Hellthy: Indie Rock/Pop Audio Music Podcast Episodes - | Hellthy Introduces Guest DJ Series | MP3 5 She Artist The Accorns Website Album Dropping From The Trees Buy NowLabel Candlewax Records WebsiteGenre Hip Hop Music PodcastMixing it up: I'm introducing the Hellthy Guest DJ series. If you are a podcaster who loves great music, and want to get your name, your podcast and the music you love in front of Hellthy drop me an email at nat@hellthy.com to become a Hellthy Guest DJ. Hellthy listeners don't want no junk. Email me - I'd love to hear from you.So first up is Nashville Hip Hop producer Johhny Brickhouse who runs The Nashville Music Podcast. It's a mostly Hip Hop and Rock show with the occasional funked-out grab-bag sound collage and skit. It's a really good show. ... and hell yeah. I'm listening to episode 23 as I write this. Starts off with a crackling, potty-mouth voicemail message and resolves to - ahh - Bill Wither's classic Lovely Day. Great song.So for his Hellthy Guest DJ spot he's playing DC-based underground Hip Hop act on Candlewax Records: The Acorns. The song is 5 She from their album Dropping From The Trees. Mad Squirrel has a super-laid back and honest delivery with a slight, endearing lisp. This is underground Hip Hop of the collegiate, backpack variety rather than the gold-plated "convinging-you-I'm-more-dangerous-than-I-probably-am" variety. I like both types myself. And I dig this. So thanks JB for introduing them to me and to Hellthy. So visit his site: www.JohnnyBrickhouse.com and if you like what you hear subscribe to his podcast. And if you want to be a Hellthy Guest DJ drop me an email. And this ain't rocket science. You can do this too. As long as you are passionate about something: music, food, fighting... something. If you want to make your own Hellthy Enterainment check out my Big Contact www.BigContact.com. Post your audio or video anywhere on the 'net you want and Big Contact will do the rest.Cheers. | Get at Short URL | Download Hellthy Introduces Guest DJ Series | Play in Popup.

| The Occasion - All Over Idaho | MP3: All Over IdahoArtist: The Occasion WebsiteAlbum: Cannery Hours Buy NowLabel: Say Hey Records WebsiteGenre: Psych Pop RockMy friends in the Occasion are one of the best and more unqiue NYC bands. The first album is a little more 60's moody, mod, psych. The latest album Cannery Hours opens up even more and seems to leave the couch-slouching for a 70's van chooglin' down open desert roads. Ha. Sorry I'm a visual guy. That's how I describe music. Thankfully you can just hit play above (if you are on my site) and listen right away and judge for yourself...So if you are in the NYC area December 6th you must come out to the Tonic to see them perform - and hang out before with free food etc to celebrate The Deli Mag's 1st Birthday. It's also cosponsored by my project Big Contact Events. If you are a podcaster or mp3 blogger you can add this and other of their tunes as well as other performing bands' mp3s to your show. You can also interview the bands at the show etc etc... All info is at the Big Contact Events link above. | Get at Short URL | Download The Occasion - All Over Idaho | Play in Popup.

| Mike Wexler - Sound The Mirror | MP3: Sound The MirrorArtist: Mike Wexler WebsiteAlbum: Indie Folk-ish Label: Mike Wexler WebsiteGenre: I and Ear RecordsThis melody reminds me of a melody from an 80's tune that I can't quite place. This is cool stuff - and gets better with each listen.Mike Wexler is playing the first Big Contact Event co-sponsored with The Deli Magazine at Tonic in New York City on December 6th 2005. All info is here. Would be rockin' to see you there. | Get at Short URL | Download Mike Wexler - Sound The Mirror | Play in Popup.

| Qatsi - An Empire | MP3: An EmpireArtist: Qatsi WebsiteAlbum: We Love the Urge Buy NowLabel: Hey Frankie Recordings WebsiteGenre: Indie RockUnderstated Brooklyn music that sounds like 90's indie - but every once in a while the vocals push out just the slightest whisper of van-driving, mustachioed, tight pants, 70's rocker 'tude. | NYC Subway, Songs from the Underground | MP3: FlowsArtist: Spokinn Movement WebsiteAlbum: NYC Subway - Songs from the Underground Label: Headset Productions WebsiteGenre: VariousA good friend and old drummer bandmate from my Charleston, SC days just came through town on his way to some shows in Europe and we had a few drinks with another Charlestonian drummer Taylor Davis. Taylor runs a NYC label called Headset Productions and they have a new release they are getting some attention with that highlights subway busking musicians: Songs From The Underground. The recordings were recorded with as little overdubs as to capture a more true-to-subway feel - though "mixed and masterd by Grammy Award winning engineers."I remember hearing another subway project like this about 5 years ago or so - but this collection seems to focus on a more refined set. Don't expect to find grimy, raw, nasty, punked-out, sweaty music here. You can find that music in comfortable clubs. The NYC-busking sanctioning board doesn't want you feeling those feelings when you ride their grimy subway. This is refined, very well-made music for the most part. (Imagine lugging a vibraphone down into the subway! How does Sean McCaul do that? Those things weigh as much as a small refridgerator!)And this chill-music focus makes sense too. Sanctioned subway music is often escape music helping subway commuters forget they are in a grimy, raw, nasty, stinky, close, window-less, potential terrorist target of a shit-hole. The music often transfers the listener away from foul-mouthed, angry drunks shaving feet bunions with razor blades and the police's necessary bag searches and, instead, flies them to Conga Island or Pan-flute Mountain -- which definitely ain't a bad thing. | Group Sounds - Business Before Pleasure | MP3: Business Before PleasureArtist: Group Sounds WebsiteAlbum: self titled EP Genre: New Wave Freaker RockWith arty grandparents like Sonic Youth and Slint, it makes sense that indie pop and rock don't have the purest of genes for foot-moving, ass-bumping music. There are, however, a few indie bands who devote themselves to converting wallflowers to freakers. Add Brooklyn's Group Sounds to this noble effort to get the Spazz out. I first heard them on The Deli Magazine. | Get at Short URL | Download Group Sounds - Business Before Pleasure | Play in Popup.

