The area was originally settled by criminals and convicts, but modern "Sydneysiders", as they call themselves, are among the most friendly and hospitable citizens of any large city. Sydney has all of the sun, surf and fun-loving atmosphere of a tropical port-of-call, while still serving as a major commercial, financial and cultural center.
