The Albany poetry community lost one of its own in October when long time poet and musician Pat Covert passed away. Poets Speak Loud at the Lark Tavern in October was a tribute to Pat featuring Deb Bump along with open mic poets and spoken word artists all sharing stories, memories, and poetry.

Albany Poets Presents at Valentines on Tuesday, October 3 was an amazing night of poetry, music, and spoken word from The Poet Essence and her special guests. The open mic before and after the feature performance saw James, Dain Brammage, Bessam Sam, Thom Francis (with Derek on guitar), and R.M. Engelahrdt.

It was raining outside, but the poets still came to Valentines on Tuesday, September 5 for the Albany Poets Presents open mic. The open mic for poetry and spoken word included familiar poets like Dan Wilcox, A.C. Everson, Thom Francis, and Julie Lomoe, and some new names like Anathuria, Nick Frail, Jamey Stevenson, Naomi Kriss, and Jason Berkowitz (who will be the featured poet at the Wired! open mic series in Schenectady in October).

Pierre Joris was the featured poet for the September 2006 edition of Poets Speak Loud at the Lark Tavern with music by special guest Mitch Elrod. Poets Speak Loud in August featured poet (and Lark Tavern manager) Alex Albino. Alex will also be performing at LARKfest 2006 on September 16 on the Hometown Stage. The open mic started out with a new poem from host Mary Panza followed by poetry and spoken word from Dan Wilcox, Rich Tomasulo, Tim Verhaegen, Josh McIntyre, Don Levy, James, Bob Sharkey, Bassam Sinan Sam, William, Kyle Z., and another poet performing at LARKfest, The Poet Essence. The evening ended with a special encore from Alex.

Rachel Zitomer was our featured poet at the July edition of Poets Speak Loud at the Lark Tavern. Rachel will also be performing her work at LARKfest on September 16, so this was a chance to get a taste of her work. We had a new poet out, Alan Kolb, who was well received. Dan Wilcox (with his traveling "poetry K-Mart"), A.C. Everson, Alan Catlin, James Schlett, Tim Verhaesh, Don Levy (calling out the US Poet Laureate), and Debora Bump ("not writing about you") also shared their work with the audience at our monthly poetry and spoken word open mic.

The post-Word Fest Poets Speak Loud was not just our monthly poetry and spoken word open mic at the Lark Tavern, but also day two of Paddy Kilrain benefit show. Paddy, a local singer/songwriter, was hit by a drunk driver in late March and Albany's poets and musicians all got together to help raise money for her medical expenses. Dain Brammage was the featured poet of the evening and as an added bonus the winner of the Lark Tavern Singer Songwriter Contest, Matt Durfee also performed. Matt recently won "Best Male Singer/Songwriter" in the annual "Best of the Capital Region" issue of the Metroland. Open mic poets Dan Wilcox, A.c. Everson, Alan Catlin, Bob Monaghan, James, Shara, Bob Sharkey, KC, K.J. Spencer, and Paddy Kilrain all shared their work with the crowd to bring an end to the 2006 Albany Word Fest and all for a good cause.

This week we have the final poets from the 2006 Albany Word Fest Open Mic Part II, William Seaton, Tae, Cheryl Rice, Shannon Shoemaker, P.R. Dyjack, and Noah Nattell sharing their work plus the spoken word / slam performance of the Intangibles from Psycho Cluster F*#k 06 at Valentines. The Intangibles are a group of poets and spoken word artists who all were a part of the Oneonta College slam team and have performed in slam competitions all over the country.

Part Two of the 2006 Albany Word Fest Open Mic took place at Valentines on Saturday, April 22. Hosted by Thom Francis, the open mic had a different feel than the night before. For day two, poets were able to read two poems and there was even a break during the performances. Poets A.C. Everson, P.R. Dyjack, Shara, Dug, Alan Catlin, and a few new poets to the area joined featured poets Carol Graser, Reggie Marra, William Seaton, and K.J. Spencer on stage to make for a great day for poetry and spoken word.
