Cheap Date - 26 April 2008 - Chef's Fest 2008 & Contest Winners!

First, you'll join us for the most recent episode of Discover Woodfield! as we visit the 15th Annual Original Chef's Fest at the Arlington International Racecourse. This is our Third Annual visit to the Fest, and once again our pals Liz and Bob accompany us along with Becka and Emma.   Lots of food and fun, as well as some sweet Barbershop singing from The Arlingtones. Lisa is feeling under the weather this week, so Joe is your cruise director for this episode. Or maybe he's more like Gopher, your yeoman purser.  :-)  At least there are no Kermodian rants this time around. Cheap Date - 27 October 2007 - I Make Lamb (Well, Not This Time)
Welcome to the latest episode of Cheap Date! This time out, we visit Periyali Greek Taverna in Des Plaines for a wonderful family meal. We also spend some time talking about Halloween and lots of other stuff, too. Here is the link to listener Chris' recap of his two weeks in Europe drinking LOTS of really good beer. And here is listener Thelma's Orange Syrup recipe: Orange syrup 1 can of frozen Orange juice (plastic can is microwaveable) 4 tablespoons Butter Sugar Water Corn Starch Put OJ and butter in saucepan over medium heat. Make sure to stir constantly. I don't have a specific amount of sugar because I just put some in, test it, a little more, test it, and so forth. I think the last time I did this I put 4 spoonfuls in. I also used Splenda the last time I did it, and it came out great. I put in about third of the OJ can filled with water to settle down the OJ taste, and add 1 spoon of cornstartch. Keep stirring it over the saucepan. This only takes a few minutes to take. If you don't use it up, put it in a sealed jar and place in the fridge then when you need to use some just heat in the microwave and serve. Other fun stuff mentioned: The Affy Tapple Factory Store, Oberweis Dairy, and the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce. We'd also like to invite you to a live podcast by some wonderful Chicago podcasters at the Globe Pub, 1934 W Irving Park Rd, in Chicago. The hosts of The Brit and Yankee, ChicagoScope, Chicago Bites, and GamaSutra will all be there! Details on the flyer here! Have something to tell us? Drop us a line at dish@cheapdateshow.com or leave us a voice mail at 206 203-3283. We really enjoy all your feedback! Cheap Date - 18 August 2007 - A Cake of 1000 Leaves
A word of caution: this week's Cheap Date is not at all cheap. We received a very generous wedding gift from a friend of ours, which led us to an incredible meal at Chicago's Les Nomades. We can't say enough wonderful things about this experience, so you'll have to listen to the show for all the details. We received a lot of feedback on our "dip" question in our last show, and we share the results this time around. We also announce our creation of Lisa and Joe's Five Major Food Group Pentagram. Send in your votes today! The show ran a bit long, so we saved some feedback and a guest review for the next time out. Keep those comments coming! We love hearing from you. You can email us at dish@cheapdateshow.com, leave a message at 206 203-3283, or follow us on Twitter as 4thtime and jtl! This episode's running time: 38:18

Cheap Date - 4 August 2007 - Smile When You Say That
We've got a lot of ground to cover, so let's get to it. Condiment or food?  You be the judge.  It's a new listener poll. Charlie's Ale House on Navy Pier in Chicago was the venue for our meetup with fellow podcaster Shelly and her husband, The Fabulous Frank.  Good food, good conversation, and a good place to go if you're visiting the Pier. We also discuss the "Micks at the Mike" event presented by Bottom Shelf Comedy at Murphy's Pub in Arlington Heights.  Great stuff, and truly cheap! There's listener feedback, and then it's time to go. This episode fueled by Potocki Vodka and Cruzan Black Strap. (Not mixed together, mind you.)  Please keep those comments coming!  You can send an email to dish@cheapdateshow.com or leave a voice mail at 206 203-3283.  We love hearing from you! A great time was had by all. After filling up on jambalaya and whatnot, we headed up to Six Flags for Fright Fest. Ever do a 20-story drop straight down? Tonight's Cheap Date takes us to El Molino in Carpentersville. Hot, spicy, and the home of Joe's hands-down favorite Mexican dish. Did someone say "ROAD TRIP??" This week, we're off to the city of Madison, Wisconsin to see what's going on up there. Before we gas up and get on I-90, though, we tell you about the Tim Tam Slams we tried with the biscuits/cookies from listener Rachael. The Slam was explained to us by listener John. We also tell you how you can try this at home. Thanks, guys! We start out at the Dane County Farmer's Market where we bought great cheese and some awesome maple butter. And yes, there's an on-air taste test, complete with sticky fingers. Then it's up the street to Ian's Pizza, where we had some wonderful and wacky pizza slices. How to you top that? Beer, of course. We made our way through a marijuana-rights demonstration to the Wisconsin Union, where we enjoyed lots of cold beer at Der Stiftskeller. But wait, there's more. What follows beer? Tequila, of course. Dinner is at Casa de Lara, and it's something to behold. And on the way home, it's that old interstate standby, Cracker Barrel. It was a whirlwind, Ladies and Gents, but worth every moment. Cheap Date - 30 September 2006 - A Couch in the Elevator
Our weekend in downtown Chicago turns out wonderfully in spite of the rain and post-wedding partygoers in the hallways in the middle of the night. We started out at the Drake Hotel and then moved on to the Museum of Science and Industry.  We followed that up with a trip to Navy Pier, and then it was back to the hotel to get ready for a not-at-all Cheap Date. Dinner tonight is at mk, where we were very impressed with the decor as well as the food.  Yeah, like very impressed. Breakfast the next morning was at the Tempo Cafe where Joe enjoyed a very nice omelet and was reminded of the late, lamented Cambridge House. Cheap Date - 9 September 2006 - Got Anything More Upbeat?
