The goal of these workshops was to engage young people in our community, champion youth-led and youth-focused programming, and offer increased training opportunities. Workshop participants learned how to create a podcast, from song selection, to securing music rights, to recording, editing and hosting the final podcast. For the Fall 2008 workshop, the students broke into three groups to create three unique podcasts. KEXP will present these podcasts in consecutive months. Here is the third in the series, created and hosted by Peter, Spencer and Bobby. Peter Lowe is the sole proprietor of Highfives and Handshakes, an independent music and art label and distributor. He has been booking, promoting, and running DIY shows since 2004. Peter has spent time interning with Sub Pop, KEXP, and One Reel/Bumbershoot, and is an active member of the programming committee at the Vera Project. Bobby Farrington is the Founder of Oh Girl Productions, an independent production company focusing on original film, art, photography, design and event creation. He currently hosts Le Boom Box on KSUBSEATTLE.ORG, is the Founder and Editor of Dreamboat On-Line Zine, writes and produces original content for Friends Of Julius Film/Comedy Group, and has worked with international Arts & Culture organizations such as Vice Magazine, the Seattle International Film Festival, and Pravda Studios. Here is the second in the series, created and hosted by Trevor, Sean, and Rory. Trevor Walker: Trevor Walker, 19, is a DJ from Redmond who loves listening to KEXP. After an internship at the Old Redmond Firehouse Teen Center for over a year, Trevor is ready to gain more experience as a DJ. He likes to DJ at parties, ad would love to someday DJ at one of Seattle?s infamous raves. He gets inspiration from his favorite DJ (Diplo) who he recently saw at Neumos on Halloween. Trevor practices his craft for hours everyday, playing a mix of electronic, dance, and indie rock music. Rock on, Trevor! Sean Dwyer: Sean Dwyer is 16 years old. He likes ska music and frequently attends ska shows. He had found out about Vera and KEXP through growing up in Seattle and trying to be as actively involved in the music scene as possible. He is quite familiar with their mission and values and understands their dedication to musically educating and entertaining the youth. He signed up for the podcasting workshops to learn how to create and distribute podcasts that would expose underground bands from around the Seattle area. Rory Raabe: Rory Raabe, 18, has been interning at KEXP for the past year and currently interns in the programming department under the guidance of Mel Trejo. She is a sophomore at the University of Washington and is currently writing an analytical essay on musicians and radio interviews, on why we ask the questions we ask. Here is the first one, created and hosted by Reese, Bryn and Jessica. Reese Umbaugh: My name is Reese Umbaugh and I?ve always had a passion for music. I'm currently interning at KEXP, the best radio station in the world, and writing local album reviews for the University of Washington's Radio Station: RainyDawg Radio. You can also find me booking and promoting shows for local bands, playing DJ at local venues, and searching for change in my couch for jukebox selections. There are so many sounds coming out of Seattle right now. While all my selections are from bands and artists in the Northwest, they are all incredibly diverse. I wanted to show that there really is something for everyone in our local music scene. Bryn Kepler: Hello, my name is Bryn Kepler. For two days in late August of 2007, more than a dozen northwest bands from Seattle's legendary "grunge" heyday reunited and played to enthusiastic, and eventually very tired, old fans. Lifetime local music fan and current host of KEXP's NW music show Audioasis, Abe Beeson took this as inspiration to spin 10 classic cuts from bands of this era that aren't Mudhoney, Nirvana, Soundgarden or Queensryche for a podcast that'll have you pulling out the flannel and digging in to your own stack of 7" vinyl treasures.
