMox, Machinedrum, and Drumazon, but all those would never have come to pass without the magic that is the tr-909.

For one week I thought it would be interesting to fall instep with the vlogger challenge and post a video blog every day. Video Blogging Week, actually runs from April 1st-7th (according to mefeedia.com) and the concept is simple: 7 days, 7 videos... with a focus on having fun, and raising the awareness of the power in online video. This week being a podcast week for me anyways, I thought it would be a welcome change. In true essence of this weeks vLogging I used the cell phone to record a podcast from inside a Mini Cooper at the Toronto launch party... It was too loud to record it on the floor so of course getting in a car closed windows and all made sense. Remember as a kid being afraid to go to the front of the class and write on the blackboard... imagine tying up a car AT ITS LAUNCH PARTY to record a 3 minute segment. I was both embarrassed by and excited by it... adrenaline on high (from the situation) I hit record and babbled this vLog. Was it silly? was it sensible? I have no idea... but it's vLog week so it's all about doing it no matter what. Trust me... my normal week isn't this exciting... but this week.. I've been having quite the adventure, and capturing it! So if I seem nervous on camera and a all flighty, it's because normally I'm alone, in a studio, surrounded by my gear and feeling safe.... these public vLogs are a challenge and have definitely put me outside of my comfort zone. BUT have been tons of fun so far.

vlog week continues and although i do have the good video camera, using the camera phone is just simple. Please pardon the video quality. But.... the coolest part about the ppl in this podcast, I met most of them at a Podcamp, or other podcamp like events. Pretty wild considering we all were at the PodcampNYC opening event and then decided to break out for a midnite snack. Maybe those 2 greyhounds weren't such a good idea... mileage may vary on this one.

If you've ever spent time buying techno at Record Time in Detroit you've had the luck of talking to him about music, events happening in Detroit, and the overall the techno experience. I watched the Air Guitar challenge, and the Dramatic Monologue's. Some people are fans of programming their music to the nth degree, but sometimes working that way can bog down the creative process. I like to get in there and let things roll as they do and capture the happy accidents. This episode highlights that technical process and how I've been recording my songs. Look out spring, here comes the techno! It's that time of year when 2 of North America's biggest techno festivals happen. DEMF over in Detroit, and Mutek in Montreal. 2 weekends in a row of electronic music... Techno and more! You can already guess who's getting outta Toronto for a couple of road trips. Wondered what DEMF was like... for me it was a chance to hang out with friends and shoot some video. Having spent most of the event at the various kiosks I took the opportunity to get a quick interview with Aaron Carl. Having just heard his new EP and in the excitement of the event it was a pleasure to catch up. It's all hand held camera action... so my apologies for the motion sickness.

When I first started visiting detroit I had a chance meeting with DJ Dijital outside of Record Time. He had no idea who I was,... but for years after the chance conversation haunted me. I bought an ASR-X off of another UR artist who releases by the name Perception, and the three of us talked briefly about making music on the machine. Running into him at DEMF was the perfect opportunity to finally ask him some of the questions I always wanted to know... so with fading sunlight I asked him my 3 favorite questions: What tracks inspired him? What gets him into the studio? And what is his favorite piece of gear? The interview was quick; I was manic from handing out zines. But I tried to capture abit of the quiet artist who is known as Dj Di'jital.

My attempts to spend some time with Anthony Shakir on camera seemed fraught with problems... every time I planned on interviewing him, he would disappear. Having been a fan of his music since his release Club Scam II on Frictional Recordings, I've always wanted to meet him. Add to the mix, stories about his production skills and off beat personality, I wanted to say hi.. and introduce myself. While we had been writing through a chance meeting on the 313 mailing list, it was in our conversation that I thought to bring a camera and interview artists. After Claude Young's set... I finally got 5 minutes. As you can see... the resulting footage is nothing but chaos.... We talk for abit... My plan was to discuss song inspiration, talk about his dj set.... but as chance would have it... along came Claude Young and flipped the script. I can only say it's with admiration and honest shock the results of it all. Candid camera moments like this really help me realize that we're a huge scene of people out here. All of us making and sharing our craft and love... and sometimes we get a glimpse of the reflection of what good can come from it. Thank you everyone for listening, watching, participating and sharing. And most of all thank you Aaron Carl, Lamont Norwood (dj Di'jital), Anthony Shakir and Claude Young for being on the show and sharing some time on camera at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival this year.