Grab your putter, fire up the clay oven, bring up Lynx, and please keep your arms and legs in the car at all times.  We cover a lot of ground on this episode of Cheap Date... We recap our Labor Day tournament at Putting Edge Mini Golf in Hoffman Estates. Glow-in-the-dark madness, we tell ya-- once they turned off the sad cowboy music. You'll also hear how Fall is Lisa's favorite season, then Joe launches into the lyrics of "Season Cycle" from XTC's Skylarking album. Lisa counters by quoting the socially significant, heartfelt, and soul-touching lyrics of Fergie's "London Bridge." Our Cheap Date this week is the Indian/Nepalese lunch buffet at Mt Everest in Evanston.  Let's sum it up by quoting Lisa: "Everything was my personal favorite." For dessert (yeah, like we needed more food), we stopped at Homer's in Wilmette for some amazing ice cream.  We also give you a little primer on mochi. If you're hungry after this half hour, blame us. Tonight's episode is fueled in part by Longbranch Bloody Mary Zinger and Ketel One. Thanks to the devilishly talented Ross for calling us to the table tonight! And finally: we got around to recording our promos! Join us as we discuss Second City's solution to the homeless problem by putting them on the tail of a sweet-ass fluffy white dragon.  Wow.  And that was just one part of their new revue, Truth, Justice, or the American Way. Then it's off to Wally's in Park Ridge for some really good fast food, where we had a great, unoffensive dinner before heading out to the Portage Theatre for the closing night of the Silent Film Society of Chicago's Summer Festival.  Our Guest Review this week-- complete with awesome theme song-- is of Wild Willy's Burgers and comes to us courtesy of the charming and delightful Steve and Maureen.  A bleu cheese burger and large fries for me, please... Tonight's episode is fueled by a 2003 Banrock Station Shiraz.  And be sure to tune in to The Big Show this week to hear our co-hosting skills in action! Welcome to all our new listeners and welcome back to our intrepid regulars!   Drop us a line at dish@cheapdateshow.com or leave a comment below.  We love hearing from you! Cheap Date - 26 August 2006 - You Can't Argue With Math
What lurks in your genetic code?  Joe thinks he's got yellow moons, pink hearts, orange stars, and green clovers.  And Lisa laments the fact that one of her grade school projects has been rendered obsolete. We talk about the National Geographic Society's Genographic Project, in which Joe and his sister are participating.  In a few weeks, we'll see what Joe's DNA sample tells us.   If you're interested in finding out about your ancient ancestors, join up! A lunchtime Cheap Date takes us to Sopraffina in Chicago, where we enjoyed some delicious Italian market-style dining.  We followed that up (okay, a couple hours later) with a visit to Cereality, a cereal bar right next to the Monroe Street Bridge in downtown Chicago. Sugarbuzzsugarbuzzsugarbuzz. Thanks to the lovely Karen for calling us to the table tonight! Tonight's episode is fueled by a Fusee Merlot 2003.  (Sorry, we can't put an accent egout in the name because the blogging software can't handle it.) This episode's running time:  29:40.

