Beneath The Beat

next

Beneath The Beat seeks to provide in-depth discussion exploring the authentic essence of hip hop culture. Hip Hop has a rich and diverse history, from music and dance to fashion and style. Its heart beats with a vital social consciousness and its voice speaks with articulate, powerful and creative expression. This is the very definition of art. Yet the art form of hip hop has been devalued by the juvenile and derogatory sameness favored by its commercial promoters, the media conglomerates. Beneath the Beat embraces the defiant spirit of hip hop's originators. By tapping technology, we offer a global independent voice, free from record label and big business imperatives.

Video_003: Underground Legends, Lyricst Lounge 2001
In June of 2001 there was a Big Daddy Kane show at BB Kings in New York City. Many Old School rappers attended and performed... Big Daddy Kane, Ice T, Masta Ace, Keith Murry. Then there was the emfamous battle between one of my personal favorite MC's and forever will be Masta Ace vs Boogieman. It was not a pretty sight but it was just a shining example of the sportsmanship of hip hop. At the end of the show there was a cipher gathering. Some of the up and coming now legendary battle lyricsts C-Rayz Walz, Poisen Pen, and Jin, were talking about the massacre of Masta Ace Vs Boogieman... check it out

Audio_012: R.I.P. Jay Dee - Part 1 - Keep On by DJ Dez, Elzhi, and MaGestiK LeGenD
This is the first part of a series of episodes dedicated to Jay Dee. On feb 10th 2006 james yancey -- best known as JD or J Dilla, age 32, died in Los Angeles, reportedly of Lupus, a degenerate disease of the immune system. The BBC news quotes his manager stating that he was diagnosed with the disease three years ago. I am deeply saddened over the loss of Jay Dee he was and continues to be someone who has tremendously affected my life - i feel that the mainstream news media is not qualified nor competent enough to relate his importance so i have provided my own interpretation for those of you who are not familiar with his legacy - today i want to use the track Keep On by DJ Dez, Elzhi, and MaGestiK LeGenD - it appears to be a tribute to Jay Dee but i can not confirm that but it seems most appropriate for this particular episode

Analysis_017: The Dungeon by Canibus
I bought this CD MicClub Master Mixtape Vol. yesterday. I actually started listening to the tracks today and was so moved by the monstrosity of Canibus as a lyricst that I had to do a special show on it. I have been following Canibus for years and his lyrical content is consistently the same, and dominant. The track is called the Dungeon, both Canibus and Kurrupt are the emcees performing the track. who ever the producer is on that track really brought it out Rip the Jacker on that joint. I will do more shows like this in the future it is not exactly a show its more like a lesson and a preachy moment. Hey its my show I do this for the love not for popularity :)

I just came back from NAB (the National Association for Broadcast) in Las Vegas Nevada and Central State University, in Wilberforce Ohio. I was covering the 5 day event in Vegas for my technology podcast and weeks before I was asked to speak at Central State which is my Alma Mater. Both were an honor to attend. Anyway after I spoke at Central for communications week I decided to go around campus armed with my camera. I started interviewing students and I was pleasantlly surprised with the results. During my travels I found this young man by the name of Rick Black, who happens to be a communications major and I asked him his thoughts on the industy. He is a poet and in a poetic moment he decided to freestyle his thoughts. I was impressed with him and I'd like to share his words with this clip.
