Hosted by CBC Chief Correspondent Peter Mansbridge, the program welcomes an eclectic blend of newsmakers and thinkers you rarely see in conversation, from the world of politics, arts, business, science and sports. Robert Fowler, Held Hostage by al Qaeda in Africa (Sept 12, 2009)
Kidnapped by al Qaeda. The very thought causes shudders. But it happened to this week's guest: one of Canada's former senior diplomats in Africa on a special mission for the United Nations. The challenge: solving a dispute between the government of Niger and the rebel movement MNJ. This week, the Untold Story inside 130 days of captivity. For two nights, CBC News: The National aired parts of the Robert Fowler story - gripping moments of his kidnapping, captivity and eventual release. But our interview included many more stories about the four and a half months that Fowler and his aide Louis Guay spent living with a band of 30 al Qaeda insurgents, always watched at gunpoint.