Cheap Date - 19 August 2006 - Urban Eat Whale
This episode comes off like a well-boiled icicle.  Well, maybe not quite as smoothly as that, but you get the idea. Join us as we talk about the proper way to make popcorn in a hot air popper (and the crib we always pass on I-65), and whether or not Lisa is on a first-name basis with the Fire Department.  Oh, and is Joe an Antichrist or Anarchist? As we enjoy our Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat Ale, you'll also hear our take on Clerks 2. Our Cheap Date this week is Finn McCool's in Schaumburg, Illinois.  We were delighted, from the cheap beer to the cheap burger to the fried delight that came at the end of our meal.   Listen to the show for full details. (Promised show link here.) We also learned about a longtime Chicago restaurant tradition (That Steak Joynt), that's returning, presumably without the ghosts. We bring you some followups on last week's show as listeners mention their favorite ice cream shops, including Springer's Ice Cream, Amy's Ice Creams, and an honorable mention to Ashby's Sterling Ice Cream. You'll put on the pounds just listening! Then it's off to Chicago's Greektown and the Greek Islands Restaurant. Yum. We follow that up with a visit to Scooter's Frozen Custard in Chicago. Tonight's show was fueled by a 2002 Flinders Bay Shiraz. Very nice and smooth. It's all good, friends. And decidedly high-cal, but hey-- it's summer! Today's edition of Cheap Date takes you to some our favorite ice cream spots in the Chicago area.  But first, a little fun from Steve and Dawn as they have a spot of trouble getting us to the table. You'll hear our reviews of Oberweis Dairy, The Plush Horse, Julie Ann's Frozen Custard, The Glenview Dairy Bar (shown at right), and Capannari's Ice Cream. Subtitled: "Who ate all the Smudlers Knechts Noen?" This week's show begins with a reminiscence of Graham Kerr's Galloping Gourmet show, and a really unhealthy dish that looked pretty good on TV, actually. We also talk about a strange little TV show called Nite-Owl and how Joe's foresight in the early 80s has made him a hero on YouTube here in the 21st Century. Then it's off to Portillo's in Rolling Meadows for an awesome Italian Beef and a Jumbo Hot Dog. Add some fries and you've got a classic and delicious meal. Our intent is to make you hungry, so you've been warned. We end this week's show with an invitation and a physics lesson. Plenty of beer on tap and plenty of food on the plates! And not very far from The Friendly Confines, so if you need to have your heart busted all over the place, like the Cubs did to Steve Goodman, we've got you covered. In the return of our Guest Review segment, Shelly takes us to The Fish Net Restaurant in Blue Hill, Maine. Our mouths started watering during the recording of this segment, so be warned. We finish up the show by reading some listener mail and comments, including talk about one of the best movies ever made, the big festival in Lisa's home town, and the fact that Lisa is way cuter than Lala. Welcome to our very first videocast! Yeah, it's an actual song, folks, and we felt it needed to be heard. We don't know why, but we did. :-) The scenes were shot around downtown Arlington Heights this past week, and include appearances by Joe's daughters and Derek Hanley from Peggy Kinnane's. Neither of us are in this, but if things work out, you may get video of us in future. Oh, you lucky people. Cheap Date - 22 April 2006 - Live from Chef's Fest
Subtitled: "How did we miss the Meat Sticks?" For Cheap Date's very first live remote, we visit the Arlington International Racecourse for Chef's Fest 2006.  And coming along for the ride are our good pals Liz and Bob. The idea behind Chef's Fest is to give local restaurants and hotels the opportunity to put on their best for the general public.  This year, there were about 100 exhibitors offering everything from plum wine to marshmallow fondue to, yes, meat sticks.  For a $30 admission fee, visitors got to sample as much food from as many places as they could squeeze in (sorry for the pun). Some of the places we mention are: Bonefish Weber Grill Real Time Sports Emmett's Texas de Brazil Durty Nellie's Ram Wildfire Mitsuwa Market Peggy Kinnane's Qdoba Rainforest Cafe Pappadeaux Costco Dave and Buster's IKEA Brookfield Zoo Bennigan's Harper College Tony and Tina's Wedding Jelly Belly Metropolis Ballroom Arlington Heights Sheraton Glunz Family Winery Lynfred Winery We talk to several passers-by who seem more amazed at four people sitting at a white resin table with microphones than with the food itself.  A baguette gets broken, a fire department commander shows how they talk down at the station, and Bob regales us with the tale of The Sandwich in One Bite Guy. Some quick technical notes about the show:   the room was very noisy, so we found ourselves speaking louder than usual, and as a result there's some distorted audio: we did our best to clean it up, though.  Also, our vocals are in mono because we mixed it down that way-- the original stereo recording is awesome because of the way the crowd sounds in the background, but our voices wound up in different channels so it sounded like the audio equivalent of a tennis match.  We may post a few minutes of the original mix so you can experience the effect. It'll be kinda like hearing Sgt. Pepper's for the first time. :-) Write to us!  We'd love to hear about your dining experiences, good or bad;  and we appreciate your comments!  You can reach us at dish@cheapdateshow.com or you can leave a comment right here on the blog.
