Progressive Banjo for the Postmodern World-- "LaGoy's Latest" is an iTunes-friendly feed of the latest material from Matt LaGoy et al. Matt pushes the boundaries of what one can and cannot (or should and should not) do with a banjo. Alas, some songs have no banjo at all. Stand-up and electric basses, digital sequencers, organs, and various household items fill in the gaps of these often-odd-timed gems.

LaGoy's Latest Episodes -

High and Dry
This is a pretty straight reading of the song from Radiohead's the Bends. I put brand new strings on the acoustic guitar for this one. I didn't put any banjo in this.

February in July
This song started out as an electronic composition. I gradually replaced various parts with actual recorded parts. The drums remain sequenced (except for the hi hat intro and a snare fill) samples from the Mapex kit. The bass and guitar parts were recorded directly through the Digitech RP-1. The song is in seven and the clave part breaks it into 9-8 plus 5-8, with the 9-8 overlapping the one. I did most of the composition in February, revived it in July and finished it in September.

Such Great Heights (version 3)
Here's yet another version of this song. This is sort of like a Neil Young meets Built to Spill by way of Modest Mouse and maybe Flaming Lips ...version. Howl and twang.

Such Great Heights
I think I've only heard the original a handful of times. Different versions of this swim around in my head from time to time. This one is a mid-'90s pop-punk version. Sloppy and raw!

Fire in the Rain
I like to set fires in my backyard. I was doing this a few days ago and it started raining on me. As I walked inside, this song was playing in my head so I went upstairs and recorded it. Pulse problems are abound, as usual. When drumming, I used a brush in my left hand and a stick in my right.

Lions On Patrol
I had this lazy, sloppy tune in my head. I ran upstairs and blasted it out in the studio in about a half hour. This is pretty close to what was playing in my head.

Baba Yetu
This is a cover of the opening theme in Sid Meier's Civilization IV. It is (roughly) The Lord's Prayer in Swahili. I used no electric instruments in this recording.

Man Makes Dice
This song was playing in my head for a couple weeks before I recorded it. It is now your burden. I don't know what the genre of this is-- modern synth banjo prog? cyberslag? No idea. It seems maybe post-apocalyptic, but like after the terrible terrible robots enslave us all, a human discovers a form of math that drives him to madness in a dystopian robocracy. This is his song.

Rock Angelz
The first Electronaprov recording in the new studio. This is a live recording. Moss on keyboards, Mitch on bass, Matt on mixer and background percussion.

God in a Box
I got this tune in my head a few months ago and blasted all of these single-take tracks together. The drums were recorded with three mics, the bass and guitar were from a mic on an amp, and the banjo was recorded with a single mic and hit with distortion later. The lyrics made no damn sense so I skipped over about half of them.

Coffee
First thing I played within a few minutes of trying new standard tuning (NST). The drums are 1 to 16 bar snips I took from practice recordings. The bass is the 6 string fretless.