I've known Sean (The Butcher of Detroit) for ages from his visits up to Toronto to buy records and hang out for Carabana. So while I was in Detroit for DEMF, Sean had me over to check out his basement studio and run through some of his favorite the records and mixes before the Detroit Techno Militia record release party. It's quite a collection and he has a number of vinyl gems that I was drooling over; but out of nowhere he pulls out a NIN 12'inch. I'm a fan of Trent Reznor and the music he makes and I've even remixed The Hand that Feeds. So when Sean pulled out his vinyl copy and started to give me a quick show of a remix he would do I had to pause and grab the camera to capture it and share here on the show. But if you want to know what that other track is... message Sean on mySpace and ask him.

I've been a fan of Theo Parrish since I first heard First Floor. I'd been traveling to Detroit buying pretty much anything that I found at Record Time that sparked my interest, and that album was just so deep. Both Heal Yourself And Move, and Sky Walking haunted me forever after I'd heard them. So when he was here in Toronto I picked it as a prime opportunity to grab the camera and share his thoughts. If you haven't read my review of the event at Crosstown; it was stellar. I had thought of recording the event itself, but figured it would be better to just get Theo sharing his thoughts. It was 5 or 6am when they shut down the party... It was a hot nite, the club was locked with great performances all around... So under the red light of the dj booth we spent a couple of minutes talking about all things and all the reasons people should get into this.

On the edge of the Toronto docklands is a small park called Cherry Beach, or M5A 1A1 if you go by the postal code. And for the past couple of years Promise has been busy holding free electronic day events. A summer ritual that started back in 2000. The event started out as a rengade event, and has had it's share of hurdles to overcome. I've spent a couple of sunny sunday afternoons and evenings hanging out at Cherry Beach for these Promise events. The guys who run it (Dave Macleod and Irving Shaw) organize these events, bring the gear, suggest the lineup, and then open it up for anyone to share and participate in. The opportunity for anything to happen can/has happen. It's not quite Burning Man, but still an interesting scene to watch or participate in. I thought I'd go down and shoot some video and capture some of the vibe of what it's about. If you're here one summer sunday and have time,.. you should head down and check it out.

At Beats Breaks and Culture, Play De Record sponsored a gallery installation that tracked some of the hardware used to make electronic music. What all started with Leon Theremin has evolved into an ever increasing array of synths and software that is technology music. This installation is interesting but brief. I like it because it shows some of the major innovations in user interface from the SP1200 through to the tr-909. Check out some of the gear that makes our music possible.

This episode is a goodbye to my current studio, but the Lx7 podcast is not over. It's been a summer of planning, for season 3 of the show. After 2 years of working in the basement, it's time I got organized and had something more. Life has been a series of interesting but forever distracting events but it's definitely growing and changing in the right direction. In this episode it's all goodbyes to the studio, to the house, to life as it is; and hello to tomorrow, a new studio, more artist interviews, production tech, and more of what the Lx7 Podcast is all about.

My life is in boxes, physical boxes in various storage lockers around the city. Here is an update on the new studio space and a brief tour of the layout. It might not look perfect, but definitely a step up from my previous basement. Just a quick tour of the studio space and what I've got planned for Season 3 of the show. The new season starts Dec. 27th, Boxing day... as in small boxes called drum machines cranking out the tunes in the new space.

The renovations are taking alot longer then expected, but here are some of the results of some of the renos that have kept me out of the studio. While this might *NOT* be the studio? it?s a huge milestone in the project plan. Think of this less of a music podcast, and more as a vLog update.