| The Diggs - Trouble Everyday | MP3: trouble everydayArtist: The Diggs WebsiteAlbum: Orange EP Buy NowLabel: sugarspun records WebsiteGenre: indieThe Diggs posted this on the Big Contact Open Channel: "Brooklyn's The Diggs are a three piece formed in autumn of 2003. Their sound coalesces guitar driven mid-nineties Indie rock with traces of English dream pop. Their debut EP Orange is available now on Sugarspun Records." I'd agree that their faster tracks like Stagg has that 90's-ish angularity. Their quiter 'English dream pop' songs, like this and 'Just Like You Say' seem to have too much melody and luxury for anti-melody 90's comparisons. Very new millenium. | Junko Yanagida - Flowers | MP3: FlowersArtist: Junko Yanagida WebsiteLondon's Concrete and Clay brings us some creeped-out Japanese surrealism blending Japanese (and Japanglish) spoken word with classical samples (I'd say Dvorak but I'm a Classical jack-ass) over a simple hip-hop beat. Junko's Japanese text is darker than her English - and if it was in English it would probably sound unbearably overwrought: "If I can forget everything, I want to forget everything. If this is my decision I cant blame it on anyone else. Everything I can see is messed-up and makes me puke. I want to throw it all away but I can't runaway from it. I need help but no one will help. Damnit! I want to do something. Kill. Damn!" The Japanese are so dramatic with their entertainment. Then Junko switches to English and the flower talk. This is a very creepy, cool track that, if done by a native English-speaker, would probably sound like garbage art-school schlock. Wait for that chorus to hit. Call me a sucker for 1) anything Japanese, 2) classical music and 3) hip-hop (ha) but this short track is currently one of the favorites I've posted here. | m.a.m.e.d - me and my electronic drum | MP3: me and my electronic drumArtist: m.a.m.e.d WebsiteAnother from London's lo-fi and hip-hop genre-mashing Concrete and Clay label. I've been a fan of these blokes since they first added a handful of artist tracks on the Big Contact Open Channel a couple months ago. "Me and my electronic drum" sounds like a simple, bedroom recording with sleepy beats. As with the music itself, m.a.m.e.d keeps the description of this track simple: "A man and his Drumulator." | Bloc Party - Banquet | MP3: BanquetArtist: Bloc Party WebsiteAlbum: Silent Alarm Buy NowLabel: Vice Records (among others) WebsiteI came across some Bloc Party songs a few months ago among some amount of buzz and wasn't moved by the tracks I heard - so I didn't post anything. And I just now came across this track on Vice Records site - and it's pretty good. But who knows, for all I know, it could be the same damn track and I'm just a shallow son of a sailor who bows to constant peer pressure... Ha. I sure hope not. | Get at Short URL | Download Bloc Party - Banquet | Play in Popup.

| Stillman - The Worst Is Over | MP3: The Worst Is OverArtist: Stillman WebsiteAlbum: The Weightless EP Buy NowGenre: IndieYet another Big Contact Open Channel find: Stillman says: Described by Glasswerk.co.uk as - 'A beautiful ep indeed, the best I can describe it would be if Coldplay married the Doves and adopted Thom Yorke and Grant Nicholas. It's sublime and truly beautiful, its rare to find songs that make you feel happy and sad at the same time.' | The Black Squirrels - Barn Owl | MP3: Barn OwlArtist: The Black Squirrels WebsiteLabel: Concrete and Clay WebsiteLondon's Concrete and Clay have a handful of really good, mostly instrumental, cut-and-paste and hip-hop meets indie-pop artists. And most seem to share a slightly sloppy, fuck-it-all, drunken, anti-commercial attitude. That's the sense I get anyway. I dig it much. Nice genre-juggling. My hat goes off to the artists there... Content from Big Contact Open Channel. The description for this artist and their mp3 says: "Hip-hop meets snooze-core." | Get at Short URL | Download The Black Squirrels - Barn Owl | Play in Popup.

