next

Dear Editor is hosted by Victoria (Vicki) and Michelle (Mica), two sisters who share a voracious appetite for reading and knowledge. Vicki and Mica strive to connect fiction and nonfiction, reading and writing, in a blur of relevance to our lives today. What makes a book stick in your memory? Can what you read shape how you view the world? How does a writer achieve that moment of brilliance, that tug on your emotion or your intellect that makes for an unforgettable experience? Delve into a podcast of literary analysis and unabashed philosophical wanderings with two avid Christian readers.

SFR #16: Crime and Punishment
Crime and Punishment, Dostoyevsky Review by Mica First let me get out my one major complaint about this novel, which I’m sure that many readers would have.  Fyodor Dostoyevsky is wordy.  He defines wordy.  Paragraphs span entire pages.  Characters monologue both to themselves and out loud.  As much as I love Dostoyevsky, there were parts that I [...]

#28: High Fantasy - With Jonathan
Dear Editor: The next time I see one of your novels in the fantasy section, it better not have any “constructs” walking around in it.  It better be all swords, and maybe some sorcery, and oh! Some vampires might be a nice touch, and… The definition(s) of high fantasy - they suck! Mentioned: LOTR, Harry Potter, Narnia, [...]

SFR #15: Dead Until Dark
Dead Until Dark is the first book in Charlaine Harris’s series The Southern Vampire Mysteries - adapted into the True Blood TV series. Review by Michelle I found this to be a real page-turner!  It was nothing like the TV series, which I hated.  There were many things that would offend people reading this book, but I’ll [...]

SFR #12: The Star Fox, Poul Anderson
The Star Fox by Poul Anderson Review by Michelle The Star Fox follows Heim and his ship through a politically turbulent time for future Earth.  An alien race, the Alerionia, have taken over a far off human outpost.  While Earth debates endlessly over the situation, Heim takes action and a delightful Space Opera ensues. #25: The Series That Wouldn’t Die
Dear Editor: Your 15-book series “Undead Wizards of the Deep” is like a zombie: it keeps shambling on and on even after it’s dead, and it eats the brains of its readers. Content: There are many reasons that book, TV, and movie series go on and on and on. Large fan bases that clamour for more - e.g., [...]

SFR #11: Search the Sky, Pohl + Kornbluth
Search the Sky, by Frederik Pohl and C.M. Kornbluth Review by Michelle. It was interesting reading a book that proudly declared “Copyright 1985″ on the cover — the year I was born!  Originally published in 1954, though as a “substantially different version,” this book is surprisingly enjoyable and timeless. Search the Sky is about dying human colonies and [...]

#23: Cheating Time
Dear Editor: You know, for a “science” fiction editor, you sure let a lot of things slide by. I think by now every one knows that you can’t break the speed of light barrier, and thus time travel is impossible. Or was that warp drive? WHATEVER. It’s all impossible! IMPOSSIBLE, we say [...]
