I travel very often to several cities and countries. When I return to Hamburg, I mostly sit on board of a nighttrain or plane, sometimes in my car. So I have a lot of time to think about themes like my life, society, art, cultur und science. My thoughts about these things I'll tell you daily around midnight (MET).

Piazza San Marco is as overwhelming as it is exhilarating; overwhelming for its size and the hordes of tourists it holds, and exhilarating because as squares go this one is nearly perfect in its shape and architectural details. Grandiose buildings and monuments define its boundaries, on its western side stands St. Mark’s Basilica, a uniquely Venetian Byzantium-Gothic building that was completed in 1094. Next to the Basilica stands the luxurious Doge Palace constructed in 1419. At the end of the square towers the tallest structure in Venice the Bell Tower. Several museums also are found on the Piazza, including the Library of Sansoviniana, and the Correr Museum. The symmetry and beauty of St. Mark’s and its Bell Tower can leave even the most callused traveler dumbstruck. St. Mark’s Basilica has majestically dominated Venice’s Piazza San Marco for over 900 years. It is unique for the wealth of its history and for the magnificence of its facade and interior. It was designed by an unknown Byzantine architect, who supposedly modeled it after the Apostoleion in Constantinople, giving it an opulent style with mosque-like onion shaped domes that clearly reflect the influence of the Orient. Some 8,000 square meters of mediaeval mosaics, made from gold, semi precious stones and Venetian glass, covers the walls, and cupolas. Countless numbers of pilgrims and tourists alike have been awestruck by the golden magnificence of this, the largest and most lavishly decorated 11th century church.