| The Perishers - Sway | MP3: SwayArtist: The Perishers WebsiteAlbum: Let There Be Morning Buy NowLabel: Nettwerk WebsiteOne of the nice things about this Hellthy format is that the music is here for you to hear for yourself. Why do text reviews exist? Because magazines and some zines don't let you hear for yourself - so they have to put into words the sounds of music. Why bother when you can hear it now and know now. I say this because I don't plan on writing anything worth a damn for this entry.Oh yeah, another use of text is to put the music in context. But, come on, how useful is that?.. Ok, this is a Swedish band with an inoffensive, agreeable pop sound. (Why do the Swedes often seem to offer just enough subtlety to make standard, straight-forward tunes sound a little more interesting? If you put the same song in 99.8% of anyone else's hands to perform it will probably sound like any forgettable barroom garbage. Is it just because they are foreign? Or is it something in the make-up of their northernly environment allowing their antenna to pick up quieter tones?) Ok, I've said more than I intended. | Get at Short URL | Download The Perishers - Sway | Play in Popup.

| Okkervil River - For Real | MP3: For RealArtist: Okkervil River WebsiteAlbum: Black Sheep Boy Buy NowLabel: Jagjaguwar WebsiteAnother example supporting my theory that indie music makers are getting antsy in their pantsy for a little more bombast, a little more shake, a little more rock n' roll. The door is slamming closed on the Will Oldham era of indie music it seems. Austin's talkie Okkervil River shifts gears slightly to give us this 80's pop-rock tinged number. | Get at Short URL | Download Okkervil River - For Real | Play in Popup.

| Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Bang | MP3: BangArtist: Yeah Yeah Yeahs WebsiteAlbum: Self-Titled EP Buy NowThis is an older song I played to death when my mp3 player had 4 songs on it. It's probably because I heard it so much those couple of years ago that listening to it now the song seems so dated - seems so NYC 2002. Ha. That and it was part of that innocent time before Garage music was played incessantly on VH1 and MTV. The Deli Magazine reports that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are in the studio now recording their latest. Here it is for your enjoyment. | Get at Short URL | Download Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Bang | Play in Popup.

I've heard TAAS before - and yes, seen all the ads and articles etc - and I can't recall if I've posted them before or no - I don't think I did. The other tracks didn't hit me like this one. | Diamond Nights - Destination Diamonds | MP3: Destination DiamondsArtist: Diamond Nights WebsiteLabel: Kemado WebsiteGenre: Glam RockI first heard this on the The Deli Magazine. We are seeing the next trend in indie-ville: rock n' roll with testicles. The Green-Party weepy music era is soon to draw to a close I predict. Yes, the punk-tinged garage sounds came and went - but that just points to the fact that the kids are restless - they want Rock but they haven't tasted IT yet. They haven't found IT yet. They want IT!Right now there's a kind of Bring-Back-Dokken kind of trend. And, as most things in Indie-ville, its tongue-in-cheek with a big dollup of style and pretense wrapped around stolen nostalgic hooks: "Ha-Ha. Look at us being silly and 80's glam." Comedy music Tenacious D whetted our whistles and then came The Darkness, Japan's DMBQ I posted a couple days ago, Black Mountain... All lifting late 70's and 80's riffs, squealing the vocals and not taking themselves too seriously because they really don't trust The Rock.I predict, that some day, the sky will part and down from the mountain a band will come and rock the balls off every boy and girl in the land... and they will be happy... IT is what The People are waiting for. | Get at Short URL | Download Diamond Nights - Destination Diamonds | Play in Popup.

| Timonium - Crushed Discs | MP3: Crushed DiscsArtist: Timonium WebsiteAlbum: Resist Education Buy NowLabel: Pehr WebsiteI've played some Timonium back in the early days of Hellthy. Think it's time to show off more. Some members from this band also run the label Pehr out of L.A. which is known for great downtempo indie sounds. They are also the blokes distributing my outfit Argentine's first record. This track is actually from a previous album Resist Education. They have a new album out Until He Finds Us - but I'm a sucker for the slimey 70's keyboard sounds of this tune. | Get at Short URL | Download Timonium - Crushed Discs | Play in Popup.

| Enon - Kanon | MP3: KanonArtist: Enon WebsiteAlbum: Lost Marbles And Exploded Evidence Buy NowLabel: Touch And Go WebsiteI was happy to find Enon's first album a handful of years ago. The instrumentation seemed inventive to me. The way they mixed hook-filled rock n' roll with the cut and paste Pro Tools funky weirdness without losing any motion was nice to hear. But John Schmersal's lyrical content was not engaging. He did not want to risk saying anything. Over the course of a few albums I think more of the vocal duties were handed over to Toko Yasudo where lyrical content still doesn't connect - but at least it's wrapped up in the excuse of a Japanese's inflections - which is a little more fun. | Get at Short URL | Download Enon - Kanon | Play in Popup.
